Overview - COMPASSION IN ACTION The Kagyu Monlam is a yearly gathering for world peace and harmony held each winter in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, with devotees coming from India, the Himalayas and different parts of the world.

Kagyupa International Monlam Trust (KIMT) organized its annual Well-Being Free Medical Camp (WFMC) from Feb 15 to Feb 22, 2016. Beneficiaries of these camps are the people from villages in & around Bodhgaya. Services provided at the camp were: free health check-ups, consultations & medicines. Free diagnosis and initial management of diseases were also provided. Patients received minor surgical dressings and treatment of infections.

Apart from healthcare counselling, awareness on prevention, management and diagnoses of diseases, the main components of this camp were as follows:

1. Western Medicine

2. Tibetan Medicine and Acupuncture treatments

3. Physiotherapy treatments

4. Installation of RO Water Purifier with Alkaline at Kasturba Gandhi Girls Hostel, Basari

This year’s WFMC initiatives placed greater emphasis on educating the public and prevention of illness.

Services and treatment in various branches of healthcare including Internal Medicine, Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Dermatology were provided. In addition, there were Tibetan Doctors from Men-Tse-Khang of (Sowa Rigpa Branch of Medicine) to provide consultancy and medicines. All services, medicines and supplements were provided free of cost.

In WFMC 2016 at 33rd Kagyu Monlam, 3696 patients were given medical consultation and treatment in the Western Medicine section and around 400 patients per day at Tibetan Medicine and Physiotherapy sections.

PROCEEDINGS & HIGHLIGHTS: Pre-camp: Planning of the camp happened at various levels. People involved in previous camps were consulted for suggestions to improve the design of the camp. Coordinators started working far ahead of the camp to organize the staff and flow of events. There has been continuous effort to improve the camp every year on directive of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa: “When we do something for people, we have to do it genuinely as if we are doing it for ourselves.” This year there was a special effort to upgrade the camp: the medicines were branded and top quality, and doctors and nurses were certified professionals. They also had to apply 3 months ahead of time, and all applications were vetted based on the individual’s abilities and motivation. Looking at the needs from the previous year, this year the coordinators newly added in 24/7 emergency care and two physiotherapists.

Three days of mobile camps were planned at this stage to expand the scope and reach of the benefits of the camp. The village of Parariya under Bodhgaya Block was added this year.

After meeting with the District Magistrate in Gaya, the Medical Camp coordinators visited various area villages. The two coordinators consulted with the village leaders and sought their cooperation prior to the camps. At the same time, banners were placed and public announcements were put out at many places to maximize public awareness of the camp and services that would be offered. Since the bus ride to Bodhgaya to find medical care is difficult for poor and sick people, the Medical Camp was brought to them.

TEAM: A team of medical professionals comprising of 5 doctors from A N Magadh Medical College (Gaya), 1 doctor from Tibetan Delek Hospital (Dharamsala HP), 4 Tibetan Medicine doctors, 2 physiotherapist and 12 nurses from Delhi and Sikkim were invited to participate and cater to the patients in the camp.

Organisers deemed it imperative to have medical professionals to work and provide medical services to the patients.

Camp Process Map:

The heath care counselling received in these four steps is the medical camps most

important service to patients.

TheGyalwangKarmapaalsowalkedacrosstheroad to the Akong Tulku Rinpoche MemorialSoupKitchen,whichprovidedhotmealstothepeople coming for medical care and anyoneelsewhowashungry.When thedoctorswereout in thevillage, thesoupkitchengave fresh

fruit and juices to all the patients. Theproximityofthesoupkitchenandthemedicalcamp underscored the connection betweenhealthandnutrition.

MedicalcarewasofferedforfourdaysinBodhGaya and for one day each in three outlyingvillages.

ConcurrentwiththesemedicalcampswastheTibetanmedical servicesprovidedatGarchenSite, near Kagyu Monlam Pavilion. One tenthoused long tables of Tibetan medicine forfree distribution, its herbal aromas Jilling thearea. The three other tents were theconsultationroomsoffourTibetandoctors:Dr.Dawa Dorjee, Dr. Namgyal Qusar, Dr. KalchoeQusar,andDr.Tseyang.

Onthefollowingday,February16th,similarnumbersofpatientscameforconsultationandtreatmentandmanymorepeopleenjoyedagoodmeal.

Asatokenofappreciationandgreatersupport,KIMTdonatedsportsequipmentlikecricketbats,balls,foot balls, badminton sets and jump ropes etc.This donationwasmade to the school. KIMT isestablishing a longer term relationship withthese villages in an effort to make a realdifferenceintheirlivesoverall.

Now the girls carry Eilteredwater in bottles anddrink more. Feb 21, 2016: The last mobilecamp was taken to ParariyaVillage, Bodhgaya Block. Head ofthe Government Middle Schoolextended all help and support for

t h e successfulconductofthecamp.Over550people turnedup for the camp.People at thisvillage mentioned that a camp like this wasJirstintheirvillageandexpressedgratitudeforthe same. People in this villagemostly belong to the loweststrataofthecommunity.

