“The bitter end” by Matthew Street, The Vicar, based on Ephesians 4:31-32 and He-brews 12:15

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, temper, backbiting and insults, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God in Christ has forgiven you. Be vigilant, in case anyone should fail to grasp the grace of God, ensuring that no root of bitterness springs up to spread unrest among you, through which many may be brought to ruin.” (Ephesians 4:31-32 and Hebrews 12:15)

Few of us in our lifetime will be fortunate enough to escape being badly let down or hurt by someone. A close relationship may end in acrimony, a trusted friend betray a confidence, a broken promise deny us a long-dreamed of opportunity, or a mo-ment’s carelessness wreck our lives.

How do we cope with such experiences? There are two options: either we face them for what they are, working through the pain until we finally come to terms with it, or we can dwell on the injustice of life, licking our wounds and wallowing in self-pity. The latter reaction perfectly understandable but ultimately tragic, for it succeeds in adding insult to injury, robbing life of its joy and beauty. Few people are lonelier than those who are bitter in spirit. Get rid of your bitterness, then, through bring-ing it openly and honestly to God, before bitterness has the chance, metaphorically speaking, to get rid of you.

Lunch clubAfter approximately 28 years of the Lunch Club in Wellow Village Hall, the cooks have reluctantly decided that the time has come to hang up our aprons!

Between us we have clocked up well over 100 years! It would be fantastic if another group of cooks would take on the job of providing a monthly lunch and we would be pleased to explain what’s involved. Our finishing date isn’t definite yet but sometime in 2020 is most likely.

We feel sorry as well as relieved with our decision. We will miss everyone but realise we can’t go on forever Hopefully another group will step up to the challenge.

Please contact any of the cooks if would like any information about the Lunch Club. Janet: Tel: 835254; Lee: Tel: 837858; Marian: Tel: 832561

The October Lunch is on Thursday 24th at 1p.m in the Village Hall.

Please let one of us know if you are unable to be there.

Thank you,

Janet Martin (835254)

Wellow Parish Council – A précis of the draft minutes

The Parish Council meeting took place at 7.30pm on Monday 2nd September with apologies received from Cllr. Stuart Kotchie.

7 members of the public were in attendance including District Cllr. Neil Butters. The Chairman introduced the new Clerk, Jenny Howell.

Public Participation: A resident spoke about a number of locations around the parish where trees were reported to be overhanging. A Cllr. volunteered to look into these and report back.

Planning: Members were asked to consider two planning applications:19/03428/FUL and 19/34289 Church Farm Buildings: Erection of new livestock barn. A Cllr. provided a report to introduce and summarise the two applications. Discus-sion took place which included: size, location / position, access, proximity to other buildings, materials proposed and planting scheme. The Parish Council supported planning application 19/03428/FUL and 19/34289 Church Farm Buildings, Erec-tion of new livestock barn. The lead Cllr. for Planning will submit the response to BANES Council.

Highways and Transport: The Chairman reported that the white lines applied out-side Hungerford Terrace had faded. BANES Council have confirmed that the white lines will be repainted and have been added to the schedule of works (no date sup-plied at present).

Village Hall: The Chairman advised that the insurance claim relating to the storm drainpipe damage had been settled and that the Parish Council have now received the money from the insurance. An excess of £250 was paid by the Parish Council at the time. The Chairman confirmed that in the spirit of good will, the excess will be split between the Village Hall Committee and Parish Council. Members gave thanks to Cllrs. Kotchie and Caudle for all of their efforts.

Play Park: A Cllr. advised that three tenders have been received for the Play Park. There may be an element of work to revise down requirements due to the initial quotes received. A tender report and recommendations will be made by the Play-ground Team to the Parish Council. Feedback / questions are invited prior to the October meeting.

Climate Change: The Parish Council discussed and considered the draft Wellow Carbon Reduction Pathway document and also noted the Bristol Airport Expan-sion document in the Mendip Times. Cllr. Trafford will circulate PCAA informa-tion on Bristol Airport. Members also debated whether the Parish Council should

declare a climate emergency. A proposal to declare a Climate Emergency was not supported by a majority at the meeting. The Parish Council voted in support of the Wellow Carbon Reduction Pathway Document. Cllr. Trafford (the lead Cllr for Cli-mate Change) will provide regular updates.

