Hayes is a Rights Respecting School

The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos.

A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils.

Why teach about rights?

With rights come responsibilities. This helps children to develop a sense of their responsibility to respect the rights of others.

We strive for the children at Hayes to develop

positive attitudes towards diversity and an understanding of the global dimension.

Core Learning Skills

Core learning skills are the skills that are fundamental to learning and performance in education, work and life. Each class has a set of ‘I can…’ statements that the children will work on throughout the lessons and in assemblies.

Page 5: Welcome to Year 3 Class Teachers Mrs Moreton, Mrs Hughes and Miss Cook Teaching Assistants Mrs Hayes, Mrs Huseyin Trainee Teachers Mr Murray, Mrs Hewitt

Our aim is to make children into independent learners. This begins in the reception classes and as they move into the juniors, they are expected to take more responsibility for their own work and resources.

Please refer to the newsletter each half-term for information about the curriculum areas and topics to be covered and ways you can support your child at home.

Please also visit the subject areas on our website for more information on how to support your child in Maths and English etc

New Curriculum

Much of the publicity about the changes to the curriculum has focussed on ‘higher expectations’ in various subjects, and it is certainly the case that in some areas the content of the new primary curriculum is significantly more demanding than in the past. For example, in mathematics there is now much greater focus on the skills of arithmetic and also on working with fractions. In science, a new unit of work on evolution is introduced for Year 6; work which would have previously been studied in secondary school. In English lessons, there will now be more attention paid to the study of grammar and spelling; an area which was far less notable in previous curricula.

We will be teaching the new curriculum this year and there is guidance as to what is in the new curriculum for different subjects in the handouts.

There will be parent workshops explaining the implications of the new national curriculum in the run up to parents evening.

The children will receive the following homework in Year 3: Maths Spellings

Homework will be set on a Friday and will be due back into school on Wednesday (unless otherwise stated). We recommend children spend 30 minutes on each piece of homework given.

If in the event that your child is unable to complete the homework at home, there will be a homework club on Thursday lunchtime for children that need to complete their homework in school time to meet the homework deadline. They will have access to iPads for MyMaths and other computer based homework. We would strongly encourage them to do it at home if they can, otherwise we can give them support in school.

Reading records: To be handed in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Reading record books are not checked daily and therefore any notes to the teacher should be addressed separately.

Please ensure your child has a reading book in school every day for quiet reading times.

Children should be encouraged to read every day for a minimum of 10 minutes at home and complete their reading record accordingly with a signature from an adult every week. Children will receive a bronze sticker for reading 3 times within the week; a silver for 4 times and a gold for 5 times.

Spellings

In KS2, children are going to receive weekly spellings. They will have one spelling lesson during the week and a test on a

Friday. Children will receive their new spelling pattern and 5 words that

they will be tested on. They will need to investigate and find more words with the same spelling pattern for the following Friday. Children will be set for their spelling lessons so that their spellings can be personalised to meet their learning needs. The sets will be based on initial assessments currently being carried out by class teachers and will be regularly reviewed to ensure children are learning the correct spellings.

The weekly spelling test will comprise of words from the list that have been sent home to learn that week and some words that aren’t on the list, but follow the same spelling pattern. Therefore, KS2 English homework will be a spelling investigation (set on a Friday) that will help the children learn their spellings ready for their test. We appreciate your support in helping your child learn their spellings at home.

Mental arithmetic and MyMaths

• Mental arithmetic tests will take place at least every other week in your child’s maths set.

• Times tables are vital.• MyMaths will be used in class and set for

homework. Children are encouraged to play games and practice different maths skills in addition to their homework.

• If your child is unsure of what to do for their homework, use the MyMaths lessons to help before completing the homework.

• The MyMaths task set, will always be linked to the learning that has taken place in class that week. If there is not a suitable activity on MyMaths, a paper homework will be sent home.

It is important that your child is punctual and has excellent attendance. 8.40-8.50am is time given to the children to complete their Green Pen Learning. This happens every day and is considered very important.

Children in 3M and 3H should enter the school via the back door of their classroom. Children in 3C should enter by the main door at the end of the Year 3 & 4 corridor. The children need to stick to the paths. Your child should arrive between 8.40 – 8.50 am. Children who arrive after this time must enter through the office.

Your child will need a named PE kit (including trainers/tracksuits for outdoor PE), an art apron and their book bag in school at all times.

Your child will remain in the same house as before.

Information continued…

When walking out of school, children must stay on the pathways and not be running across the field/on the mound, for their safety.

Uniform is the same as that worn in the infants except that from Year 3, children should be wearing a tie that they knot themselves rather than the elastic one worn by infants. We would be grateful if you would spend a little time helping your child to learn this skill.

If your child is interested in playing a musical instrument, forms are held in the school office.

Please remember to send your child to school with a healthy packed lunch in a sealed box. School dinners are nutritionally balanced.

Children may bring in a piece of fresh fruit for their break time snack.

Please remember that we are a completely nut free school! Please do not send your child in with any nut products such as nutella, cereal bars, certain types of bread. We have some children with severe nut allergies in school.

Children are encouraged to bring named water bottle into class containing water only. Children need to ensure these bottles are refilled during break time and lunch time so that this does not impact on their learning time.
