EDITOR'S NOTE

[ firs! fros! — ISSUE NO.12]

>> WITH A CHILL IN THE AIR & LOVE IN YOUR HEART, CELEBRATE THE HIDDEN BOUNTIES OF THE WINTER SEASON.

when the trees deck themselves in fiery finery & the first silver snowflakes drift past on the icy air, it’s impossible to ignore the sheer enchantment of upstate new york’s colder months. these quiet seasons hold in their hearts the magic of possibility: brisk temperatures & shorter days promise a warmth & intimacy, whether you’re the only two people in the world or you’re celebrat-ing the season with a joyful crowd.

let these dreamy days inspire you to make your mark on your wedding day festivities with uniquely hand-crafted projects that capture the essence of your love. bundle up to find gems from the finger lakes’ trove of thrifted treasures, and snuggle up to create homespun diy touches for your wedding—buckle your boots and button your coat to seek wedding inspiration from the blazing leaves or snow-blanketed mountainsides of the adirondacks. all the muse you need is waiting in the natural beauty of new york’s fall and winter seasons.

for us, fall and winter’s most magical moments are the ones that evoke the essence of the season. as we sip cups of cocoa and watch the swirling leaves change to snowflakes outside our office windows, we make note of the colors, knowing that they’ll inspire the palettes in our pages. in fall, we watched transfixed as poppy-orange leaves blazed against a cloudless azure sky, the same bold combination you see in “under autumn’s awning” page [91]. still-hot slices of apple pie and mugs of mulled cider, crunching leaves, and bushels of blushing apples come to life in “flush of romance” page [107]. “forever green” page [123] captures the promise of spring that lies hidden in the soul of winter pines. the glittering wonder of the first snowfall is the icy inspiration for “white-washed in love” page [75]. let these palettes inspire you as you hone and focus your ideas to create your own enchanted wedding wonderland.

here @ wellwed, we have a passion for heirloom accents and details that reflect your history and your passions, and we think these cuddle-up-inside days are the perfect opportunity to brainstorm special touches of your own. here’s hoping your love and our pages inspire you to create a celebration that’s everything you’ve dreamed of.

shades of cream, taupe & caramel coupled with platinum & gold, gave jennifer & brett’s wedding a lux-urious look. bridesmaids in black satin & an abundance of sparkle enhanced the upscale atmosphere.

[THE COUPLE’S PALETTE]

>> FINDING INSPIRATION IN EVERYDAY OBJECTS, KELLI BERG BRINGS A FRESH LOOK TO EVERY FABULOUS FÊTE SHE DESIGNS.

inspired by a family tradition of entrepreneurship, launching simply beautiful events in 2000 came naturally for kelli berg. originally envisioning a career in graphic design, kelli now translates her inher-ently keen eye & professional design sensibilities into the aesthetics of every stunning affair she crafts. “from logistics & room layout, to sketching inspirations for decor & color palettes, i use my design skills on an everyday basis,” she says.

kelli ’s PROCESS for kelli, inspiration tends to flow natural-ly after the initial meeting with a couple & hearing their personal love story. “when i’m planning & designing with a couple, the process is organic & gradual,” she says. kelli encourages people to look beyond what they initially envisioned for their day & to go outside of their comfort zones to create something truly inspired & amazing.

envisioning a local wedding celebration that felt like a destination affair, jennifer & brett sought kelli’s help to make their dreams a reality. kelli combined an abun-dance of luxe details to complement the opulent decor, exuding a faraway feel.

hillary + chrisTHE LURE OF A PRIVATE WINTER WONDERLAND DREW HILLARY & CHRIS TO UPSTATE NEW YORK FOR THEIR HARMONIOUS CELEBRATION. AMID THE CHARM OF THE APPEL INN, THE COUPLE CELEBRATED WITH AN AFFAIR THAT EXUDED SPARKLING GLAMOUR & RUSTIC BRAVURA.THE DAY. Hillary Scott and Chris Tyrrell know how to throw a party, and their upstate New York wedding, which served up wintertime charm with a heaping helping of Southern comfort, was no exception. Their wedding setting was pure winter wonderland, with glittering details, shimmering mercury glass, luminous pearl, and pewter accents adding elegance to more playful details like flocked Christmas trees and hand-scripted snowflake place cards strung by soft fabric swaging. A heated tent offered an intimate oasis free from the frost, while a bounty of cozy lounge furniture and family-style tables set the tone for relaxed fun. Magical details, like snow flurries during the outdoor chapel ceremony and on the dance floor, more than one thousand glowing candles illuminating the reception, and breathtaking icicle chandeliers, made every moment memorable. A heart-warming hot toddy station helped take the edge off the chill, ensuring that the frosty landscape was as inviting as it was inspiring.

