Wellness Warehouse own brand range of teas are sourced from the best suppliers possible and are all certified organic.

range of organic teas

TRY THIS: • Make a delicious iced tea by brewing any of the varieties as you normally

would. Add a sweetener like honey, xylitol or stevia. Allow it to cool and store in a glass bottle in the fridge.

• Use organic herbal tea as a basis for salad dressing or marinade. Make a stronger dilution by boiling it on the stove until it distils to the flavour you want.

• Use teas to flavour cooking by replacing the water component with tea. Try this in scones or bread, rice dishes or stews.

• If you want to cut down on milk, try using Rooibos tea in your cereal or porridge as a replacement. Remember to sweeten it first before pouring.

WELLNESS ORGANIC TEAS RANGE:

We have sourced the best ingredients to bring you tea of the highest quality with great flavours to match. Our range of organic teas include Rooibos & Buchu; Ginger & Lemongrass; and plain Rooibos. Winter is the perfect time to make your home into a comfortable and safe sanctuary you love to hang out in. Trend predictor Faith Popcorn was right on the button with her book ‘Cocooning,’ where she forecast an upward trend of spending more time at home. Think about it; internet allows us to work from home; big screens, DSTV and box office offer home entertainment; while gym equipment and exercise DVD’s means we can even work-out at home. Then there is online shopping with home delivery options. Cooking is another trend hitting the high spot that fuels home entertaining. Beautiful looking and highly functional kitchen appliances have become the new

items to covet, from the props needed to make sushi or pasta to everything home-made like bread, preserves, even dehydrated fruit and flour milling. Home entertainers are taking food preparation to new limits. From the kitchen we move to the bathroom where we see an upsurge in home Spa treatments. Bathing, showering and shaving is made more luxurious with heavenly smelling oils, treatments and body scrubs. It makes sense that another trend on the rise is to create more beautiful surroundings to enhance all this time spent at home. Community projects with humorous, quirky, whimsical and simply gorgeous hand-crafted items are providing us with cushions, throws, mats, décor items and even chandeliers to enhance our home decorating ventures. Making your home into a sanctuary is a rewarding project destined to enhance your living experience. I wish you a wonderful month of June with a great Father’s Day celebration. Remember that winter weather makes you more vulnerable to flu so take preventative supplements to strengthen your immunity (see our suggestions on page 15). Keep warm and happy cocooning.

Myths aside, tea originally came from a plant native to Central and Eastern Asia. From around the mid fourteenth century, it was served ceremoniously by priests, and then taken up by wealthy tradesmen who brought it to their clients where it eventually spread to Europe and the colonies.

In earlier days tea was used as an antidote to the effects of alcohol, as a stimulant for meditation and prayer evenings, and as a gift for priests and emperors. It has also been used in healing. Elaborate ceremonies long practiced in the East are still conducted today.

In Buddhist tradition a separate room is specifically used for symbolic ceremony that represents a humbling retreat from the world. Traditionally this room would be barren making it conducive to thoughtful contemplation. Tea is served ritualistically by a tea master. The tea ceremony serves to purify the mind and allow a feeling of oneness with nature.

Japanese tea culture takes preparation, etiquette and formalities to the extreme. It is believed that to know and understand the tea ceremony is to be at one with Japanese culture and sensibilities. Intricacies surrounding flower placement, etiquette, décor, methods, preparation and, serving are acted out with exact precision.

Although tea was widely consumed as a staple in Asian culture, it made a huge economic impact after Lu Yu produced Ch'a Ching. Yu lived during the Tang Dynasty (618-901) and is famed as the foremost important person in the development and promotion of tea culture. His Ch’a

Ching was a somewhat poetic manual walking producers through correct growing methods, cultivation, manufacturing and drying and providing instruction in correct preparation. This fuelled a runaway industry that led to tea being a household tradition. The Ch'a Ching elevates the preparation and drinking of tea to an almost religious affair with set rituals, using implements imbued with significance, and advising on the appropriate state of mind required for the tea drinker.

