chemicaLs inDUstry

Vietnam’s chemicals industry generates some 11% of the entire output

of the country’s industrial production sector with notably the pro-

duction of washing agents, detergents and fertilizers on the increase.

The development of the chemicals industry is a high priority for the

government with the result that new major petrochemical projects can

be expected to drive the sector forward further.

pharmaceUticaLs inDUstry

Vietnam is one of the fastest growing pharmaceuticals markets in Asia.

In 2012, Vietnam’s drug market was worth almost USD 3 billion—

about one-third the size of the Indian market. It is expected to grow at

a rate of more than 20% through 2017. However, Vietnam doesn’t

have a modern pharmaceuticals industry. Up to 90% of raw materials

for production are currently imported. According to the Ministry of

Health, the target is for Vietnam’s own pharmaceuticals manufacturing

activities to cover 80% of demand by 2020. Investment in technology

and high quality equipment is essential if this target is to be met.

biotechnoLogy

The Vietnamese government has drawn up a master plan for biotech-

nology development and application with its final realization planned

for 2020. It mainly targets the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries,

medical-pharmaceuticals production, health-care and environmental

protection. The launch of the master plan will also encourage the

establishment and development of enterprises involved in production

and services related to biotechnology.

fooD safety

In excess of 20% of the country’s overall industrial production is gen-

erated by the food processing industry. The driving force behind this

is the demand from abroad. For export purposes, the standards of the

buyer nations require compliance, but in the domestic market too

stricter requirements for food safety have been in force since July 2011.

As a result the demand for high-quality analysis devices is rising

significantly and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

The accompanying analytica Vietnam conference is the meeting

place for the research and scientific communities. The program of scien-

tific lectures is organized by Prof. Dr. Oliver J. Schmitz (University

of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Chemistry), Prof. Dr. Pham Hung Viet

(Hanoi University of Science, CETASD) and Prof. Dr. Le Van Tan

(Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry). In 2015 a first-rate confer-

ence program with an agenda of high interest will be set again to

reflect major trends in the branch. The conference will also be featuring

several scientific workshops.
