Carrie Scribner has harbored a lifelong passion for all things floral. After years of working as a graphic designer, putting her fine art degree to use, she was ready for a change of pace. In a case of serendipity, Carrie learned that a favorite local flower shop—owned by a Dutchman and his wife—was closing. “I knew if I wanted to be happy, I needed to create with my hands and be my own boss,” she explains. “When the couple said they were closing, I asked if they were inter-ested in selling the business.”

DUTCH BLOEMEN WINKEL: Soon enough, Dutch Bloemen Winkel sprouted to life. Today, the European-style flower shop and floral design business continues to provide couples with original designs for their nuptials. Next year, Carrie plans to start cut flower gardens, with the hope of walking clients through the beautiful foliage and choosing the blooms that will be in their wedding designs.

As a child, Meg Simone found herself transfixed by film, weddings, and the delicate nuance of the relationship between the two. “I constantly watched my family members’ wedding films. They were all on Super 8 without sound, but I was always fasci-nated that you could preserve these memories and relive life’s most precious moments,” Meg recalls. KATE & ALEX CHOSE THE CHARMING TOWN OF PORTSMOUTH FOR THEIR AUTUMN NUPTIALS BECAUSE OF ITS CLASSIC COMBINATION OF HISTORIC ELEGANCE & COZY RUSTICITY. THEY FELL IN LOVE WITH THE INHERENT ROMANCE OF THE LOCATION.

Like so many modern couples, Kate Roberts and Alex Ayers initially connected online. Kate was a junior in college, while Alex was just starting to navigate the working world. A spark between the two was evident after their first date, the couple recalls. “We shared a lot of the same tastes, and since we both have a background in the arts, we had lots to talk about,” Kate says. The couple’s connection deepened as their relationship grew over the next year. Kate remembers her sister remarking early on that the pair seemed destined to marry.

THE PROPOSAL. Residents of Boston’s picturesque Fenway neighborhood, Kate and Alex regularly took walks in the Fens to admire the park and gardens and to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. One June evening, as the couple waited for a nearby restaurant to open, Alex suggested they pass the time in the park. After a few moments among the flowers, Alex took Kate’s hand and asked her to be his wife. “When he let go of my hand, it turned out that he’d placed the ring there—what he called ‘the magician’s reveal’—I honestly didn’t see it coming,” Kate says.

KATE & ALEX WANTED A LOOK OF ORGANIC SOPHISTICATION WITH PLENTY OF EYE-CATCHING FLORAL DETAILS. “WE LOVE MOODY HUES & DRAMATIC SHAPES, SO WE WERE DRAWN TO FLOWERS LIKE SUCCULENTS, COLEUS & DUSTY MILLER,” KATE SAYS.

THE CEREMONY. Kate arrived at the couple’s ceremony in an authentic horse-drawn carriage. Upon her arrival, the couple exchanged vows next to a picturesque fountain in New Hampshire’s crisp fall air. To add a personal touch to her “I dos,” Kate carried a small, lace handkerchief that belonged to her grandmother, and had her bouquet pinned with a silver luckenbooth, a Scottish love token, given to her by her mother. Complete with a reading from The Velveteen Rabbit and meaningful music, Kate and Alex’s nuptial ceremony was a perfect reflection of their special love story. THE DAY & DESIGN. Using Kate’s favorite color—purple—as the basis for their classic and sophisticated palette, the couple set the scene for an unforgettable celebration. “To complement the dramatic purples, we chose greens and soft neutrals, like beige and silver tones,” Kate says. To further enhance the atmosphere of timeless romance, Kate and Alex incorporated plenty of unique vintage details. “I grew up in a house full of old, beautiful things, so we used a number of pressed glass pieces to decorate the tables,” Kate explains. Guests left the soiree with smiles on their faces and favors of jasmine and chai teas and potted succulents in hand.

BEFORE THE RING. Suzanne Fraelick and Luke Manely met, as many couples do, by chance at a bar. Out and about in Boston’s Kenmore Square, the two crossed paths and wound up chatting for the entire evening. “Luke was laughing at all my jokes, and the night flew by. I was so giddy that I did not stop talking,” Suzanne remembers. “I began to regret some of my chatter and was unsure if I would hear from him.” Her worries were in vain, as Luke phoned the next day and invited her to go sailing. THE PROPOSAL. During the summer of 2011, Suzanne and Luke were a month into potty-training their new puppy. On the evening of Luke’s proposal, Suzanne was so distracted with the puppy that she didn’t notice the bottle of champagne Luke had chilling on the deck. “After finally making it out onto our deck, Luke asked me to start the grill. When I opened the grill, there was the box set directly in the center,” Suzanne says. “It was private, personal, and completely Luke.” After Suzanne’s enthusiastic “yes,” the couple set out to celebrate in Vermont for the weekend.