Taoism was a key feature of Chinese culture in the eighth century. With Taoist influence there was the belief that every detail of life was an act of living worthy of celebration. It emphasised the beauty found in everything and used tea as a marker to recognize tranquility and harmony.

Tea became popular in England in the seventeenth century when Queen Elizabeth developed a penchant for exotic luxury goods from the East. She founded the East India Company to go on trading journeys and tea started trickling in. Trading taxes and penalties were ignored while rogue importers started landing more tea, contraband increasing the appeal. At the same time tea spread to the colonies and to America. By the twentieth century tea houses were popping up in high level hotels and formed popular meeting places.

It is comforting, celebratory, ice-breaking and sometimes even a

diversion for awkward moments. It represents time out or time together.

Both East Asia and India have stories claiming the origin of tea but stories that are more mythological than factual. Chinese legend has it that Emperor Shen Nong insisted his subjects boil water before drinking it. Leaves from a nearby tree fell into the pot and gave the water a distinctive aroma that prompted the emperor to sample it. After drinking it he immediately felt rejuvenated. Hearsay dates this occurrence over two thousand years BC. Another chronicle follows Siddhartha,

the founder of Buddhism on a journey to China where he undertook not to sleep during his travels. Days later he couldn’t hold out and fell asleep. So disappointed with himself he cut his eyelids off and threw them to the ground. They buried into the soil and immediately sprouted a tea bush. After chewing the leaves he instantly felt energised.

Tea has a long history of romance. Its exotic beginnings are marked with spiritual, medicinal and meditational purpose. Besides numerous health benefits tea is a soothing ritual with universal appeal.

did you know?Ichigo-ichie is a Japanese proverb linked with famous tea master Sen no Rikyu. It reminds us that every meeting is unique and offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance that might never happen again.

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT CUP OF TEA:

Making the perfect cup of tea involves a secret ingredient – patience, claims a new study.

Brew masters have discovered the key to the best tasting brew is to let it sit for six minutes before drinking. Not only does it avoid scalding but

by then has cooled to 60°C, the optimum temperature to let the

flavours infuse. But leave it until after 17 minutes and the tea will be past

its best.

TEA CLASSIFICATION

Tea is classified according to how the leaves are processed. Different levels of oxidation determine the colour, body and flavour. Some teas are fermented, some semi-fermented and others like green tea are unfermented. Tea plants are temperamental and affected by soil, height above sea level and climate.

There are three basic types of tea: black, green and oolong. Herbal teas are classified separately and come from flower, bark, peels, grasses, berries, leaves and often flavoured from a variety of plants

BLACK TEA: This is the tea we are most familiar with. Leaves are left to wither, then rolled, sifted and fermented ending with a full flavour and rich amber colour. Black teas include Orange Pekoe, English Breakfast and Darjeeling.

GREEN TEA:To produce green teas, the leaves are fired shortly after harvesting to prevent fermentation, yielding a greenish gold color and a delicate taste. Recent studies have shown this tea can help reduce the risk of cancer.

OOLONG TEA:With oolong teas, the leaves are dried, rolled, twisted, and semi-fermented, producing a colour and flavor between that of black and green tea.

Just the smell of home baking is enough to bring on warm fuzzy feelings. The Wellness Warehouse chocolate brownie mix makes it so easy to bake your own. Mix it all together and in no time you will be sampling the perfect prop for your tea party.

Use Ghee instead of butter. Ghee is clarified butter that has the same beneficial qualities but without the impurities. Ghee can be stored without refrigerating if sealed and moisture free. It is has a somewhat sacred reputation and considered food for the Devas. Ghee is good for frying as its smoke point is 250 °C which is well above standard cooking temperatures.

If you can’t resist adding a sweetener, don’t feel guilty, just do it the healthy way. Stevia is a natural sweetener taken from the leaf of a plant native to South America. It has practically no calories and no spike effect on blood sugar.

