Create picture-perfect photo candles By SANDI GENOVESE

Scripps Howard News Service

Celebrations like Christmas and Hanukkah combine family events like holiday decorating and gift giv-ing, and both can become handmade traditions.

Whether you’re looking for clever gifts to make for your friends or for a special way to decorate your home, you can’t go wrong with candles. I read that candles are the most popular gift of the holiday season, and no wonder: They’re inexpensive, they make your house smell great and they are easy to personalize with everything from stickers to photographs.

The goal is to enjoy the glow of the burning candle, but leave the decorated surface intact, and I have come up with three different ways to approach it.

-- If you favor the glow from a real candle, it’s important to burn it long enough to create a hole in the center that will hold a tea light. Whenever you want to burn the candle you are really burning the tea light, so the candle decor will remain intact. As the tea light burns down, simply re-place it with a new one.

-- Another option is to place the candle inside a glass hur-ricane and decorate the glass instead of the candle.

-- A third possibility is to replace the real candle with a flameless candle that is battery-operated. I found faux can-dles at big-box stores, craft stores and on the TV shopping

channels, and all were made of real wax and scented with vanilla. In short, they looked and smelled just like a real candle but without the safety concerns of the candle flame or the problem of burning down to nothing and ruining the embellishments. I was surprised to see that the faux flame even flickered like a real candle.

Once you make your selection -- real, faux or glass -- it’s time to consider the embellishments. There are sev-eral choices, and I prefer to mix them together, creating a grouping that includes candles decorated with photos, sheet music, patterned paper, jingle bells, ribbon and rhinestone stickers.

Rhinestone stickers look great on a flickering candle and are easy to apply. The entire design pulls off the backing sheet in one piece, making it easy to fasten to the candle. Once attached, it’s helpful to roll the decorated candle on its side to ensure a good bond.

A candle, embellished with a photo, is wonderfully per-sonal and good-looking. Make a copy of the photo on a copy machine or printer and adjust the size to fit the can-dle. I like to enlarge a photo enough to completely cover the candle with two images. It’s difficult to see the flame (real or faux) through the thickness of photo paper, so copy paper or vellum are better choices. Adhere the pho-tocopy to the candle with spray adhesive or run it through an Xyron machine to apply the adhesive in order to fasten it to the candle.

Patterned paper or sheet music are applied to the candle in the same way and can be further embellished with rib-bon and jingle bells.

A grouping of customized candles looks great on a fire-place mantle or down the center of a dining table. They are sure to be saved and enjoyed every holiday season.

Just a little more than a week away, Christmas will again embrace our families with its magic. This special

time of year gives us the opportunity to not only celebrate the birth of Christ, but also each other.

I’m grateful that my daughters have be-gun their family life nearby as well as so many cousins, nephews, nieces, aunts and uncles. It’s nice to know they are close by.

This time of year also brings many of our fellow Americans heartache and worries as their loved ones are serving our coun-try overseas. Please take time this holiday season to pray for our military who will be spending Christmas away from their homes as they protect our freedom and country.

It looks like fall weather has already passed us by and below freezing tempera-tures are here. It’s not too late to do some last minute winterizing to help keep the heating bills low and your family warm.

The article on page 7, by house inspector dwight Barnett, emphasizes the impor-

tance of insulation and how it affects the efficiency of keeping the warm air inside. On page 9, are a few more tips on simple ways to winterize. I’ve been afraid to check the Farmers Almanac to see what Mother Nature has in store for us this winter, but hopefully it’s not a repeat of last year’s flurry fury.

luckily our two dogs, a retriever and black lab, don’t snoop around too much into the Christmas decorations or presents. Unless, of course, we put their stockings out too early.

With my oldest daughter being a veteri-narian, I hear horror stories of dogs who have eaten things that have to be removed surgically. From ribbon to stockings, dogs’ curiosity often get the best of them and by the time you get home, they have eaten their way through the new decor. Check out the article on page 14 and keep your pets safe and healthy.