THE DESIGN. Hillary and Chris wanted their celebration to sparkle in a totally personal way, so they called on a team of seasoned professionals to help them realize their vision. Working closely with event designer David Michael Schmidt, of Renaissance Floral Design, planner Angela Proffitt transformed the couple’s dreams into an enchanted wedding design. Down-home, family-style dishes, expertly crafted by Mansion Catering, let guests choose their favorite fare from hand-hewn farm tables, adding to the intimate atmosphere as guests shared cuisine and conversation. Special touches—including an abundance of cotton accents—tied the couple’s Southern roots to the New York state locale and ensured that everyone felt right at home.

THE WEDDING WEEKEND. Hillary and Chris dove right into wedding planning, wanting their guests to have as much fun celebrating their unique love story as they did. Their wedding weekend introduced friends and family to the area during one of its most beautiful seasons, sharing the true charm of the locale in the frosty months. The fun-filled weekend—which featured comfortable Saratoga accommodations, lots of relaxation time, and a friendly bowling night—was capped off by the couple’s heartfelt marriage ceremony, which hit all of the right notes.

LIANA & MATTHEW DREAMED OF A COUNTRY—CHIC RED BARN WEDDING WITH AUTHENTIC DETAILS & PLENTY OF VIVID FALL CHARM. THEY FOUND THEIR DREAM SETTING AMID THE AUTUMNAL BEAUTY OF IDYLLIC LODI, NEW YORK.

After months of living the single life in New York City—think Friday nights spent looking at prospective cat adoptions online—Liana Thomas gave into her brother’s pleas, and signed up for an online dating service. In a twist of perfect timing, her very first date was with Matthew Gebhardt, her future husband. “Matthew was a true gentleman and courted me with a series of thoughtful, artfully curated, and foodie-centric dates,” Liana says. “I think we were both hooked from date one—the rest is for the storybooks.”

LIANA & MATTHEW WANTED THEIR SPECIAL DAY TO SHOWCASE EVERY FACET OF THEIR PERSONAL STYLES. “WE DREW INSPIRATION FROM OUR DIFFERENT UPBRINGINGS & OUR SHARED ADVENTURES. OUR STYLE IS CLASSIC, PUNK, CRAFTY, SARTORIAL, STREET, COUNTRY & COWBOY.”

liana + ma!ew

THE PROPOSAL. To celebrate both the couple’s second anniversary, and Liana’s graduation from culinary school, Matthew planned a road trip through the Colorado Rockies, which concluded in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “We arrived in time for the city’s magical Fiesta celebrations,” Liana remembers. “In the heart of the plaza, Matthew proposed with a handmade Navajo turquoise ring.” Matthew explained that the ring was one of three meant to symbolize different places in their lives. The turquoise was for Matthew’s Southwestern roots, a Tiffany diamond came later to represent the couple’s New York City home, and finally the couple’s wedding bands completed the trio.

THE CEREMONY. Originally slated to exchange vows overlooking Seneca Lake, inclement weather forced Liana and Matthew indoors to the barn that would host their reception. The change of venue ended up suiting the couple. The highlight of the ceremony? Liana booked a mariachi band as a surprise for Matthew. “Just as our vows were completed, the barn doors parted behind us and the mariachi band started playing. Matthew was completely shocked,” Liana recalls fondly. In hindsight, Liana says she wouldn’t have been able to pull off such a flawless surprise with an outdoor ceremony.

THE DAY & DESIGN. Wanting to blend as many of their interests and passions as possible, Liana and Matthew’s wedding inspirations included everything from favorite children’s books to traditional Mexican art. Liana is a chef and event planner, while Matthew works as an artist, designer, and producer, so each brought a heightened sense of creativity to their celebration. The couple’s first priority was a relaxed, loose environment that made their loved ones comfortable and ready to hit the dance floor. “Our focus was on our guests and creating experiences for them to enjoy,” they say.

megan + ryanTHE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE QUAINT TOWN OF NEW PALTZ WAS JUST WHAT MEGAN & RYAN WERE LOOKING FOR. A CHEERY PALETTE OF SOFT GREY & BRIGHT APPLE GREEN REFLECTED BOTH THE SPLENDOR OF THE AUTUMN SEASON & THEIR LONG—STANDING LOVE.BEFORE THE RING. Megan Holly and Ryan Witko met as sophomores in high school during a time when their shared lunch period continually brought them together. To Megan, Ryan was always uniquely himself; to Ryan, Megan was smart and pretty. The pair became good friends, and took their relationship to the next level when Megan asked Ryan to the Coronation Dance. They dated until college, and reconnected years later, quickly realizing that they couldn’t live without one another.