Now you can get extra flavour by using loose leaf tea combined with this elegant tea pot. It traps the leaf and frees the flavour. This is an especially amazing option if you are drinking a flower tea. The glass container allows you to see the flower unfold.

Whatever the setting, from cucumber sandwiches at the Ritz where tea is served in bone china cups to a flask with sandwiches in a brown paper bag, tea is enjoyed by all.

Drink any of the black or green varieties or go for herbal. Take it black or add milk and a sweetener from sugar to honey or stevia. Lemon slices, ginger or cinnamon and vanilla are also good accompaniments. Take time out to enjoy the ritual of a great cup of tea. Go a step further and fashion your own tea room in a garden pagoda setting or set up a long table and invite lots of guests. Tradition believes a walk through the garden creates the right mindset for a tranquil tea drinking experience.

Wellness Warehouse has a selection of teas to suit anyone’s taste. If you think herbal tea is for health only, sample some of these teas and get hooked. Don’t forget herbal teas can make a fabulous base for salad dressing, sauces and marinade.

LISTEN TO THE PAIN One of the only ways the body has to communicate with us is through pain. Pain is an indication we need to pay special attention, to not only listen but do something. If your body is hurting, something is wrong. It could be signaling a lifestyle change: exercise, vitamins, a different diet or less stress. Disease, pain or illness is often a conversation you need to have with yourself. Be intuitive when listening, you probably know what your body is calling for.

BE MINDFUL Having respect for your body means being selective what you expose it to. Chemicals and electro-magnetic charges have a cumulative effect, be mindful of toxic household cleaners, chlorinated pools, preservatives and allergies. If you are easily affected by your environment, don’t move close to an electrical power station or noisy highway. Mindfulness also extends to unprotected sex, be mindful of what you do with your body.

GO SLOWSlow is definitely the new way to go. Slow food has reached trend status, being touted as a much healthier than its fast food counterpart. We even have a new ‘slow’ rating for towns that live with more home industry and eco focus. Wind down the amount of activities, distractions and things you do and are involved with. This will makes life more simple, manageable and enjoyable. Paradoxically, people doing things slowly find they actually have more time.

SQUAT Sitting in a chair is not the best postural stance to prevent back-aches and improve posture. A much healthier relaxation pose is to squat. A simple squatting pose will lengthen your spine and help relieve back strain. It is a brilliant way to improve flexibility in the hips and legs. It helps lengthen and strengthen leg muscles. Although it might feel difficult initially, start off doing it for a few minutes a day until your body gets squatting fit. This is also the best position to evacuate the bowels. It prevents pushing and straining and provides an easy passage for complete elimination – people who have a custom of squatting have noticeably fewer colon problems.

BELLY BREATHING Breathing affects your entire body and also informs your brain. When your mind speeds up, your breath follows sending danger signals to your mind. Calm and deepen your breathing to reverse this effect. Breathe in all the way to your belly to maximise the amount of oxygen you bring in. Breathe out for longer than your in breath to remove old and stagnant carbon dioxide from the bottom of your lungs. It will also remove toxicity. Spend some time concentrating on your breathing for extra effect.

DAILY OIL MASSAGE Having a daily full-body massage before you shower every day has more than one benefit. It soothes the nervous system, boosting circulation and helping remove toxins from the body. It also allows you to strengthen the connection with your body. Giving each limb and body part your attention daily creates more body acceptance. It is also excellent for the skin. Use sesame oil heated slightly over the stove. It only takes ten minutes. Start from the head with circular movements, use both hands at once move down to the neck then throat and shoulders. Do each arm and hand. Go gently on the chest and stomach but use long strokes for the limbs. When reaching the abdomen use a slow circular clockwise movement. Leave the oil on for as long as you can (up to 30minutes) before showering.

