GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE James Urbanovsky
CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Fr. Clint Ressler
“There’s a Pill for That”
I recently heard a statement that
went like this: “We are the most indebt, obese, addicted, and medicated adult cohort in U.S. history” (Brene Brown). The observation was meant to point out how common it is for us to numb or anesthetize our feelings. Furthermore, as a wealthy nation we are able to afford a great number and variety of distractions. By the time we are adults we have usually cultivated one or several ways of ‘easing the pain’ or discomforts of life. You could say that avoiding pain and discomfort is almost a national pastime. Now, I’m not suggesting that pain and discomfort are a good thing. Rather, I want to point out that the ups and downs of life are part of LIFE. Jesus said to his disciples, “If you would be my disciple, you must take up your cross daily and follow me” (Matt. 16:24). Merely, avoiding the ‘crosses’ in life is not the formula for experiencing ‘resurrection.’ Jesus invites us to have a heart and to let that heart experience the wide range of feelings. It’s called ‘being alive.’ Why not take an honest look at the habits in your life, the coping mechanisms and the unconscious ways you avoid ‘life.’
Council 2917 is blessed that within our midst we have two Brother Knights who are Seminarians at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. We are very excited that one, Jesse Garcia, is scheduled to be ordained a Transitional Deacon on May 18, 2013 in the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Brother Jesse became a Knight of Columbus on July 7, 2008 and on February 9, 2013, I had the privilege to accompany him to Winnie, Texas for exemplification into the Fourth Degree. Brother Jesse, your Brother Knights are extremely proud of your achievements, support and pray for you, and anxiously look forward to your ordination to the priesthood. I want to thank from the bottom of my heart the many council Brother Knights, lovely ladies of our Ladies Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of Court Christ the King #1750, Junior Catholic Daughters, and all other lovely ladies and gentle-men who worked their “hearts out” preparing our grounds and facilities, selling raffle tickets, parking cars, working booths and serving in many other capacities in hosting the Archdiocesan Chapter Knights of Columbus Family Fun Day Festival on Saturday, April 6, 2013. A “very special thanks” to the Ladies Auxiliary for donating the funds to build the beautiful altar used for the Mass, to the builders—Mike Tegethoff and A. C. “Sparky” Ginn, to Brother Daniel Eureste for the beautiful staining, and to Mary Jane Christen for the gorgeous flower arrange-ment. Your dedication, commitment, and presence made a tremendous impact on the activities of the event. I always marvel at your willingness to help when asked and this culture of service is what makes our council outstanding. You make a Grand Knight proud! Our activities never cease. At our business meeting on April 8, 2013, we started the distribution of the August 24, 2013 $100 Summer Fling Dinner/Dance/Raffle tickets. This year’s Summer Fling will be a repeat of our 2012 successful event. With the sale of only 350 tickets we expect they will sell out very fast again this year, so we are asking that you purchase yours in the very near future, help sell the tickets to your family, friends, work associates, etc., and above all, invite them to join us at this festive event. Summer Fling flyers will be available for you to take to your place of work, entertainment, church, or any other place you feel they would be effective.
To secure the $100 Summer Fling tickets and flyers contact Brother Ed Okonski @ 281-433-6835 or myself @ 713-861-6347 or if you prefer via email @ [email protected] and we will get them to you. Finally, I want to thank the Brother Knights who stepped forward and announced their candidacy for fraternal year 2013-2014 council officer positions. Any 3
rd Degree
Brother Knight in good standing is eligible to seek a council office. Attendance Prize Climbs to $120…The name of Brother Gregory J. Borski was drawn from the

at the April meeting to collect $110. The attendance prize

invite you to join your Brother Knights for a light meal

starting promptly at 7:00 p.m. There is one name drawn
at each meeting for the attendance prize. Could be yours…

“Special Thanks” to our wonderful supportive bingo customers (players) and our marvelous and dedicated bingo workers, Council 2917 Charitable Bingo was delighted to award this past quarter St. Rose of Lima Food Pantry, $2,000; Assumption Food Pantry, $2,000; and Monastery of the Infant Jesus in Lufkin, $2,000 for a total of $6,000. In addition to the charitable donations, the bingo operations paid the NorthSide Columbus Club a hall rental of $600 for each session. Every Friday the lovely ladies of the Ladies Auxiliary bake tasty pastries that they donate, and cook delicious food, which they serve and sell to our loyal players. All who contributed and made this generous donation possible, thank you so much!

