Well Hello you wonderful people, HerbertHutton Hedgehog here, glad to be with youagain.

It’s been a strange sort of winter, not always coldenough for hibernating but definitely cold enough forthe bugs, beetles and all the other juicy grubs not tobe around for us to eat, so thank you all who havebeen putting food and water out for my friends andme. It makes such a difference.

Such a lot of my friends are awake now and eventhough we live around each other we don't really likeeach other so there is always a lot of pushing andshoving going on. It's pretty harmless although wecan get quite noisy. On a brighter note I don't thinkit will be long before the lady hedgehogs wake up.Did you know us blokes come out of hibernation acouple of weeks before the girls, it gives us chance tofind plenty of food and get our strength up so we arelooking our best for the girls. Or is it just that they liketheir beds more than we do.?

All that means that it won't be long before the littlehoglets are around, did you know that's what theycall baby hedgehogs, of course being selfish males wedon't have anything to do with them, just leave it allto the mothers who usually have between 4 and 7 ofthe critters. Sometimes the mothers get a bitoverwhelmed and escape the nest during the day, just for a rest or to pick up some extra food for addedenergy. If you are lucky enough to have a mum andbabies you may see them walking about looking forfood or water, she teaches them how to look for food, and just how to be hedgehogs then after about 8weeks she just leaves them to get on with it so eventhough most people say if a hedgehog is out duringthe day it is in trouble actually not every hedgehogneeds rescuing. If one of us is moving with purposeeven in the daylight it is probably just hungry or eventhirsty. At the same time if we are out and notmoving around we probably need a bit of help fromyou. Some mothers abandon the young if the nest isdisturbed and the babies will come out looking forher, they cry and make quite a bit of noise and wherethere is one there are usually more. If you do find oneplease keep an eye out for more.Always handle us with protection on your hands, notnecessarily because of our spikes but to prevent thepassing on of germs and other things. Gardeninggloves are good or a towel, tea towel or as a last

resort you can always pull your sleeves right down tocover your hands. If you think my friend is in need ofattention please put it in a high sided box (we areexcellent climbers) on a towel or fleece and coveredover with the same. You can offer us a shallow dishof water but it is unwise to feed us until you havespoken to someone who can assess what is needed. If we are dehydrated food can be quite dangerous forus.

My namesake HHH as in Holderness HedgehogHospital are always ready to help with advice, practical assistance and can talk you through what isbest. Their emergency number is 07563917914. Theycan triage over the phone and direct you as to whatis best to do.

They have a local outreach hospital in Hutton whosenumber is 07722483845. Ann is always happy to helpif she is available.

Sadly the open day planned for the 2ⁿd of May hashad to be postponed until later in the year.

Look out for the new date when you will be able tolearn more about the charity and how to make yourgarden a hedgehog haven or even how to getinvolved.Hoping to see you soon and until next time thank youfor reading.

Childhood Experiences of WWII

When we went to the WI hall we spoke to lots of peoplethat had been alive during the war. Sonia Butler was one ofthese people and here are some of the things we found outabout her childhood during WWII.War threatSonia explained that she was not nervous nor worried aboutthe war starting. When Sonia was younger, she didn’t knowabout the war and when it was going to start. Sonia was sixyears old when the war started so she was not that awareof the war or the threats it carried. Sonia lived on the otherside of the Humber during the war. She recalled that shehad lots of friends where she lived.SchoolSonia commented that she loved school. Every child went toschool during the war. At school, Sonia loved painting andPE. There were only outside toilets so it wasn’t verycomfortable. Sonia told us that she had to use newspaperfor toilet paper! Her favourite pudding was spotted dick. When the war began the teachers stayed the same so noneof them were called up to fight.RationingDuring the war Sonia told us that you had to eat what youwere given or you wouldn’t get anything. She explained thatshe had to like the food she was given because they weren’tlucky enough to have the same variety of foods that we do.