REST Rest is regenerative. It goes without saying that quality sleep is essential and restorative but we can also practice periods of rest during the day or while we are active. This entails getting yourself to a complete state of relaxation and need only take five minutes. It can be done while walking from the car park to work or during a lunch break. Practice releasing every feeling of stress in your body. A great place to start is with the face. Start with your brow area, consciously release the tension from between your eyes, move down to your cheeks, your jaw and mouth. As you release the muscles you will be surprised to notice how much tension you are holding. Doing this regularly will enhance proficiency and soon you will be able to relax quickly and efficiently. Your body will remember the relaxation and will allow you to be much less stressed throughout the day.

12 everything you need to live life well

Busyness and distractions can keep us from noticing our bodies.

Whether a small nagging pain, an overdue check-up, failing eyesight, a habit of not flossing, an exercise injury or an unattended medical condition, we aren’t always as attentive as we should be. Yet, our flesh, bones, muscles, organs and systems should be given the highest regard. As they say, the body is the only place we have to live. Wake up a new respect for your body and the role it plays in your life. Start to listen to it daily and pay more attention.

We look at a few practices to help make a better connection with the body.

CREATING YOUR INNER

SANCTUM By Glenn-Douglas Haig

Wellness Warehouse Life Coach

Imagine how much energy and vitality you would have if you were truly able to recharge your mental batteries three times a day…

We are all tackling our lives on a daily basis – sometimes feeling strong and confident and sometimes not. You might agree: when we are feeling physically tired, it’s easier to take a quick rest and recharge our bodies, than it is to recharge our minds and emotions.

You know that feeling, when you just couldn’t be bothered, your energy levels are low, and you don’t give a rat’s ass. That is a result of mental and emotional fatigue, often caused by stress. That’s when we become Mr. Grumpy or Miss. Snappy. It’s not a pleasant experience for us or for our loved ones.

When next you feel like this, I invite you to take 5 minutes to close your eyes, breathe deeply and focus on your belly button. (Yes, contemplating your navel has its rewards!) Imagine, just like an umbilical chord, that you are connected to the Source of all life via your belly button, and you are now downloading pure, vibrant, light-filled life energy into your body. Allow the weight of your thoughts to sink down into your belly and give them over to Life. Imagine all your cares being vacuumed out of you by this chord, and being replaced with divine Life force. Give your body at least three minutes to let go and receive.

Your emotional centre resides in your belly, or gut – and this simple exercise gives your mind permission to climb off the mental mouse wheel, while clearing and energizing your emotional core. Do not be misled by the simplicity of this exercise – you will be astonished by its power - the power of accessing your inner sanctum. We are all blessed with this inner space of tranquility and rejuvenation, it is a vital coping mechanism and forms part of our wholeness - we just forget to use it.

"Your body is precious. It is your vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care.”

~Buddha

With all the health advice out there, we generally know the changes we should be making. We can probably list at least ten things we should be doing. Sometimes there are so many, it becomes overwhelming and we don’t get around to doing any of them. Experts advise making one change at a time. Give yourself a break and do one manageable and achievable thing at a time. Focus on taking a daily multivitamin and drinking two glasses of water in the morning. Deep peace and tranquility can be reached through a period of

solitude, believes author Kent Nerburn. Not just minutes and hours but days or weeks, is a good practice to this end. Nerburn points out that we often design our lives around a series of tasks that sometimes leave us breathless, with a sense of work undone. Often we mistake this activity for meaning. Shutting off activities, people, tasks and superficial affairs will quickly show you whether or not you are at peace with yourself.

Robert Kull author of Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes points out that

solitude offers an opportunity to explore the sense of alienation many of us live with and to realize that being alone is not the same as feeling isolated or lonely. After spending months alone in the Wilderness and exploring the length and breadth of solitude, Kull says “I've learned that the core of my loneliness is not separation from other people, but feeling disconnected from myself. Solitude provides a respite from the demands of social life and creates a space for personal healing.”

"Solitude provides a respite from the demands of social life and creates a

space for personal healing."

Simply Green is South Africa's premier bi-monthly green lifestyle magazine, providing positive and practical steps to cleaner living for people who want to make a difference but don't want to compromise on lifestyle.

