Cover Story

Nawarrah Park Lady's Man (Imp) Sire: Nawarrah Park Jordaches Dam: Radnor Fair Lady Bred by: Howe Family of Nawarrah Park Stud in Victoria Owned by: Dawn Elliot

Nawarrah Park Lady's Man has been a real one in a million pony for me. He was originally imported from Australia by Bev Hewson but I was lucky enough to be able to purchase him from Bev in 2010. He is a true welsh pony with good bone and excellent conformation, but his most notable feature would be his fantastic elevated movement which he has been consistently passing on to his progeny, together with his exceptional temperament. He is an easy stallion to have around and anyone, including children, can visit him while he is free in his paddock. He knows the routine well - come up and say hello to the visitors, then a couple of laps of the paddock to show off his amazing trot, before returning to say goodbye.

Lady's Man had a hugely successful show career, in four seasons he won the NZWPCS Punga Trophy for inhand showing three times and was second once. He won numerous Champions and Reserves, far too many to mention, and has 19 Supreme Welsh Exhibits to his name. He has an amazing record in All Breeds Supremes, winning 8 All Breed Supreme Awards from the 10 times he went forward, and is also the current holder of the NZWPCS Section B Sires Ratings Award for the fourth year in succession.

Lady's Man's success is now being passed on to his progeny, with many of them following in his footsteps in the show ring. Once again far too many to list, but some notable mentions are Cedar Park Regal Man (Bendigo Precious Gem) - Supreme Purebred Exhibit at the Southland All Welsh Show 2013, Skibbereen Serenity (Kylandee Chintz) - Supreme Purebred Exhibit at the South Island All Welsh Show 2014, Nawarrah Park Camilla (Nawarrah Park Carisma) - Supreme All Breeds Exhibit at the Canterbury A&P Show 2014 and Hollybank Wee Whisper (Karanga Windchime) - Supreme Purebred Exhibit at the South Island All Welsh Show 2016.

Here at Hollybank Stud there are four imported mares due to Lady's Man this coming season - Amaranda Charmian, Karanga Lady Arabella, Bamborough Alexia and Hazelmere Vanita. Many more exciting times ahead!

Presidents Notes

Marlene Schroder

Spring is a busy and exciting time for pony and cob breeders, in this Newsletter is a copy of the guidelines and regulations for registering your foals, please read this carefully and remember to send your registration forms and payments to the Secretary, also note the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of New Zealand have recently updated the News Page on the Website. It is also a busy and exciting time for those who are preparing ponies and cobs for the Show Season, particularly busy now preparing for the early Spring Shows. Northern A & P Assn at Rangiora are hosting the Royal event for the equestrian Section in October this year. At the time of writing we are enjoying beautiful sunny days after a frosty start, lambs are leaping and daffodils are blooming, I just hope we are not being lulled into a false sense that winter is over before it has begun. I just hope we can have a mild winter next year when we will be hosting the AGM in Marlborough. We are hoping members will make the effort to come for the weekend, attend the AGM, enjoy a social meal on Saturday night and meet your Councillors and Office Holders. Also on the Sunday we hope enough of you will stay and enjoy some of the sights we could arrange to show you if there is enough interest. Details of dates and entertainments will be in later Newsletters. Best Wishes for a successful season.

Recipient of the Society’s South Island Service Certificate

CHRISSY JENKINS

Chrissy became a member in 1980 and served some time on Council, from 2001 to 2005 she was the South Island Public Relations Officer and for some time was Secretary for the South Island Council meetings in the days when they were held in someone’s home. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s she bred some Sec C and Sec D ponies, using the Stallions Lorien Ivor Jones and Bolgoed Merry Madog

Chrissy was also a keen competitor in the Show ring particularly driving her harness ponies. For many years she has been a worker for what is now the Canterbury Welsh Pony & Cob Group filling many roles from Show Secretary to general dogsbody. When this group was the Promotions group they ran Field days and Promotional stalls at some Shows and Chrissy was a valuable worker. A lot of her work has been done behind the scenes which generally goes unappreciated, only those of you who work to put on a Show will know what it takes.

The contribution she has made to the Welsh Section at Shows in and around Canterbury is on-going and worth recognising, not only as a worker and an organiser but also as an exhibitor and judge.

Nominated by Marlene Schroder Seconded by Lois Newick

Council Member Profile

Philip Peters As a newly elected council member to the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand I was asked to write a profile for the newsletter. So here’s a little bit about myself. I live in Levels Valley Timaru where I farm in partnership with my family on our 124ha deer farm. My passion for breeding stags for Velvet. I was introduced to the section B welsh pony five years ago, when I started showing after buying a Colt Hollybank Royal Silver. His sire is Nawarrah Park Lady”s Man and his dam is Bendigo Royal Charm. One of my colts Te Hepe White Cloud took out the Gundagai Trophy for best purebred welsh foal at the 2016 Canterbury All Breeds foal Show.