By the time Christmas is over, I know that our family will have accumulated bags and bags of trash. From wrapping paper to

boxes to bows, it seems as though we gen-erate a lot of trash during this time. Now, more than ever, it’s time for us all to begin working towards wrapping “green” in an effort to keep our planet healthy. Check out a great tip on wrapping green on page 18.

Our feature story this week is on the prestigious Village of loch loyd. The home listed by The Ken Wiley Team of Reece and Nichols is shown on the cover and offers the opportunity to live within a community that is not only protected by 24 hour secu-rity service but offers a true feeling of liv-ing within a village. Read more on pages 10 and 11.

When we recall Christmas past, we usu-ally find that the simplest things - not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness. ~ Bob Hope

Getting organized takes some planning and discipline, but before you spend a small fortune on plastic tubs and other boxes manufactured and marketed just for storage, take a look around the house for items you can reuse. You can save

some money and keep a few more things out of the landfill.jennifer Schwab, the Sierra Club’s director of sustainability, said reusing household

items is even better than recycling many things because some material, including plas-tic, is difficult to recycle.

“It just comes down to putting a little more time into really thinking about things you have and how you can reuse them,” Schwab said.

Professional eco-organizer julie Seibert, of Healing Through Organization in Raleigh, N.C., said finding organizing tools around your house is just a question of seeing items with a fresh set of eyes.

“Get out of the mindset of going to the container store and spending $30 or $50 on stuff made in China,” she said.

Here are Schwab and Seibert’s tips for household items that might have a second life for storage.

Wine bottle cartons are great to reuse for storing just about any kind of breakable ob-ject. They’re particularly handy for Christmas decorations. just wrap each ornament in some paper and slide them into the snug bottle-sized compartments. These cartons are perfect for storage because they’re easily stackable.

empty tissue boxes can find a second life dispensing a variety of things that clutter up drawers and cupboards. Restuff them with your plastic grocery bags, which you can re-use as garbage bags. Or refill the box with the small plastic bags you use for pet poop.

Used Fedex packages are sturdy and tough to recycle. But you can cut one down for use as a receptacle for magazines, cookbooks or paperwork.

Save the clear plastic zippered bags in which most blankets and sheet sets are sold. The plastic is tough to recycle, but it’s sturdy and easily reused for storing just about

anything. “You can even write on the outside with a marker,” Seibert said.Canvas shoe organizers, particular the kind that can hang on the wall or from a hook,

are great for more than shoes. Use the compartments for any small item, from toys to craft supplies. Many are attractive enough to hang in the middle of a room, not just in a closet.

Clean out empty baby food jars, jam jars and other small glass containers to use for storing small items like nuts and bolts on your tool bench, buttons and notions in your sewing room or any collections of small items. Clear glass jars work best so you can see the items.

Save on storage: using household junk to organize

I have received several questions con-cerning the increased costs of energy for heating and cooling the home. Most of the questions concern whether to add in-sulation to the attic and whether it’s cost-efficient.

From what I can gather, the cost of en-ergy is expected to rise in the foreseeable future. Because of these increases, you may not notice a difference in your heat-ing bills at first, but over time I believe

adding insulation will save you money. Taking into account the cost of adding insulation versus the expected rise in en-ergy costs over the next seven to 10 years, I’m sure that you will find adding insula-tion to be cost-efficient.

First, you need to know how much and what type of insulation you currently have. There are loose-fill products such as fiberglass, cellulose and granular, and blanket types of insulation of fiberglass

and mineral fibers.Granular insulation, a small pebblelike

material, is commonly referred to as ver-miculite. Vermiculite and possibly some rock-wool insulating materials may con-tain asbestos, a known health hazard. If you do not suspect that the materials contain asbestos, measure the depth or thickness of the material. Record this in-formation so that you can find the R-value of the material.

