Employee healthcare premiums will remain flat for the 7th year in a row and there will be no benefit design changes for the third year in a row. This type of experience is very unusual and does not follow national or local trends with other comparable employers and health plans. This is a testament to City employees who have increasingly engaged in the City’s comprehensive health and wellness program and because of the support and commitment the DER receives from the Mayor, Council members, the labor/management committee and City Wellness Champions. These factors have made a significant difference in the City’s healthcare trend and have limited premium increases over the past seven years.

2018 Health Care Premiums--FLAT FOR 7 YEARS!!

Open Enrollment Reminder The City’s Open Enrollment Period started October 23 and ends November 10, 2017. This is the only time, outside of a qualifying event, that employees can make changes to their benefits for 2018. Please visit one of the seven open enrollment fairs being held around the City and review the new Benefits Guide and Benefits 2018 Website for more information: www.milwaukee.gov/Benefits2018

Wellness Success Stories Do you have or know a City employee that has a wellness success story and wants to share? Send

your stories to [email protected] to possibly be published in future newsletters.

Wellness Success Story

Wellness Committee Members, Lisa Phillips and Natalie AlcarazIn 2004, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) Wellness Committee (WC) was formed to determine if MHD could develop a wellness committee and the mission, vision and direction of the committee. After a year of contacting other city programs, developing the mission and vision and many other details the MHD Wellness Committee was established.

The committee went on hiatus briefly but was reformed and now includes 18 members representing all aspects of the health department including Human Resources, Communication Officer, Health Operations Administrator, members from three of the department’s four divisions and representatives from all four work locations – Zeilder Municipal Building, Northwest Health Center, Southside Health Center and Keenan Health Center. The committee meets monthly to discuss activities, develop lunch and learns and plan many other activities. In addition, the committee works in conjunction with and has representatives on the City’s Labor and Management committee and Wellness Promotion committee to ensure department wellness programming is aligned with the City’s overall health and wellness efforts.

The WC develops a list of 9 to 10 community walks to encourage staff to not only exercise but earn Healthy Rewards points. Many of these walks support the efforts of MHD’s programs such as March of Dimes, American Cancer Society Making

Strides against Breast Cancer, AIDS walk and many others. Each year the committee assists with Public Health Week Volleyball and has two summer beach volleyball events at Bradford Beach.

Remaining Flu Clinic ScheduleThere are two remaining flu clinic dates available. Employees and spouses/partners can go to one of the Workforce Health flu clinics listed below and obtain a flu shot at no charge, regardless of enrollment in the City’s health insurance. To make an appointment, call Workforce Health at 414-777-3410. Walk-ins are welcome, but scheduled appointments will be taken first. Employees and spouses/partners receive 5 Healthy Rewards points for getting a flu shot.

Wednesday, November 8 (1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.)Location: Fire & Police Academy - Chapel

Thursday, November 9 (9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.)Location: City Hall - Room 301-C

MHD Staff in picture from back to front: Jay Romant, Dave Piedt, Neil Rice, Naomi Jenkins, Nancy Burns, Michelle Kinnard, Lisa Phillips, Natalie Alcaraz

Each committee member is a Health Champion and is either a point of contact at their respective job site, a walk team captain, develops lunch and learns at each job site, heads events such as Maintain Don’t Gain which recently had over 60 participants and several additional activities. The committee has seen a marriage between two members and the birth of children.

The MHD WC is proud to be celebrating the ongoing success in 2017 with MHD’s 150th Anniversary and the WC’s eleven active years.

The employee assistance program, or EAP, is a counseling service for City of Milwaukee employees and their families who may be experiencing personal or work place problems. Everyone has problems from time to time. Usually, we work them out. But sometimes problems persist, becoming serious enough to affect us both off and on the job. At such times, an EAP may be able to help. Call Cris Zamora for a confidential consultation at 414-286-3145. Visit the EAP webpage at www.milwaukee.gov/der/EAP for more information on a wide range of work-life topics.

The 4 P’s of Conflict

You’ve found yourself not getting along with someone. To make matters worse, you can’t place your finger on why or how it has gotten to this point. You may feel confused, uncertain, and beside yourself. How do you fix something if you don’t know what needs to be fixed? Interpersonal conflicts may be distilled into four buckets: Preference, Perception, Process and Pressure.

Preference differences may cause conflicts in certain situations. I like to do it this way, you like to do it that way or demand it be done differently and conflict occurs. These conflicts are not intentional but will lead to resentment if not addressed. Yes, we all have our ways of doing things but being flexible when able and appropriate is important. Be open to suggestions and different ways of doing things.

Perception plays into a large percentage of conflicts. Sometimes our motivation and agenda is misinterpreted; other times we assume the worst in others prematurely. Do you feel that the other person has the wrong idea of you or what you were trying to accomplish? Are you jumping to conclusions about others? “I don’t want you to get the wrong impression…I fear that you may have gotten the wrong idea about why I did what I did….I wasn’t trying to upset you on purpose.” Statements like these open the conversation for clarification and reduce misinterpretation.

Process problems are challenging because someone felt hurt, angry or frustrated and either is retaliating or avoiding you. Either intentionally or by accident the other person felt slighted and is now going to hurt you back or is avoiding you altogether. It is easy to get sucked in and hurt or avoid the other person back (tit for tat) but that will only keep the same negative process going. Resist the urge to retaliate and slow the process down, do the opposite of what that knee jerk reaction tells you to do.

Pressure problems happen when we take things personal that weren’t meant to be. If I greet Mary in the morning and she looked away and mumbled under her breath, my initial reaction would be to ask myself what I did to Mary? I had no idea that she was up all night with a sick child, a broken furnace and noisy neighbors. We don’t know what we don’t know. Circling back to Mary later in the day with a statement like, “You seemed upset this morning when I greeted you and I want to check to make sure it wasn’t something I said or did.” If there are external pressures, usually the other person will acknowledge them, “No, it wasn’t you…I just had a tough night.”

Living expenses – From housing and food costs to vacation and recreation expenses, determine your monthly or annual budget. A rule of thumb some professional advisors use is that most people will require 70 to 80 percent of their highest year’s income for each year in retirement.

Health care – The cost of medical coverage continues to increase. Determine how you will keep up, particularly if your health becomes a factor.

Emergencies – In addition to your day-to-day needs, set aside funds for an emergency. Three to six months of expenses in a liquid account is generally recommended.

Long-term savings – Life spans continue to increase. Plan on living longer than you might expect.

Wellness Tip:

How to Care for the Common ColdA common cold, also called an upper respiratory infection (URI), is usually caused by a virus. Symptoms include: cough, runny nose, sore throat, chest congestion, sneezing, nasal congestion, low grade fever. Most common colds last 7 to 10 days, with the worst of the symptoms between days 3 thru 7.

Do I need antibiotics?

Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses. Since the common cold is caused by a virus, antibiotics do not help. Some complications of the common cold could require antibiotics.

What will help me feel better if I get a cold?

• Get plenty of rest• Drink plenty of fluids - aim for 10 glasses of water per day• Use a humidifier or breathe in steam from a hot shower• Medications - ask your primary care provider or local pharmacist to find out which

over-the-counter medications would help ease your symptoms

When should I seek medical attention?

• Fever over 100.4°F• Chest pain, trouble breathing or coughing up blood (these symptoms can be

emergencies, seek medical attention immediately)• Severe pain of any kind• No improvement after 10 days• Have a chronic disease such as asthma, or a weakened immune system