EvacuationShockingly, Soniaremembered that hercousin was bombedtwo times. Her threebrothers stayed withher during the warsince she was notevacuated. Sonia alsohad an AndersonShelter in her gardenand this was used when they heard the air raid sirens.PlaySonia used to play with skipping ropes at school and home. She remembered playing with other children where shelived as well as the children she played with at school.HomesSonia’s house had three bedrooms and Sonia had one of herown because she was the only female sibling. Her familyhad to boil the kettle over a fire. Luckily in Sonia’s housenothing was destroyed during the war. Sonia recountedthat there were lots of power cuts.Written by Sophie, Katie and Igor.

A MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Simon Elliott

I went hunting this morning …for toilet rolls. If you’d told me a year agothat I would spend about anhour going from shop to shop

to find such a basic item, I wouldn’t have believedyou …!Much greater changes are in store for many of us,and these are undoubtedly challenging times foryoung people, children and their parents, employersand employees, older people and those who live withmedical conditions. It seems at the moment that theonly constant factor is “change”…When things change, it’s easy for us to find ourselvesin “panic mode”, maybe buying up more loo roll thanwe can possibly expect to use, or sanitizer to washour hands with, or whatever it may be. If you are oneof those people who has been doing a bit of panicbuying, or “stocking up”, please hear me when I saythat I’m not here to criticize or condemn you … farfrom it.This summer (in July), I’m expecting to reach apersonal milestone, it will be 25 years since I began

working as a “vicar” in the Church of England. I hadsome cards printed out to distribute to friends andfamily at the time, in case they wanted to pray forme. At the bottom of the card, there were five words –“Perfect love drives out fear.” They are words fromthe Bible, from a letter which a guy called John wroteto some people who were facing a lot of challenges, including persecution. It’s easy to feel afraid when the world is changing. But God’s love is present with us, in April 2020 andbeyond. His love for you is “perfect”, total, complete. And if you stop for a few minutes and thank Him forHis love, He will draw near to you and drive out allfear from your heart and mind and life.My prayer for us all at this time is that we wouldknow that “perfect love” which “drives out fear.”And that by the time the summer comes, we wouldbegin to see some healthy normality returning to ourvillage and to our life here. In the meantime, pleasekeep an eye out for special events which will betaking place in the run-up to Easter. We can’t haveour “normal services” on a Sunday, but we areopening up St. Peter’s Church from 9am to 10amevery day during April, May, June and July, and arehappy to arrange for the building to be opened upfor anyone who would like to visit, take some time, reflect on life, or even pray …

Hutton Cranswick Methodist ChurchSunday Service: Cranswick 10.30

Minister : Rev’d Robert Amos – 01377 252105Inter-Church Prayer Fellowship

Mondays 9.30 am at 13a Orchard Lane

A couple of months ago we published an articleintroducing our future Methodist Minister for thischapel and circuit. Since that article appeared RichardTeal has been very busy, along with his lovely wife Sue,visiting the Methodist church in Africa as part of his newrole as President Designate Methodist Church Britain!

When Richard finishes his role as President of theMethodist Church Britain later next year he will be takingover as Minister for the Methodist Church in the Driffieldand Hutton Cranswick Circuit.

So, with that in mind, we thought it would be nice toshare a couple of pictures of his, and Sue’s, experiences! We hope you enjoy them.

IN RICHARD’S WORDS . . .

Another fantastic experience. We started with atour at 7am around Maura Methodist Hospital. The CEO and our Methodist Church Missionpartner showed us the wonderful work they areengaged in and the vision for the future of thehospital.

Next we journeyed for an hour and a half towhere I planted a tree at Guita Methodist churchwhere the first missionaries had come andMethodism had started in that area. I signed, along with the presiding bishop, a number ofvisitors books.

Then we were driven into the Forest where I hadbeen asked to preach and dedicate a newMethodist church. This started with a cookedmeal at 10.00 am and finished at 5.00 pm withanother cooked meal, so you see how long thewonderful exciting worship was. We wereexpecting 1000 people and indeed 2500 peopleturned up and were all fed with cooked meals. After I preached I made an altar call and 60people responded. The presiding bishop and Iprayed for those people. Choirs galore, drama, singing were just wonderful.

The photographs reflect the day!