Second, dO NOT cover any of the older knob-and-tube wiring in the attic or walls of the home. The ceramic knobs used to support the wires on ceiling and floor joists and the ceramic tubes used where the wire passes through the joists can easily identify knob and tube. This type of wiring is air-cooled and covering it can lead to a fire in the walls or attic.

How much additional insulation do you need? The thermal value of insulating ma-terials is rated as an R-value, such as R-19 or R-30. The larger the R-value, the better the insulating material is at preventing thermal transfer. The department of en-ergy has a website where you enter your ZIP code and other information, and the R-value approved for your area will ap-pear (www.ornl.gov/sci/roofs+walls/insu-

lation/ins_16.html).By far, expanding-foam insulation has

the greater R-value, but you would most likely need to remove the existing insu-lation for proper installation. expanding foam can be sprayed on the underside of the roof decking, but any residue from a loose-fill insulation could cause the foam to lose adhesion.

loose-fill cellulose insulation has too much density to apply over fiberglass, but you can apply loose-fill fiberglass over cellulose. The added weight of the cellu-lose over fiberglass would compress the fiberglass, and it would lose some of its R-value.

The following is a list of insulating mate-rials and the R-value per inch of depth for each: loose-fill fiberglass has an R-value per/inch of 2.2 to 2.9; loose-fill cellulose. 3.1 to 3.8; blankets of fiberglass, 2.9 to 3.8; and polyicynene (expanding foam), 3.6 to 4.3.

A handy homeowner can lease the equipment required to install loose-fill insulating materials or simply install the blanket materials by hand. The polyicy-nene foam needs to be installed by a pro-fessional.

When debbie and Nicholas pur-chased their new home, one of the biggest selling features

was the large backyard, complete with ten-nis court and pool. But when it came to the basement, the couple wasn’t so crazy about the original 1970s decor.

With orange carpeting, wood paneling and lime striped wallpaper, this dated, dim space was definitely 30 years behind the times. The news wasn’t all bad, though: The basement definitely had good bones, with lots of space and a functional layout.

Nicholas, a tennis pro, wanted a room where he could entertain students after a heavy workout on the court. debbie wanted the other end of the basement transformed

into a welcoming family area where the kids could watch TV, play games or stretch out in front of the fire.

There wasn’t much to save in this space, so we started by stripping off the old wall-paper and ripping up that orange carpet. If I could have chosen only one thing to get rid of in this space, it would have been that carpet. Fortunately, Nicholas gave me carte blanche to give the basement a total face-lift, so our creativity knew no bounds.

Since the tennis court and pool play such a big part in this household, I chose a color palette reminiscent of sandy beaches, blue water and crisp tennis whites. Chrome ac-cents were also incorporated to give the space a contemporary feeling.

The walls were painted in a fresh shade of ocean blue with sandy golden accent walls. The brickwork around the fireplace and the existing cabinetry in the family area were treated to a fresh coat of white paint. We also enlarged the cabinetry to make it deep-er so it would accommodate the TV. Presto: The cabinetry got a face-lift and became an entertainment center with lots of storage for

games, videos and books.Contemporary blue-gray broadloom was

laid throughout the space, and the bar was reupholstered in an eye-catching blue ultra-suede fabric. I designed a modern wood-panel detail that we mounted on the wall behind the bar as well as over the fireplace. This common element links both the “tennis zone” and the “family zone.”

The clunky old light fixtures definitely had to go. We replaced them with a full 24 feet of new halogen track lighting. This way, individual fixtures can be directed at furni-ture, artwork or other key focal points. I also chose some decorative new sconces to fit into the new wood detailing over the bar and fireplace.

With the heavy work done, it was time for the finishing touches. I created a conversa-tional grouping around the fireplace in the family area, using a white sofa, a contem-porary new coffee table and two gold slip-per chairs. The slipper chairs are perfect for this space because the backs of the chairs are low so they don’t obstruct the view of the TV.