Finding natural ways to take care of ourselves, and particularly focusing on Mother Earth, we see how important it is for us to preserve her natural resources. Filled with the most spectacular, awe-inspiring, natural healing commodities to help with relaxation, bring calm to ones busy life and deep healing for the body, mind and soul, we take a look at earth-friendly, natural options available to us.

Natural Hot Springs:Hot springs have been known for many centuries for their healing properties. The heat and subsequent sweating have deeply cleansing effects on our skin and entire body/mind system and the deep mineral-rich content of the water offers unique benefits.

Organic, Volcanic Ash:Volcanic ash has been used for centuries by the native Melanesians and Polynesians for the treatment of a wide variety of infections. Ash has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-yeast and general disinfectant qualities. It is also high in sulphur, an active mineral ingredient that not only helps the body to resist bacteria but actually destroys it.

Waterfalls:Visiting waterfalls or ‘waterfalling’ as it has been coined, is known to help lift our spirits and bring a calming effect that only nature can create. The dramatic, thunderous falls can have a serious impact on the psyche, allowing us to feel alive, more vibrant and in touch with our body/mind/soul.

Strangely enough, if you are feeling lonely, he says, “spending time alone can soften our sense of alienation from others”. Healer Glenda Helva recommends the practice of cultivating a healthy ‘alone’ space, giving shape and form to this space and storing it visually. This space offers a sanctuary for the mind to visit anytime it needs. She calls it ‘a kind of holiday house for the spirit’. Nerburn recommends listening to the ‘hum of the universe.’ This sacred noise emitted by earth will help you emerge into a place where you are able to be alone and at peace.

CREATURE COMFORTS

Small daily creature comforts go a long way in making your home into a sanctuary. Surround yourself with things you love. Go for natural fibres and handmade products. Home crafted items carry the energy of love and individual attention. Too much technology, unnatural and non-biodegradable products set up ions that affect you negatively. Make your kitchen cosy and inviting with some home grown edibles like sprouts or herbs, put grains in bottles where you can see them. Making food visible is reassuring and comforting. Add soft fabrics in the form of throws and cushions to your living area.If coffee is your chosen fix, drink only one cup a day and make it the best organic variety you can find. Flowers are also an essential indulgence bringing life and beauty into the home.

GREEN LIVINGSold On Hemp By Marce du Toit

A new range of clothing in our Green Living shop made from hemp has elicited a whole lot of mixed reactions. Some shoppers ask if they are in danger of getting high, while others enquire as to whether it is banned. Never before has a plant been at the centre of such attention, confusion, wonderment, distrust and fascination by people the world over as cannabis. Cannabis is a genus of flowering plant consisting of various strains, but can be effectively divided into two for my explanation; THC-containing strains (high concentrations of THC can be psychoactive) and NON-THC containing strains (or more accurately low concentrations, less than 0.3 as per wiki) THC is one of the psychoactive ingredients in cannabis. Therefore, NON-THC containing strains are referred to as ‘industrial hemp’. Hemp is considered one of the world’s most sustainable crops. Every part of the plant is used; the outer stalk for textile fibres, the inner stalk for building materials and cellulose, the seed kernel for nutritional oils, the seed husk for biodegradable plastics and the leaves for re-tilling and fertilizing the soil after harvest. Its 50,000 recorded uses range from building materials; nutritional oils and foods rich in Essential Fatty Acids and protein; fuel; fabrics; paper and composite automobile panels to name but a few. An acre field of hemp can yield up to 8 dry tons of fiber, that’s about 3 times more than cotton. The same crop will also give 4 times more paper than an acre of forest trees. Hemp is naturally pest resistant and can easily be grown organically. South Africa has the ideal climate to cultivate hemp; the plant is quick growing (it grows in about 3-4 months), a fraction of the time it takes for a normal tree to reach cultivation height. Currently, farming hemp in South Africa is illegal. In my opinion this is largely due to a lack of understanding and education and an ‘emotion-over-reason’ attitude towards this miracle plant. There is a strong movement pushing for government to support hemp farming. Socioeconomic reasons aside (jobs, housing, clothing, medicine and money), there are environmental benefits as well. By using more hemp we can slowly begin to lessen our dependence on forest-based products and start building a better, brighter and greener future for generations to come.

