arrested 19 people for various criminal activities over the past week. Constable Elvis Mongwe, spokesperson for the Phalaborwa police said fi ve people were arrested for theft, one for possession of dagga, one for warrant of arrest and one for rape.

One person was nabbed for assault common, one for common robbery, two for shoplifting, two for illegal hunting, one for burglary and four for possession of unlicensed fi rearm.

Constable Mongwe warns the community members to be aware

of bogus police who are robbing them money and valuable items.

He says they impersonate police offi cer by claiming to be police investigators and request to see cash and other belongings so that they can check and compare with the one that they claim it was stolen.

‘As soon as you give them they will disappear with your cash and belongings.

They target mostly youth and woman,’ said Mongwe.

He advises the community to be careful and report such people to the nearest police station.

Francois du Plessis wants to warn the public of fake USB fl ash drives being sold on the street.

He bought a fl ash drive next to the road where he paid R200, but later found out that it was a fake device. “I thought by spending so much money on it, it will be the real thing”, he stated.

Fake USB fl ash drives are sometimes sold, claiming to have higher capacities than they actually have. These are typically low capacity USB drives which are modifi ed so that they emulate larger capacity drives, for example, a 2 GB drive being marketed as an 8 GB drive.

When plugged into a computer, they report themselves as being the larger capacity they were sold as, but when data is written to them; the write fails, the drive freezes up, or it overwrites existing data.

Software tools exist to check and detect fake USB drives, and in some cases it is possible to repair these devices to remove the false capacity information and use them normally. H2testw is a free tool that can be used to test for Counterfeit or Fake USB fl ash drives, and check your USB Flash Drive for errors.

Be careful when buying a USB fl ash drive; don’t fall into the same trap!

4 PHALABORWA HERALD Friday September 19, 2014ALGEMEEN

“Dit is waar ek my geld gemaak het”, sê hy.

M u s e u m e i l a n d opgerig is.

BN Ntsanwisi Primary School in Lulekani held an Entrepreneurs Day for grade 7 learners to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills last Friday.

The learners successfully applied the skills they were taught in Economic and Management Science.

The event was part of the EMS project for assessment. The learners were tested on their marketing and sales skills, which included managing an income, expenditure and profi t.

The learners sold a wonderful variety of

eats, movies and dance shows. They also learnt to spent their pocket money and received a loan from their parents.

The EMS teacher, Maureen Tinstwalo Mhlongo Mhlari said parents were supportive in the initiative as some of the children had home cooked meals as part of their project.

‘I thank the school principal and other teachers for their support.

The money raised will go towards the grade 7 farewell,’ said Mhlari.

WASTE FACTORY: Phalaborwa waste under new management.

Two Ba-Phalaborwa businesspeople, Willie Ramoshaba and Sonto Chawane have bought the only non-metal recycling business in Phalaborwa from its previous owner, Lawrence Goddard.

The offi cial handover ceremony was conducted at the company premises last Tuesday.

Goddard captured the mood of the occasion when he said to his former staff members that ‘Believe me when I say that I am a good judge of character. I have refused to sell this business to many other people as I told you before. This was until Willie approached me more than six months ago leading to the fi nalisation of the sale agreement with him and his friend, Sonto, this past month.

The only reason I agreed to sell to them was because I felt it in me that they will be able to take care of you, and to grow the business to higher limits’. Speaking on behalf

of the two new buyers, Ramoshaba said ‘Yes, recycling to me and my partner is a business which needs to be run on the same business fundamentals like any other business. But this is not the only reason that motivated us to buy this business. We were equally driven by the desire to see the poor of the poor of our people being taken care of properly.’

The business employed 18 people at its factory and over 20 self-employed material collectors. The partners have made an open invitation to the people of Ba-Phalaborwa to join hands with them in creating more jobs and to take care of the environment through recycling. ‘Some 10 years ago the town of Phalaborwa was voted the cleanest town in the whole of South Africa. We do not see the reason why that honour cannot be restored to this beautiful town of ours which we all so dearly love,’ concluded Ramoshaba.

Kingfisher launches Wild Dog Awareness Project

Kingfi sher launched its latest eco-school project during the inter-school cross country event held at the bow club on August 30.

Kingfi sher has been an eco-school for 3 years now and has developed a fantastic new project for its third year. The school is hoping to raise awareness for the plight of the Wild Dog or Painted Wolf or Cape Hunting dog, depending on whichever name you prefer to use. The African Wild Dog is known by all three names and is South Africa’s most endangered carnivore with only an estimate 500-600 left in the region and only 6600 estimated to survive in the whole of Africa.

The project is designed to create awareness on a global scale. The initiative is not a fund-raising project but donations can be made to EWT to fund their projects. It is hoped that by sending the message across the globe through participating schools that the children will learn something about these amazing carnivores which in the end can contribute to their existence.

The project was initiated by Mel Owtram who wrote a short children’s story about a pack of wild dogs that is continually being forced to move home after facing

all sorts of different problems. Eventually they fi nd a new safe place to live and settle down and start a new pack.

Through the help of a number of sponsors and people who have given their time and expertise the project has developed. There are 10 dogs (soft toys donated by Jenny Goncalves) in the story and each one has its own name tag and collar for identifi cation purposes (donated by Phalaborwa Dierekliniek and Phalaborwa Jewelers). They are transported around the globe from one school to another inside their crates (donated by HESC).

Once a school receives their dog they will read the story to the children using the soft toy to bring the story to life.