Across from the bar, we installed built-in storage tables and bench seating. We topped the benches with comfy, 4-inch foam cushions, complete with back cushions and throw pillows in our palette of sand, blue and white. Since Nicholas’ tennis zone is such a long space, a wooden screen and some greenery serve to shorten the room a bit while allowing a bit of privacy for bathers coming in from the pool.

With fresh new finishes, bright modern lighting and luxurious fabrics, this space was transformed into entertainment central. How divine!

For many, the new year means a fresh start and there is no better place to be-gin than inside the home. Your home

is meant to last, but over time, simple wear and tear can result in inefficient systems and less-than-perfect conditions.

Give your baseboards protection While adding a new coat of paint to your

walls is always a good idea when maintain-ing your home, you should freshen up your baseboards, which often see the most wear and tear. Wash them down using a pine-based cleaner, a little bit of warm water and

a sponge to remove dirt and grime. Then touch up your baseboards with paint to protect them and keep them looking brand new.

Save thousands with a little caulkOver time the excessive use of a bathtub

or shower can lead to cracks in your grout and caulking. These cracks are not only un-sightly, but can cause greater leakage prob-lems costing you thousands of dollars if not fixed immediately.

The good news is this problem can be resolved easily and inexpensively. Use a

silicone-based caulk, which ensures a fast-drying, smooth surface and creates a strong seal to prevent leakage. Start by peeling away the old caulk and making sure the sur-face is completely dry before re-applying.

Become your own carpet cleanerWith heavy traffic, household carpeting

takes a beating almost daily, collecting dirt, grime, outdoor particles and plenty of dust. Not only are these items harmful to your health, they will wear down your carpeting ... and do so quickly. While its good practice to vacuum on a weekly basis, cleaning your

carpeting every 90 to 120 days will give you a cleaner home and prolong the life of your carpeting. Hiring a professional can be ex-pensive, so stop by your local hardware store to rent a carpet cleaning system for a fraction of the cost of having the work done professionally.

Make sure the air you breathe is the best

Anyone with allergies knows that air qual-ity is very important. This applies inside the home as much as outside.

A great way to prevent bad air circulating in your home - and make sure your equip-ment is running efficiently - is by replacing the air filters in your forced-air furnace.

Looking at the Ambridge puts the viewer in mind of simpler times. More than anything, it’s probably the

full front porch, accented by slender wood-en handrails and columns. If a porch swing suits your fancy, this is the place for it.

The plan’s symmetrical design and central dormer also add to the Craftsman bungalow effect. But this midsize home is larger than it looks from the front. Indoor living space comes close to 1,800 square feet, not includ-ing the larger bonus room over the garage.

Family gathering areas fill the main floor, circling around a central stairway. Parlor and dining room are on the right, family room and kitchen on the left. Storage closets, utilities and a small powder room are in the middle, easily accessed from every direction.

dining room and living room flow together, minimally bounded by slender wall sections that could be joined by an arch or exposed beam, if desired. The fireplace provides warmth and color when skies are dark.

An eating bar with overhead cabinets is all that separates the kitchen and family room. Working in the kitchen, you are never isolated. From here you can keep tabs on activities in the family room, front yard, covered patio and front porch. Sliding glass doors brighten the family room and provide access to a covered patio.

Upstairs, the Ambridge’s owners’ suite boasts two good-sized walk-in closets, and a private bathroom with dual vanities. The front bedroom is smaller but brighter than bed-room two.

Access to the large bonus room is through a hallway just past the bathroom, or via a sec-ond staircase entered through the garage.

Beware of curious pets and holiday decorationsDangerous decor is a big holiday sea-

son concern for our furry friends. Fortunately, keeping pets out of

poinsettias and canines away from choco-late just takes some advance planning.Greenery: Some holiday plants, such as poinsettias, holly and mistletoe, should be kept out of reach from your pets because they can cause upset stomachs, gastrointes-tinal distress and other problems. even fake plants can hurt your pet. Surprising culprits for tummy troubles are loose needles from artificial Christmas trees.

dr. Clyde dunphy of Capitol Illini Veteri-nary Services in Springfield, Ill., says he once treated a cat that was still coughing up and vomiting artificial tree needles two months after Christmas.