KNITTING CIRCLE

CANDLE POWER THROW IT ON

Beautiful and stylish bath mats and pouffes are hand knitted from 100% cotton. At the ages of 82 and 77, Rose Barnardo and Connie Titus have been leaders in their community for years and are leading a team of knitters with love and wisdom. Tiny pieces of t-shirt material are cut into strips, knotted and then knitted into these beautiful products.

The quickest way to create a cozy warming atmosphere is to light candles. Candle light is romantic, makes everyone look good and is also eco friendly, even more so when the candles are made from soy and re-useable bamboo pillars. Choose from vanilla, orange blossom, lemongrass, citronella and even chestnut and banana.

Treat yourself this winter with a cotton throw from the Natural Company. Natural colours are versatile enough to blend into most colour schemes. Throws are made from natural cotton, with a vintage, tassled edge and will transform your bedroom or living room into an inviting sanctuary.

Often athletes talk about being in ‘the zone’ - a moment when time

seems to stand still and the world around disappears. They feel their heart beat pulse and breath becomes a focus. They are completely in the moment, in the zone, in the ‘now’. A clear mind and connection to the body and soul feels like a moving meditation… it feels alive!

Not all forms of meditation are done sitting still, with legs crossed, in complete silence.Moving meditation is about finding focus and stilling the mind with gentle movements and breathing techniques. Movement creates chemical and emotional shifts in the mind and body allowing us to clear mind clutter and reconnect more deeply to the

spirit or essence and increase endorphins and happy hormones.

Meditation doesn’t need to be daunting or mysterious as perception has it. All it requires, is focusing the mind on one thing, being fully conscious and present and letting go of thoughts. During this time, all the worries and the problems of the world disappear. When the mind is fully concentrated, time passes unnoticed, as if it does not exist.

There is no right or wrong way to meditate—it’s just about bringing your mind to a single point of concentration. When focusing on one thing or one action we are doing a form of meditation. Even playing golf qualifies as there is incredible focus and you must be ‘tuned in’ while playing. You can be meditating while running, swimming, or surfing, even doing housework. When you are completely in the moment, present and concentrating on what you are doing, you are doing a form of meditation.

An effective method is to bring your attention to your breath while doing slow, repetitive movements. This makes it much easier to clear your mind and find one point of focus.

FIND YOUR ZEN Engage in a silent moving meditation walk in a beautiful nature space by adding focused breathing and attention. The aim is to become aware of the breath as it enters and leaves your body by concentrating on the rise and fall of your abdomen or the sensations of the breath passing through your lips or nostrils. With the inhalation and exhalation of each breath count one, two, three, four… Start paying attention to each and every movement you make. As you begin to move synchronize your breathe with your movement. As you step forward with your right foot, breathe in, and then breathe out as you step forward slowly with your left foot. Move with complete focus and clarity. If you become distracted just return to the breath. When the sensation of quiet, stillness and peace start happening, hold them as best you can and experience them as fully as possible.

You often see them in shopping malls, supermarkets or at kid’s

parties, highly active, most often screaming and out-of-control kids. What do those places have in common? Noise pollution, lots of people and access to artificial colourants, refined carbohydrates and sweets. All of these are stimulants that can trigger children prone to hyperactivity. Commonly accepted components of the average diet and living environment can exacerbate a child’s tendency to react to too much stimuli - by making them hyperactive.