NORTHSIDE COLUMBUS CLUB John Buck, President
Our grounds are looking FANTASTIC! The past several months we have been making many needed improvements to the grounds and buildings, and it was all for the better. Many of the improvements were made for the bazaar booth area for the KNIGHTS FOR LIFE FAMILY FUN DAY FESTIVAL this past April, and many were just maintenance needs on the grounds. If you were in attendance at the festival, you would have seen these improvements first-hand and you would have heard some of the compliments that we received on these improvements. For all of the workers that have assisted in making these improvements, and for all of our regular weekday and workday workers, THANK YOU! I may have received these compliments, but it was you men and ladies that did the work deserving the applause. On each compliment that I received, I always told people that it was not me alone, but an army of help that accomplished the work. We did this work for the festival with the intent of this festival becoming an annual event again on the council grounds. Now that we have the Bazaar Booth area made over, mention this to your church, place of employment, civic organization, or any group that may be looking for a place to have an outdoor festival, reunion, company picnic, or any other type of outdoor activity. We do rent the grounds out for these types of affairs. Not only are the booth and the pavillion available for rent, we also have a softball field that is available. I cancelled the April Saturday workday because many of the officers had prior engagements and if the officers are not available, we do not expect others to be there—"lead by example." We will resume the 3rd Saturday workday in May, so please come out and join the crowd.
NORTHSIDE COLUMBUS CLUB Floyd Rekieta, Secretary
The elections for the NorthSide Columbus Club Board will be held at the regular council meeting in June. Four member’s terms are expiring and we need to elect four members. If you want to run for the board, be at the meeting on June 11, or let someone know so they can nominate you.

FAMILY DIRECTOR John Buck We are near the end of our Fraternal Year, and I do not have any plans for the rest of the year, but we will start new and fresh in July. I would like to thank everyone that assisted in helping with the Knights for Life Family Fun Day. I was very pleased with the volunteer help. We surpassed ourselves by coming to the forefront of volunteering. Unfortunately, we did not have the crowd that we were expecting, but this did allow our volunteers time to visit with many Brother Knights from our Council, and from various other Councils. I will say that not only the men, but the women of Council 2917 not only came to volunteer their time to work the booths, they also came out to support this fundraiser. We should be proud of ourselves that we probably had the largest attendance of all of the other councils. Since I was handling the volunteer time slots and duties, I just want to give my thanks to all those that volunteered. Council 2917 showed up with pride and dignity. On a side note, over the past several years I have noticed a change in our Council. We have always been proud of Council 2917, and we still are, but over the 6-8 years we have evolved from not only being proud of what we do as a tight knit family at 2917, we have consistently grown further outside of our 2917 family to help outside of the council walls. Some of the ways we are now able to help outside the council are: Bingo is constantly growing and able to fund many more diverse charities; Casino Night is assisting four local Catholic Schools; Christmas Family Food and Assistance Program; KC Basketball Free Throw Contest. These are some of the diverse activities that we are now venturing into, and with more help from within the Council, we can improve the activities that we are working on, and move on to include other activities. Be a part of the everchanging Council 2917.
For several months we had discussed getting an altar for the council instead of having to use tables when we had a Mass. To save the high cost of purchasing an altar, I asked my brother-in-law, Mike Tegethoff, if he would make us an altar. Mike has a hobby of working with wood. He said he was excited and honored to have the opportunity to make such a majestic piece. I gave Mike the specifications and he soon got started. Nearing completion of the altar, he had an accident and severely cut his finger and regrettably, could not finish the altar. I asked a carpenter friend if he would finish the project, he completed the woodworking phase but it still needed to be stained. I asked a new member to Council 2917, Daniel Euresti, if he could complete the final phase of the altar, which was the staining and he most willing accepted. My brother-in-law, Mike and my carpenter friend, A.C. ‘Sparky’ Ginn, both non-members of Council 2917, along with Brother Daniel, donated their services for us. The result was a beautiful solid oak-stained altar. The altar was blessed and used for our first Mass on April 6, Knights for Life Family Festival. On behalf of Council 2917 I want to thank Mike, A.C. ‘Sparky’ Ginn and Brother Daniel, for the wonderful job they did on creating this beautiful altar. I want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for their financial support of the altar and the Catholic Daughters for the altar cloths. Members of the Tegethoff family who helped the creator, Mike, with the building of the altar. Mike’s wife, Carol, daughters Megan, Jessica, and Sarah with Mike in the back. Thank you lovely ladies for your support of this project.
Builders of the masterpiece: Brother Daniel Euresti, A.C. ‘Sparky’ Ginn, and Mike Tegethoff.

