Hip-Hop and Rap found their way to Germany in
the 1980s. Hip Hop became popular because of the stationed
American soldiers in Germany, movies and CDs. Movies like Wild Style and Beat Street animated
young people to breakdance, to spray or to rap. So there was an English speaking Hip-Hop wave.
History of Hip Hop music in Germany
The first German rappers started to rap in
English. They thought that to rap in German was a taboo and vintage.
Torch, a German rapper with an immigrant background, tried to rap in German first. The crowd liked it because they understood what he was rapping about.
The beginning of German rap
Born on September 29, 1971 in Heidelberg,
Germany. His mother comes from Haiti but his father is
German. He began to rap in the 1980s and was one of the
first German rappers in the young German hip-hop generation.
Torch (Frederik Hahn)
Born on June 04, 1984 in Vevey, Swiss. His mother is Italian and his father Austrian. He lives in Berlin, Germany. As a 14-year-old boy he began to rap in French
and produced his own beats. Later he started to rap in German.
He usually raps about his childhood which is characterized by his immigrant background.

He was born in 1967 in
Russia and is a German short story writer. His most popular book „Russendisko“ (Russian Disco) is about 3 guys who come to Germany in 1990. One of them isn’t a Jew, that’s why he doesn’t get a visa for longer than 3 months. The story is about how they earn their money and how they want to make the guy a Jew.