Christopher Hobbs, a fourth generation herbalist and botanist and founder of the Institute for Natural Products Research,

has identified common factors that add to hyperactive tendencies. These are:

Emotional/Relationship Issues:• Lack of physical touching, expressions

of caring and love• Not emotionally connecting with

children often - sharing activities and interests

• Not helping children to channel their energy in positive ways

Diet:• Refined sugar products (soft drinks,

sweets, dried fruits, pasteurised fruit juice)

• Processed foods with food additives, artificial colouring

• Food allergens (the most common

are pasteurised dairy products, eggs, wheat, tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes)

Environmental Factors:• Heavy metal contamination (like lead

from house paint or mercury from fillings)

• Artificial lighting• Strong electro-magnetic fields• Noise pollution

Allow little people an area where they can play.

Hyperactive children can seem difficult to deal with but lifestyle adjustments and targeted activities can minimize hyperactivity. Leila Fanner offers some guidelines and creative ways to calm hyperactivity in children.

fitness, sleep & massage

25wellnesswarehouse.com

movewellImprove eating habits Most mom’s of hyperactive children are aware of dietary no-no’s for their little ones. The sheer scale of things to avoid can be disheartening but over the years I have discovered some wonderfully systemically calming foods we can say ‘yes’ to:

• Chia and Linseeds: for their high Omega 3-6-9 oils that balance moods and promote healthy brain functions.

• Green smoothies: our all-time favourite. Fruit, spinach and other greens blended together make a highly nutritious and delicious meal replacement for busy days (you don’t taste the spinach). Fruit like bananas, berries, apples and pears provides a healthy natural sweetener and fibre while spinach adds mineral salts, iron and phosphorous that balances blood sugar levels. This keeps kids from craving refined carbs.

• Sesame seeds or Tahini: very high in calcium (higher than milk). Good for healthy skin, bones and teeth. A lack of calcium can cause irritability, moodiness, tearfulness and trouble sleeping. I add a tablespoon to my fruit smoothies.

Play awareness games My mother played this game with us as kids and my son loves it. We take turns being blindfolded while the other person brings a collection of things to touch, smell, hear or feel. The blindfolded person has to guess what each thing is. Imagine the laughter when feeling squishy jelly or cold worm shaped pasta. Hyperactive children often enjoy being the blindfolded one as it cuts out excessive stimulation and they can focus on one sense at a time – instead of coping with an onslaught that agitates them.

Make discipline fun Over-stimulated kids respond well to creativity that requires concentration to achieve something of their own making. Play games that get things done at the same time. A game I play with my son gets him cleaning his room with record speed, it’s called The Wall-e (after the movie): Most boys love robots. So we made up a game where he is the robot and I ‘programme’ him to find all the red/blue or green things in the room. We move through the colours and/or shapes one by one and in no time he has piles of things in their boxes and storage places.

Choose the right school Hyperactive children often don’t fare well in mainstream schooling, or where they are forced to sit still for long periods. . Investigate alternative systems like Montessori or Waldorf that allow more individual expression in class. A less restricted environment accommodates a restless, often quick and adaptive learner.

Use nature If weather permits, allow little people to have an area where they can play with mud, climb trees and observe insects and birds. Nature has a wonderfully calming effect on adults and children alike. In today’s electronically driven world, children have very little encouragement to be outside.

products that are absolute essentials. Here is a list of 12 beauty basics no woman should ever be without:

FACE

Gentle cleanser: Cleansing your skin helps get rid of excess makeup, sunblock and dirt or oils. Find a good cleanser suited to your skin type and use it morning and night. Soap-free, cream cleansers are often better for dry or sensitive skin and gel cleansers tend to be better for oily skin.

Exfoliator: Using a facial exfoliator at least once a week will help remove dead skin cells and leave your skin smoother, softer and brighter.

Face mask: A weekly or twice monthly face mask is a healing, rejuvenating ritual for your skin. For oily skin, a mud-based mask can help soak up extra oils, and for dry skin, an intense hydrating mask can soothe and nourish.

Daily moisturizer with SPF: It is important that you apply moisturizer every day. This will not only help protect your skin from dryness, but it will also nourish and protect it from free radicals in the environment. To get the best results, make sure you use one made for your skin type. Preferably find a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 15, or use a sun block before applying your daytime moisturiser.