THE WEDDING WEEKEND. Originally, Luke and Suzanne had a large summer wedding in the works, but in the end, it just didn’t reflect their personalities. “As we started to fantasize about a small wedding in the snow, the prospect excited us both, so we changed gears,” Suzanne says. The couple’s small guest list allowed for an intimate wedding weekend with those they loved most. The idyllic location was perfect for a fun-filled rehearsal dinner in view of the Presidential Mountains, a morning of spa relaxation, and a cozy Sunday brunch to cap things off.

THE DAY & DESIGN. After a heart-warming fireside ceremony, Suzanne and Luke ushered their guests into a cozy cocktail lounge for appetizers and winter libations. The party adjourned to the resort’s candlelit dining room for an intimate dinner and more celebration. Finally, as the perfect end to a perfect day, the newlyweds and their loved ones gathered around a glowing fire pit to indulge in s’mores by lantern light. Overall, the couple could not have been happier with their winter wedding. “It was such a romantic and special day filled with love and laughter,” Suzanne says.

On an early September morning, Chloe Johnson and Matt Kanner both walked into their new jobs at a local New Hampshire newspaper, completely unaware that they were about to meet the love of their lives. “We worked in different bureaus, but became part of a close group of co-workers before dating about a year later,” Chloe says. “We shared a love of good books, the great outdoors, and, as it turns out, each other.” Soon enough, Chloe moved into Matt’s Portsmouth apartment with her cat and two greyhounds in tow.

After walking from Kittery to Portsmouth, the couple paused to sit for a moment in Prescott Park. Given that the location was a personal favorite of Chloe’s, Matt took advantage of the moment and, on bended knee, asked Chloe to be his for eternity. After Chloe’s enthusiastic acceptance, the pair celebrated with champagne.

THE CEREMONY. Chloe and Matt held their ceremony on the breathtaking grounds of Matt’s parents’ home, Sea Verge. The couple, who used bookmarks as their save-the-dates, gave their heartfelt wedding a distinctly literary theme. Before saying their “I dos,” Matt read a poem by Ogden Nash, who once summered on the property, titled “Tin Wedding Whistle.” Additionally, the ring pillow featured a secret compartment that held a vintage book of poetry. Overall, Chloe and Matt could not have been happier with their smart and sweet ceremony.

THE DAY & DESIGN. With treasured details and a unique library theme, including mock card catalogues to hold place settings, Chloe and Matt’s reception struck the perfect chord between quirky and elegant. “We attempted to create an ambience that was formal enough for our big day and the Victorian house it was centered around, but still had the welcoming, down home feel that we grew up with,” Chloe says about their shared nuptial vision. Tables laden with ivory lace took on a casual edge as canning jars spilling with seasonal blooms sat atop stacks of books, ensuring that Chloe and Matt’s next chapter would be as romantic as the first.

BEFORE THE RING. It wasn’t long after Sarah Wellman started a new job in Washington, D.C., that one of her co-workers started trying to set her up with the dashing and elusive Mark Allegrini. Sarah was apprehensive at first, but her co-worker insisted that Mark’s jaunty curls, New England roots, and love of sailing would charm her. Shortly before Christmas in 2008, after months without a first date, the two crossed paths when meeting up with mutual friends. After sharing drinks and intriguing conversation, the rest was history.

THE PROPOSAL. Two years after their first meeting, Mark and Sarah had just returned home from spending Christmas apart. On the morning of New Year’s Eve, they faced the task of unpacking from the holidays. Mark had gone upstairs to find a box for the holiday decorations and Sarah asked him to grab her slippers. He “couldn’t find them” and asked her to help. “When I reached the top of the stairs, he had a funny look on his face,” Sarah recalls. “He looked at me with wide eyes, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him.”

THE WEDDING WEEKEND. Both natives of New England, Sarah and Mark knew that fall in Maine is one of the most beautiful times of year. They were very excited to share the special season with their friends and family from out of state, many of whom had never been there before. Providing the most authentic Maine experience possible, the weekend featured lobster, fresh blueberries, and locally-brewed beer for their guests. Sarah and Mark included a bevy of beloved games—like bocce and croquet—on the agenda for their big day and ensured that fun was had by all.

THE DAY & DESIGN. Sarah and Mark created a quintessential New England affair that highlighted both the beauty of autumn and their love. Held at Sarah’s father’s golf course and barn, the reception harmoniously blended thrifted treasures, bold, eye-catching blooms, and handcrafted elements—like a lobster cage-turned-card-holder and antique crates filled with homemade jam. With the details coming together just as the couple had envisioned, Mark and Sarah’s wedding lobster bake was nothing short of an enchanting affair.
