Clubs are a pivotal part of both the Welsh Athletics structure and each athlete’s personal development. It is therefore natural that, given the central role played by the clubs, a range of initiatives have been established to support and develop their activities.

- The Run, Jump, Throw initiative in Wales looks to help facilitate the delivery and experience of introductory athletics to young developing athletes in a multitude of ways. There are 2 key features of the initiative - the RJT Workshops and the RJT Resources.

The workshop allows for initial, informal training of new volunteers and those looking at delivering athletics activities to young athletes, the resources can be utilised by clubs, facilities, schools as a way of enhancing the programme of

opportunity available to young athletes.

- Welsh Athletics, in partnership with the other home countries has developed a Volunteer Framework to support volunteering in Wales and present a strategy for volunteering.

Volunteers are an essential part of athletics in Wales. Clubs, which are the very foundation of the sport, rely heavily on the volunteer support network and the many people that generously give their time to help deliver events and provide opportunities in athletics.

- Welsh Athletics is currently working with clubs within the sport and assisting with club development in an attempt to improve club structures and ensure the sustainability of clubs. A number of clubs are currently working towards an athletics specifi c ClubMark award. This award is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that affi liated clubs operate to a set of consistent and accepted minimum operating standards.

Welsh Athletics recognises that there is a need to develop clubs which encourage young people to take-up sport, improve their talents and initiate and maintain life-long participation in sport. Clubs achieving ClubMark status are recognised as providing a ‘safe, effective and child friendly’ club environment.

These initiatives have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark.

Following the success of last year’s Run Wales Series, 2012 will see its profi le and support extended to non-Championship races, with a deeper prize structure aimed at raising the level of performance.

- Open to all Welsh registered athletes- Best 5 scores for each athlete count- 50 points for 1st placed athlete, then descending through race results for all fi nishing runners- Double points for Welsh Championships events (excluding Welsh Road Relays)

The new TRX Challenge Series (Track, Road, X-Country) will involve Welsh Championships track, cross country and road endurance events to fi nd the most versatile long-distance runner in Wales.