Information: The padlock to a new storage container owned by the Wellow Horti-cultural Society had been super-glued for the second time. It had now been replaced and the PC hoped the matter was now ended. It was suggested that should this recur it would be reported to the police as criminal damage.

Miscellaneous: Paint for telephone kiosk to be provided.

A resident spoke about earth and soil deposited on a grave after a recent burial. The Vice Chairman apologised for the distress this had caused and arranged for this to be removed. A Cllr. suggested a visit to the cemetery.

Wellow Horticultural SocietyWell – it is hard to believe that the Wellow and District Horticultural Society has just staged its 70th successful Flower show and has only missed one year. By my reckon-ing that means it started about 1948! As usual we have the “what could we do better next year” and the “what went really well” discussions. What do you all think? We like to hear your views so bring them to the AGM and share them. We have put lots of photos from the day on the website so use the link to see if you are there! Thanks to Jane. http://hortsoc.wellow.org/index.php/flower-show-2019-photos/

I am told by one who is good at this type of thing (thanks, Rob) that the entries over-all were about the same, 663 this year and 659 last year, but that the entries across the horticultural classes were up, which is good news. Not so good is that 60% of horticultural entries come from just 8 people. In fact the same 8 as put in a similar percentage last year. So what’s the matter with the rest of the village? Time to give them a bit of competition I think.

The number of people who came to the show was down about 50, possibly due to the downpour that occurred about 1 p.m. Anyway, congratulations to the prizewin-ners below.

So what of the future? Will the show manage another 70 years? I do have serious concerns that not enough younger people are coming forward to take part in the organising of it. Don’t worry, we are not expecting anyone to take it on for next year. It is a learning curve. I served several years apprenticeship under the expert guidance of Shirley Betts and Lisa Layzell before I was let loose on it! They were excellent teachers.

WELLOW APPLE JUICING DAY

Bring bottles to take the juice away. Bring the kids to help.

Or just come and taste local apple juice.

Put the date in your diary now – more details to follow

Our juicing day is a little later than in previous years. If you have loads of apples that need juicing before then, and you can collect them into containers, we can arrange for them to be juiced (for

making cider) and/or pasteurised. There will be a small cost!

We need people to come forward and learn how it all works and bring some new ideas at the same time, otherwise we will not make our centenary!

Anyway, enough of that. It just remains to say a huge THANK YOU to all those who helped. We can now relax a bit for a few months until it all starts again……

See you at the AGM, to be held on Thursday 21st November in the Village Hall.

Bridget and the Committee

Wellow Composting ClubAs you begin to clear your garden, and as the leaves begin to fall, please bring your organic material to the community compost in Station Road Car Park.

Please only deliver : non-invasive weeds, small cuttings, grass cuttings, and leaves. Please don’t put them in the bins; put them in the “delivery” area; and it would be helpful if you could separate items on delivery.

Why not join the compost club, and save the cost of the green bin? Would current and potential members contact Clover Holland (833348) for further information, please. On roughly three occasions per year, we need help in sifting and bagging the new compost in the centre bin. It’s fun, and the more volunteers we get, the quicker it takes to complete.

The next bagging day is Sunday 27th October – please put that date in your diary! Starts at 10 a.m. Bags can be purchased from us for £1. Please contact Andy on 834834 if you would like to help.

Wellow GrowingWe are a group of people who want to grow more food, locally, in and around Wel-low. To do this we need more people, skills, experience, land and resources.

We will soon be making plans for the 2020 growing season, starting with the seeds.

We have all heard about the plastic problem, the looming mass extinction of species, and the catastrophic impacts of climate change if we continue as we have been. By growing food locally we help mitigate all three of these issues. Join us.

We also grow flowers – food for the heart! (and the bees)

Contact me if you would like to be added to the email distribution list, so you get warning of our next events, and/or if you would like more information.