Health Notes

CLUB FEET

Emily Ensor BSc, BVSc and WP&CSoc member

The following article is only for educational purposes; please contact your own veterinarian for advice regarding your own welsh ponies and cobs.

Club feet are a common problem in equines. There are several different reasons for ponies and horses to have feet of different shape and/or angle.

The first can be caused by a simple congenital defect. They are obviously small boxy feet with an upright dorsal wall. It can occasionally be caused by a shorter limb, but can occur in an apparently normal foal.

The second is an “acquired” club foot. There are two main reasons for this occurring.

• The first is the most serious and is caused by a flexural deformity (tightening of the ligaments in the hoof). This is usually caused by a traumatic injury or any type of caudal foot pain.

• The second is due to lateralised behaviour, which will be discussed below.

The flexural deformity results in increased angulation and shortening of the dorsal hoof wall and the heels elongate. The hoof appears to suddenly become very upright, and the heels may not even touch the ground – it is often referred to as the ballerina stance. The true club foot occurs when the heels grow down to reach the ground, and the foal ends up walking on the tip of the toe and overgrown heels.

If the condition is recognised immediately, the prognosis is reasonable. However if the hoof is neglected or it is a severe club foot, the prognosis is very poor for athletic function.

The condition is recognisable if the change is moderate/severe however more subtle club feet can be more difficult to pick up.

If they are left with no treatment, the conformational fault can cause serious damage internally, due to the toe and dorsal wall tearing. Bone remodelling may also take place. These changes are very similar to those that occur in laminitis.

With the flexural deformity it is essential that underlying disease process causing the pain in the hoof is identified, as this will have a large part to play in the treatment and recovery.

Adequate and experienced farriery is essential. Early and mild cases may just need correct and frequent trimming. Heel rasping, toe extension and even a light glue-on shoe may be required.

Severe cases need aggressive treatment. This will also include the above treatment, dietary and exercise management, and in some cases surgery. The surgery involves cutting the tendons which have become too tight, which can immediately improve the condition. The procedure occasionally needs to be repeated – prognosis in these cases is very poor.

Often lateralised behaviour, where a foal shows preference for placing one particular foot forward when it is eating grass, can result in an upright hoof.

The foals’ legs are often long compared to the rest of its body, (and they have a comparatively short neck), and this makes it difficult for the head to reach the ground, without the lateralisation behaviour.

Page 15: WELSH PONY & COB SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND...Ph 06 844 2610 jjkids@xtra.co.nz Sire Rating Convenors South Island Sire Rating Convenors Willow Trophy Adrianne Lill-Hey Julie Bagrie P O

13

Those foals that show a preference for one particular foot always being placed forward – this hoof ends up having a lower angle, and the hoof that is always back develops at a steeper angle, a more upright hoof.

It can rarely be due to a congenital difference in the limb length, but this can be very difficult to recognise.

There are couple of ways of reducing the odds of this lateralisation behaviour and therefore odd angled hooves. • The first is to provide the foal with long pasture. This stops the foal continually grazing with a

preference for one hoof forward, as they are not struggling to get close to the ground to graze. And the added benefit is that the foal will get health benefits out of grazing the seed heads that are full of plenty of nutritional goodness.

• The second option would be allowing the foals to feed from hay nets once old enough, if there is not enough long pasture to ensure they are not carrying out the lateralisation behaviour.

• The third method is to graze the foals on hills, as they are less likely to use the lateralisation behaviour with no preference for a particular hoof forward in that situation.

Horses with congenital ‘boxy’ hooves (mildly affected) with no apparent cause, can perform normally as a ridden horses.

However, it is important to recognise that often adult horses’ hooves can become upright due to abnormal loading as a result of a problem higher up the leg, and it can also occur due to deep digital flexor contracture, as a result of foot pain, most commonly seen in laminitis.

As with any foot problem, it is essential to get rapid and experienced help with treating the problem. Leaving a foal with a club or angled hoof, even if it is just from lateralisation behaviour, may result in a horse or pony that does not perform to the desired level.

It is important to remember that foals grow so incredibly rapidly and any abnormal loading on limbs, due to club feet can also potentially affect future limb conformation and or soundness.

Golden rule: Always seek help with any change in hoof appearance in ponies and horses of any age!

Reasons for Mare DNA Explained

Compiled by Sheryl Collins

One of the main objectives of the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of NZ is to ensure the integrity of the Welsh Stud Book and Partbred Register. With the availability of DNA to confirm parentage of our purebred ponies and cobs it would be remiss of the WPCS not to use this tool to ensure this objective is met.

