She courageously ventured out from Shepherd’s Field this spring when she was offered a job in Beijing, working in a pet store. After a month, she decided to look for something else and found a job she loves, as well as an apartment in Tongzhou all by herself. Anyone who has ever lived in Beijing will tell you this is no small task. Wendy is an inspiration to us all, and she’s very thankful for the job skills and other training she received at SFCV, which helped prepare her for this new independence. While Wendy’s story is inspiring, there’s still much work that needs to be done to help kids like her. In China, orphans who reach the age of 14 are no longer adoptable. By the time these aged- out orphans reach 15 or 16, their orphanages normally require them to leave. Healthy kids may get help finding work and somewhere to live, but teens with special needs or disabilities will be sent to an adult institution, where they’re often warehoused – hidden away from society. They’ll have little chance to develop normal relationships, live outside of an institution, or have regular jobs. We hope to change this with the opening of our new Vocational Center. Here we’ll teach older teens and young adults life skills, job skills, and finding purpose in their lives. It’s a huge undertaking, but with your prayers and support we’ll see more young people like Wendy succeed in life. Wendy Blazes a Trail

SFCV Happenings & More!

Growing Goodness in the GreenhouseThe veggies in the aquaponic greenhouse are growing well, thanks to Matthew Curtis, our volunteer from southern California, who’s the caretaker of the plants and fish in our greenhouse. Food safety is always a huge concern in China, so it’s a real blessing to have fresh, organically grown food year round.

Lucy (You Ruolian) is a four-month-old girl from Xuzhou, in Jiangsu Province. She has a brachial plexus injury of her right arm, as well as cardiomyopathy. She joined the House of Peace family.

Pippa (Yan Yongjia) is an eight-month-old girl from Nanping, Fujian Province. She’s got Roche skin syndrome, and is living with her new family in Samaritan’s House.

Welcome to Shepherd’s Field!

Our school kids colored and beautifully decorated more than 400 eggs for our annual Shepherd’s Field Easter Egg Hunt in March. The next day, Teacher Wang shouted, “Ready, set, go!” and the little ones were off, searching the back campus for the colorful oval treasures. The kids had a lot of fun filling their Easter baskets, and our staff and volunteers had a blast assisting the kids.

Say Happy Easter!

Kevin Needs a Forever Familypersonality has contributed to his therapeutic success. Kevin has worked very hard to expand his limits, and his life has been transformed. Our staff has focused on several areas, including speech and verbal skills; sign language; social and play skills; balance; core strength and stability; and lower extremity strength and range of motion. The kid who started out with little to no speech – wobbling and tripping about – has now developed into an extremely verbal boy who also has a well-controlled gait and steady balance. Like all orphaned children, Kevin needs a Forever Family of his very own. This sweet, seven-year-old boy is filled with joy, and has heaps of love to share with a family. You can help us advocate for Kevin by sharing his story on social media, as well as with your family and friends. Together, we can change Kevin’s life and help him find a home where he’ll be loved and cared for in a nurturing environment. We look forward to the day God blesses Kevin with a Mom and Dad, and maybe some siblings!

We Say GoodbyeYou Ruohuan, an 11-month-old girl with hereditary spherocytosis and epilepsy, arrived at SFCV on March 17 with pneumonia and a fever. Her condition was so poor that our medical team immediately took her to Bayi Hospital, where she was admitted on March 18. Unfortunately, she passed away the next day. Even though we never got to know her, we’re confident that she was loved and well cared for in her short life. Now she’s in a better place – with no pain, sorrow or suffering.

When Kevin (Yang Song) joined our therapy program in 2013 he was a quiet and bouncy, but physically unbalanced boy who could barely walk due to lower leg contractions that led to tripping and falling. Despite these frequent spasms and tumbles, Kevin has always maintained a positive outlook and is usually on the move – running, laughing and playing. His bright, loving