FOURTH DEGREE NEWS
What a display of the “visible arm of the Order” – 31 strong in full regalia serving as the honor guard for Bishop George Sheltz – and 9 in tuxedos and social baldric with the choir providing beautiful song and music at the Family Fun Day Festival Mass in Odin Hall on Saturday, April 6, 2013. This awesome display of colors made me feel proud to be a Brother Sir Knight. Thank you very much Sir Knights for your participation on April 6. On May 18, 2013, our very own Council 2917 Brother Knight and Msgr. George Wilhelm Assembly Fourth Degree Sir Knight, Seminarian Jesse Garcia is scheduled to be ordained a Transitional Deacon at 10:00 a.m. in the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston. The Fourth Degree Sir Knights are asked to assemble in full regalia at 9:15 a.m. to serve as the honor guard for Bishop George Scheltz, clergy, and the three Transitional Deacons. Brother Jesse, your Brother Knights of Council 2917 and Sir Knights of your assembly are excited by your elevation to a Transi-tional Deacon and pray for and support your continued journey to the priesthood. With the summer Fourth Degree Exemplification scheduled on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Mary Queen Church, 606 Cedarwood Drive, Friendswood, Texas, I ask my 3
rd
Degree Brother Knights to consider achieving the highest Degree of the Order. Simply give me a call at 713-861-6347 or get in touch by email at [email protected] and I will give you the details of the benefits and responsibilities of the Fourth Degree. While we are always 3
rd Degree Knights,
there is something special about being a Fourth Degree Sir Knight – won’t you consider joining us!

LADIES' AUXILIARY Delores Tobola
Ladies, I want to wish you all a blessed Mother's Day.
This is my last newsletter. I want to thank each and everyone of you that supported and helped me over the past four years. Your friendship is very special to me and I will cherish it always. Let us all continue to support the new officers that were elected at the April meeting and will be installed at the May meeting. Remember ladies, we do not meet in June, July and August.
Your newly elected officers are: President Kelly Clawson Vice-President Lydia Clifton Secretary Theresa Burkett Treasurer Sandra Rekieta
The installation of officers will be on May 15, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. It will be followed with a free meal for paid up members and their spouses. The telephone committee will be calling everyone to remind them.
You must call Lucille Clawson at 713-869-2018 by May 8 and confirm that you are going to attend. The meal will consist of chicken alfredo with spinach, garlic bread and dessert.
The Knights Summer Fling will be on August 24th. The Ladies' Auxiliary will again have the dessert booth. The telephone committee will call in early August as a reminder.
At our March meeting, we collected bottles of shampoo, conditioners, and lotions for the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. Sandra Rekieta and I went to visit the sisters to give them our donations. Sr. Brigid greeted us and was overwhelmed with the donations. Thank you to all who donated.
As you all know, we had our Knights for Life Festival and the Ladies Auxiliary had the cake raffle booth. Although we did not have the crowd we had hoped for, we did have a lot of cakes. I want to thank all you ladies who brought cakes or donated money to have cakes baked. I am so proud of you ladies for the wonderful response you gave to our request for cakes! I especially want to thank Sandra Rekieta for chairing the cake booth and to all the wonderful ladies that volunteered in the booth. For the Ladies Auxiliary, this festival was a success in participation! Workers in the kitchen for March were Angie Heinrich, Earline Okruhlik, Janie Okonski, Kathy Bronikowski, Theresa Burkett, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Mickie Wendt, Judy Wendt. Bakers were: Dorothy Urbanovsky, Earline Okruhlik, Kathy Bronikowski, Judy Wendt, Janie Okonski, Allie King.
For several months the Knights had talked about getting an altar for the Masses we celebrate at the hall instead of having to use tables stacked on tables. They decided to build the altar rather than purchase one. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary voted to use their funds to pay for the altar. Freedom Is Not Free
I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free. - Kelly Strong

After permission was granted to start our council, a number of interested members held their first meeting in the old wooden hall at Christ the King Parish on North Main Street, with District Deputy R. Conroy Scoggins presiding. At this time, Brother Scoggins told the group that Houston was the largest city that had only one Knights of Columbus Council and yet, it wasn’t the largest council in Texas—that honor belonged to Council 799 in Dallas. After some lively discussions, Bro. Scoggins was convinced that a second council was needed in Houston and maybe more would be formed. He made us a deal that if we secured at least 30 new applications, we could have class. So we spread the good news and went to work. We had a second meeting, which was larger than the first, in St. Joseph’s Parish Hall where several applications, transfers, and reinstate-ments were turned in. By now interest was mounting. With the help of our clergy, applications were pouring in so that a third meeting was held on a Sunday afternoon in All Saints Parish Hall. By now we had about 35 new applications. We were all set to hold our first elections. Dr. W.H. Eaton, a very charitable man, was elected our first Grand Knight. March 25, 1946, was set for our Charter Class, the initiation of which took place at the home of Houston Council 803, when 111 Catholic men became Charter Members of North Side Council 2917.
Rental of Council 2917 facilities are available for Wedding Receptions, Company Events, Quinceanera’s, Birthday Parties, Christmas Parties, Graduation Celebrations, etc. We have 3 halls and an outside pavillion to accommodate your needs. For details contact Mickie Wendt, hall manager 713-694-2341