To start with stallions first made good sense because stallions were responsible for many more foals than mares and it was more likely any questions of parentage were directed at sires – this meant that foal owner, that didn’t own the sire, didn’t have to pay for sire DNA.

It was really rewarding that all our members seem to understand the reasoning behind DNA of stallions and with only one exception (a non-member – who years later did get it done!) all older stallions were DNA’d within a relatively short time.

It was always envisaged the mare would follow around 5 years later and so when this was asked for at the Timaru AGM great thought had already gone into the most efficient, least expensive way to introduce this.

Why WPCS decided on DNA for brood mares before registering their foals Lead-in period – if we had started with: • Filly Foals or Maiden mares it would be 10 or more years before all our foals would have their

parentage DNA confirmed. This was the same reason we required our older stallions to be done rather than just those applying for Stallion Registrations.

• Broodmares (when registering their foal) - all foals from this season on are parent verified. Cost • Filly Foals o This would also mean foal breeders would have to pay for DNA; making registering a filly foal

very expensive and this added expense may be hard to recuperate in the current market. o Also not all filly foals go on to breed a foal. They may die or just spend their lives as children

ridden ponies. Hence the breeder has outlaid for DNA which was never needed. • Broodmares (before registering a foal) o only proven broodmare need to be DNA’d o Since being informed of this new regulations breeders will have over 2 years to get the dam

of this seasons foals DNA typed. Remembering they do not have to be done until registering this season foal. This time is made up of: § Time between notification and foaling § Up until 31 May 2017 to register the foal § Up until 31 May 2018 to register the foal with a late fee of $20.

Summary Luckily the vast majority of our breeders are honest but mistakes can happen. Mares can swap foals and Breeders may not be aware of things like • mares should not be served by a different stallion within 42 days • mares should not be run with another stallion even if scanned or tested as in foal Now all foals have their DNA verified the WPCS can be assured it meets the objective of ensuring the integrity of the Welsh Stud Book and Partbred Register.

Different Ideas

Compiled by Sheryl Collins Breeding and Showing Your Stallion

As most of the stallions shown in the ring are also used to service mares balancing the emotional and physical stress of actively competing with breeding can be challenging. Stallions are individuals so while most may be able to handle competing and breeding there will be those that for stamina or behaviour reasons just won’t able to handle both.

While most shows are one day trips and cause no problems with serving mares major shows that may be longer can be a problem, especially if he is serving outside mares.

It is unlikely a stallion that runs with his mares would be able to be shown regularly during his mating season as they generally lose too much condition for showing. This can be overcome by mating mares earlier or later than an important show and separating him from the mares for a fortnight before to both feed him well and remind him of his showing training.

Nutrition The stallions that are serving and showing need to be fed like performance horses rather than breeding animals. There are certain ingredients, like omega-3 fatty acids, that can help improve semen parameters, but no specific ingredient will increase fertility better than a well-balanced diet and healthy body condition. However if you do wish to add any supplement to your stallion’s ration, you should consult your veterinarian first. Some supplements and medications frequently used to enhance performance can be detrimental to the stallion’s fertility.

Infectious Disease Vaccinating stallions at least 60 days prior to breeding season and maintaining vigilant biosecurity measures at the show grounds is critical for keeping double-duty stallions performing in all arenas. But even when owners take these measures, there is always a risk of them catching an infectious upper respiratory disease while on the show circuit. If your stallion contracts a high fever, he will most likely lose his appetite, stamina, and libido in the near term, and you might still be dealing with the side effects on his semen quality six weeks from now, which is a good portion of the breeding season.

Stress All horses, regardless of gender or age, appreciate familiarity and routine. Change is considered one of horses’ biggest stress factors. When stressed, horses release the hormone cortisol. This hormone causes the stressed stallion to kick into survival mode, in which reproduction becomes a luxury rather than a necessity. Breeding season is not the time to be making any major changes to the stallion’s exercise, management, or feeding routine.

Establish a consistent routine for your stallion, and if possible, breed him in an area that he can learn to associate with breeding only and show train him in another area.

Responsibility Serving - Stallion owners must keep outside mare owners and fellow competitors in mind when making the decision to service and show. If you are going to show during breeding season, you must be forthright with the mare owners booked to your stallion as this timing of shows & health may cause concerns

Showing - From a safety perspective, there are certainly some challenges when competing on a stallion. Even very well-mannered horses have the potential to be tempted into situations that could prove dangerous. Any mares that travel to the show in the float must not be in season. Never leave him tied to the trailer without supervision just in case another horse was to get loose and come over to him.