We now have 24 paid up members 22 of whomattended the meeting.Gwynneth urged us not to bin our WILife magazines after reading them, but to save them for handing out withour programme to any prospectivenew members. Our speakers for the evening wereFred and Carol Walkington ofBridlington. Their subject was EastCoast ganseys. Fred, a formerfisherman and Coxswain of theBridlington Lifeboat, provided aninteresting slide show of variousfishermen and talked about thedifferent Gansey patterns that theywore. There was even one photo of afisherman walking his daughter to herwedding, she in a beautiful white dress and he in hisbest gansey, new flat cap and nice shiny shoes. For the uninitiated a gansey is a fisherman’s jumper. As Fred finished talking, Carol took over, explaininghow she knitted the garments, all in one piece, noseams. It seems bicycle spokes make very good longneedles. Members were interested to see the differentpatterns Carol had brought with her.

We know the coming days and weeks aregoing to be difficult for families across the area,as the spread of Covid-19 causes schools toclose. As the experts in developing skills andbringing adventure to young people, we wantto do what we can to help.

While we normally love the great outdoors,we’ve found some inspired indoor activity ideas(if we do say so ourselves).

Keep your kids learning new skills and havingfun (and avoid hearing ‘I’m bored’ every 30seconds) all in #TheGreatIndoors

https://www.scouts.org.uk/the-great-indoors/

There are 100 different activities to do.

The Great IndoorsIt's in challenging times like these that ourScout values matter most. The ScoutAssociation is talking to the Government andother community organisations to see howScouts can support our country during thiscrisis. One way is that some fun activities arebeing developed for young people to do athome with their parents if families are facedwith self-isolation.

We’ll be sharing with our Scouts via ourFacebook page some different badges thatthey can do themselves at home, with thingsthey will have around the house already.

The best thing that I can ask all our membersand other villagers to do is act according toScout Values and help each other. Scoutvalues are:

Integrity - We act with integrity; we arehonest, trustworthy and loyal.

Respect - We have self-respect and respectfor others.

Care - We support others and take care of theworld in which we live.

Belief - We explore our faiths, beliefs andattitudes.

Co-operation - We make a positive difference;we co-operate with others and make friends.

Stories About Victorian Children by Year 5 Pupils

Stories by Year 2 PupilsOne hot sunny day I was walking across the beach. I suddenly feltsomething hard on my feet. I picked the shimmering thing up and itwas a pack of bubbles. I blew the bubbles and they all flew around me.They flew down into the sea and I saw some fish. Then the bubblesfloated up into space and I saw a shiny star. When I came back to the ground I saw a little sad girl. I put thebubbles down for her and she blew the bubbles. Then she becamehappy again.By Romi

One dark gloomy day I was walking along the dark, gloomy shore as soon as possible I saw a shimmering,

shiny cylinder on the ground. Then I blew them! After that I saw a big, shimmering bubble in theair and then I went on it because it was so cool.Suddenly more slowly appeared so I quickly jumpedon them. After that a bubble gently went in the seaand I could see tropical fish and coral.Suddenly I went in space and I could see twinklystars also spinning planets.Later I went back to Earth then I saw a lonely, sadgirl slowly walking. As soon as possible I went to putthe pot on the gold, yellow sand. All of a sudden Ihid behind a rock. Next she spotted the bubblesand she slowly walked up to them. All of a suddenshe blew them and she was super happy and shewent on a bubble and flew away in the sky.By Lana

From my nephew Mike

As we go about our lives during thistumultuous period, schools are cancelled, social gatherings are restricted...... The pace oflife actually slows.

Take this time to look inward as to who youare going to be during this time. A mediapanicked hoarder? Or the true you?

Before you fast walk for that last pack of toiletroll...... Stop and think. Others are in the sameposition as you.

Our humanity comes from our ancestors.....Our heritage.... Who we are.

We left the wild life behind us and becamedomesticated. Living in communities.....Looking out for each other.

Why not buy that pack,...... But offer to split itwith someone.. That last tin of spam....... Thelittle old lady wandering over to where youare may well have needed sustenance also.

Come together as a community..... Yourstreet..... Your cul de sac........ Talk to eachother..... Help each other...... Provide for eachother.

It's what we've evolved into....... Not a bunchof unforgiving selfish predators that care notfor their fellow species.

Be safe, be kind.....Most of all .. Look inside........ And be you.