To keep your pet healthy, avoid using ad-ditives, such as fertilizers or home remedies like aspirin, in the water of a live tree’s base, dunphy says.

Climbing and chewing: Some pets have natural behaviors that can get them in trouble during the holidays. To prevent kitty from climbing up the Christmas tree, dun-phy suggests placing aluminum foil around

the tree base and under the tree. Cats typi-cally don’t like foil and will stay away from it.

Almost every year, dunphy says his vet-erinary clinic treats a pet that has chewed on an electrical cord for Christmas lights. To discourage gnawing, he recommends using protective devices made for com-puter cables, such as rubber or plastic cord ducts. Ryan suggests spraying Fooey ($8) on cords, which has a bitter taste.

Christmas ribbon can be a less obvious but attractive hazard to pets. dunphy says long, thin ribbon, tinsel and icicles can cre-ate an intestinal obstruction in pets.

Pets as gifts: “The biggest problem we see is when people do get new puppies at holiday time,” dunphy says. “Be especially wary of puppies because there are a lot of distractions at the holidays like presents and extra family, and when you add a new puppy to mix, you need to be exceptionally aware. It’s like having a new baby -- you need to watch closely.”

Food lying around: dunphy says baker’s chocolate is the worst.

Gifts wrapped in reused paper can look stylish if you wrap them with care. Collect brown paper, out-of-date maps and atlases, old wall charts, calendars and unused rolls of wallpaper to build up a collection of instant Christ-mas wrapping.

Pages from newspapers or magazines also make attrac-tively wrapped gifts — use the sports section of a newspa-per to wrap a gift for a sports fan, for example, or colorful comics to wrap gifts for children and teenagers. If your gift is an unusual shape, put it in a decorated or covered shoe box or shirt box, or use recycled paper sandwich bags decorated with dried leaves, pressed home-grown flowers or feathers.

A fun, quirky way to wrap a few of your favorite bulbs for an aspiring gardener is to place them inside one terra-cotta pot, place an identical upturned pot on top of it and decorate the joined rims with a length of trailing ivy. It’s the ultimate in eco-friendly wrapping, as the bulbs can be planted in the pots, and then the pots recycled indefinitely. You could also use vintage fabric or old, unwanted garments to wrap gifts: a length of velvet, an old scarf, cloth napkin, handkerchief or dish towel can all be transformed into stylish gift-wrap.

SMOkE ALArM — fALSE ALArMChester Gould, who created “dick Tracy,” was born on this

day. His square-jawed detective character solved crimes and fought a host of criminal characters. Here’s a page out of Gould’s Crimestopper’s Textbook: At 3 a.m., a family was rudely awak-ened when all of their smoke alarms went off at once. Rushing to investigate, Tracy first noted they were all hard-wired, so it wasn’t a battery problem. just then, he got a call on his wrist radio. Only two blocks away, another alarm was chirping. Rushing to the scene, Tracy noted that while this alarm was battery-operated, the batteries were fine and fully charged. Then, he noted that at both locations Mr. dust had struck again. Indeed, when dust gets into the sensor chamber on both hard-wired and battery-operated detectors, it can set them off -- creating a smoke-alarm false alarm. The answer: vacuum them periodically and replace them every 10 years.

HOW tO INStALL A DIMMEr SWItCH Any standard single-pole wall switch can be replaced with a dimmer,

so long as it is used only with an incandescent light bulb and there is ample room in the electrical box. You will also need the right size wire connectors.

Turn off the power to the circuit and use a neon circuit tester to en-sure it is off.

Use wire connectors to connect the wire leads of the dimmer switch to the circuit wires. The switch leads are interchangeable and can con-nect to either of the two circuit wires.

Screw the dimmer switch plate unit back into the wall. From HomeDepot.com