Inbrief,themedicalcamphadateamofcoordinators,doctors,nurses,andvolunteerstotalling33people.WFMC2016servedover1000patientsadayinBodhgayaandthethree villages. In the future, theKagyupa International MonlamTrustwill continue todevelop itscare for the localpeopleandalsoforthepilgrimsfromalloverwhocome to th i s most sacredBuddhistsite.

Last year the Gyalwang Karmapain his address had said, “We areveryhappytoofferfreehealthcareinBodhgaya—themost importantplace for Buddhists as it is thesourceofwisdomintheworld,thep l a c e o f t h e B u d d h a ' senlightenment.” He noted thatthere aremany Tibetan Buddhistprayer festivals in Bodhgaya, anditisimportanttogivebacktothepeopleherewhohavebeensohelpful.

Emergency Services: Team of nurses and coordinators stayed alert and ready to tackle every health emergency during the congregation of thousands of devotees of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa. The District Magistrate of Gaya extended help in the form of an ambulance standing on the Kagyu Monlam site to be available in case of an emergency. All of these have been tremendous learning experience for the team to plan future preparedness and organize personnel for the camp.

Last year at WFMC, an extensive survey was carried out to study disease profiles of the people visiting and receiving treatment. This data was processed, analysed and used to plan and design the camp this year.

Akong Tulku Rinpoche Memorial Soup Kitchen: For the last 10 years, students of the late Akong Tulku Rinpoche have been giving food to local people during the Kagyu Monlam. This started with small scale projects based at the Mahayana Hotel with the kind support of Trinley the manager there. Later on they helped Chamsing (HH Karmapa’s sister), to offer food to over 800 people a day as part of her wish to support His Holiness’s long life and activity. More recently, at the suggestion of Lama Choedrak, the Soup Kitchen has worked in partnership with Kagyu

Monlam Medical Camp and this partnership continues to flourish with even more ambitious plans envisaged for future Kagyu Monlams.

Before Akong Tulku Rinpoche died in tragic c ircumstances in 2013, his chari table o r g a n i s a t i o n Ro k p a h a d e s t a b l i s h e d humanitarian projects throughout Tibet, Nepal, Africa and Europe. When Rinpoche was escaping from Tibet he almost died of starvation and at that time he made a promise that if he

survived, he would always do whatever he could to make sure that no-one was hungry. The Soup Kitchens that he established in various countries always followed the same principles: to offer food to anyone who asks, to give with kindness and compassion, to treat others as equals and to give without any expectations.

Over the years, so many volunteers from around the world have worked together joyfully to serve others at the Kagyu Monlam Soup Kitchen, and

found that expressing their kindness by putting compassion into action brought unexpected blessings and connection to others. Of course the life of those who we have served remains unimaginably difficult; but just because we cannot solve all of their problems does not mean that offering food and kindness is a waste of time. In the simple act of giving, if only for a

brief moment, something shifts as people who are accustomed to experiencing rejection and unsatisfied wanting are able to receive

acceptance, respect and the satisfaction of eating good hot food. This in itself feels worthwhile and who knows what seeds have been planted.

This year the Soup Kitchen supported the medical team by giving fruit and healthy snacks when we travelled to surrounding villages for 2 days. After that for 5 days we served about 500 hot meals and fruit every lunchtime to those attending the general Medical Camp as well as to others (including cycle rickshaw drivers and the local snake charmer!) who benefitted from good quality rice, dal and vegetables all cooked by the wonderful Tergar kitchen team. For the final 3 days of the Monlam they supported the specialist medical team from Max India Foundation in a new partnership which we hope will develop further our aspirations to provide Well-Being for All.

Because of Akong Tulku’s knowledge of the remote areas of Tibet, he was instrumental in helping to locate the young boy to be recognised as His Holiness 17th Karmapa. Like so many of our great Kagyu Lamas he devoted his life to the

welfare of others and because he was so busy with his humanitarian work in Tibet, unfortunately he was never able to attend the Kagyu Monlam himself. However, on the 15th February 2016 it felt like the continuation of his activity was blessed: His Holiness Gyalwang Karmapa somehow found time in his busy schedule to visit the Soup Kitchen which this year has been dedicated to the swift return of Akong Tulku Rinpoche at the sincere request of his brother Choje Lama Yeshe Rinpoche.

The Kagyupa International Monlam Trust was registered on January 20, 2004 and was granted FCRA approval (vide Registration No. 031090082) on July 31, 2008. The Trust maintains a principal address at Sujata Bypass Road, BodhGaya, Gaya, Bihar- 824231, India.

The main activity of the Kagyupa International Monlam Trust is to organize the annual religious prayers for world peace held in BodhGaya and to organize teachings for monks, nuns and pilgrims.

Principal charitable activities of the Trust involve providing free medical services, free meals and other contributions to assist poor and underprivileged people. The Trust also focuses on environmental activities both locally and internationally. Through these activities, the Trust aims at raising awareness of local and global health and environmental issues.