Gentle make-up remover: Since going to bed with makeup up on is a big beauty no-no, finding an effective makeup remover is a must for any woman. Coconut oil and plain aqueous cream both work well for removing makeup and are gentle enough to use on eyes too. If you are too tired to properly remove makeup and clean your face after a big night, use makeup wipes as a quick solution.

Tea Tree oil: This natural oil has been proven to help heal skin blemishes, so it’s very handy for skin prone to breakouts. It can also be used as an antiseptic on cuts or bites. Also, adding a little tea tree oil to your shampoo makes an effective home remedy for dandruff or itchy scalp.

BODY

Broad spectrum sunscreen: Regardless of the season, the sun’s rays can be highly damaging and cause wrinkles, fine lines and increase the risk of skin cancer. Before spending time outdoors, it is vital to use sun screen to protect you against harmful UV and UVB rays.

Body scrub or brush: Using a body scrub or body brush will help remove dead skin cells, smooth rough skin and boost circulation. Use a body scrub at least once a week. If you have sensitive skin, go for a gentle one. (DIY note: You can make your own scrub by mixing sugar and coconut oil together)

Body moisturiser: After showering or bathing use an all over cream, lotion or oil to soothe dry skin, protect sensitive skin and help improve the overall appearance of your skin.

A signature scent: Whether a perfume or a body spritzer, finding a scent you love wearing will uplift your spirits and boost your confidence. Don’t over use but find a fragrance that lasts.

HAIR

Shampoo & conditioner: No matter what type of hair you have, it’s a good idea to use both a shampoo and conditioner. While shampoo is mainly used to clean hair of oils and dirt, conditioner helps keep hair hydrated and silky. Be sure to choose a shampoo and conditioner that matches your hair type.

Hair treatment: A hair mask or treatment weekly or bi-monthly will help by deeply moisturizing your hair and will assist with recovery from environmental elements and constant heat styling.

MUST-HAVE GROOMING TOOLS: Tweezers: Your eyebrows frame your face, so keeping them well groomed can make a big difference to your appearance. Even if you wax, tweezers are great for maintaining your brows between salon visits.

Earbuds: Besides being useful for cleaning out your ears, earbuds are also good for blending eye make-up, smoothing out eyeliner and applying tea tree oil to spots.

Cotton wool pads/balls:Use these for removing makeup, nail polish and face masks (always buy organic cotton when possible.)

Nail clippers and file: The easiest way to keep your nails trimmed, shaped and tidy.

A good toothbrush: Having sparkling clean teeth is essential to help you to look your best. You can also use an old or clean toothbrush as an eyebrow brush.

Razor or wax strips: Ensure your legs and underarms are smooth and fuzz-free by always having a hair removal tool at your disposal.

DISCOVER A PROFESSIONAL CAREER IN

REFLEXOLOGY Reflexology works on the basis that all organs and systems within the body are connected via energy channels known as meridians and are mirrored through reflex areas on the feet. Using specific finger pressure techniques on these reflexes, impulses are sent along the energy channels to unblock congestions that could otherwise manifest into disease. A Reflexology treatment reduces tension, induces relaxation and enhances gland and organ functions to reset the body’s homeostasis. Reflexology is registered as a health profession under the Allied Health Professions Act of 1982. A 2-year diploma must be obtained from a provider that is registered by the Department of Higher Education & Training and accredited by the Allied Health Professions Council. The International Academy of Reflexology & Meridian Therapy was established in South Africa in 1983 by Inge Dougans and meets the above requirements. The Academy has gained a high reputation for incorporating the ancient Chinese philosophies of the Meridians and the Five Elements.

The Academy has recently opened a new campus in Gardens, Cape Town and will continue to deliver a high standard of training and development in the field of Reflexology. For more information please contact us on 0861-REFLEX (733 539) or please visit www.reflexologycourse.co.za