THE PROPOSAL. The smitten duo had been discussing marriage for some time—and had even taken a trip to Tiffany’s to peruse rings—so Megan was eagerly awaiting the magic moment. Soon enough, the couple traveled to Maine for Memorial Day weekend. “We made a special day trip to Peaks Island off the coast of Portland,” Megan says. “As we walked around the edge of the island, Ryan found the perfect spot for us to sit.” As they basked in the glow of their beautiful surroundings, Ryan reached into his backpack and pulled out a ring.

THE CEREMONY. Wanting their ceremony to be a special part of the day, Megan and Ryan were excited to plan their nuptial program together. “Creating our ceremony was truly one of the most important and meaningful parts of the entire wedding planning experience,” Megan says. An interview process with their officiant ensured that every element of their vows meshed with their personalities. Early on, Ryan had voiced a desire for the ceremony to be “interesting,” so he and Megan opted to include a time for two couples close to them to read pieces of “marriage wisdom.”

THE DAY & DESIGN. Initially nervous about the unruly weather of New York state in the fall, Megan and Ryan were delighted to wake up to clear, sunny skies on their wedding day. “The good weather really let the beauty of our location shine,” Megan says. Under the golden glow of the autumn sun, guests celebrated while indulging in a quirky photobooth, complete with a wide selection of fun props. A final highlight for the couple: they made a last-minute choice to order cakes from their favorite bakery in New York City—Momofuku Milk Bar—and deliver them to New Paltz themselves.

FOR JOSIE & NATE, JOSIE’S HOMETOWN OF NAPLES PERFECTLY EMBODIED THE SPIRIT OF ROMANCE. THE AREA’S INTIMATE SETTINGS & THE AWE—INSPIRING NATURAL SCENERY OF THE FINGER LAKES REGION PAINTED THE PERFECT BACKDROP.

While Josie Ingle hails from upstate New York and Nate Holden from the green mountains of Vermont, the dynamic duo’s paths merged in the months leading up to college. The pair first met during a summer program for incoming freshman, and began officially dating soon thereafter. Proving that first impressions go a long way, the couple never looked back. “We dated all through college and also got engaged while still in school,” Josie says.

ENVISIONING A COZY RECEPTION RIFE WITH RUSTIC, ROMANTIC DETAILS & HOMESPUN CHARM, JOSIE & NATE BASED THEIR WEDDING DÉCOR ON AN AUTUMNAL PALETTE OF DEEP CHOCOLATE BROWNS & UNDERSTATED TERRACOTTA TONES.

josie + nate

THE PROPOSAL. After sharing four special years together during college, Josie and Nate knew in their hearts that they were meant to be together forever. Despite being so comfortable with their love, Josie was still surprised when, one day during their senior year, Nate asked her the ultimate question. “Nate took me down to the beach by our school where we had first met,” she recalls. “He asked me what my favorite memory was of us being together, and by the time I said, ‘when you asked me out for the first time,’ he was already down on one knee.”

THE CEREMONY. Josie and Nate knew a traditional church wedding was exactly what they wanted. After deciding on a church near Josie’s hometown, the couple set to work personalizing their nuptials. “One part of the ceremony that was special to us was the rose ceremony, which involved an exchange of roses between us to show our love for one another,” Josie explains. “We will continue this tradition throughout our marriage. Whether after an argument or on an anniversary, we put a white rose out to display our love for one another.”

THE DAY & DESIGN. Keeping with an intimate, country-chic theme, Josie and Nate made long, farm-style tables a focal point of their reception, ensuring that their wedding dinner truly brought their loved ones together. Luxe clusters of seasonal blooms and plenty of glowing candles illuminated an outdoor lounge area, where guests mingled amidst the rugged beauty of the Finger Lakes. A final special detail symbolized the couple’s union and their respective backgrounds. “I had our initials, a grape leaf, and a maple leaf intertwined together. This showed how we came together from two different states,” Josie says.
