WELCOME TO WORSHIP!

No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey,

you are welcome in this United Church of Christ congregation.

Large-print bulletins, hearing devices, and cough drops

are available from the ushers.

Nursery and pre-school care is available during worship if you wish.

God is calling you today, but probably not on your cell phone!

Please remember to put it on vibrate if you are expecting an emergency call.

ALL are welcome to this time and place of worship.

Know that in this space you are welcome as you are, for who you are.

Together we celebrate all of God’s children – young, old and in-between;

male, female and in-between; gay, lesbian, straight and in-between;

the assured, the doubting, and the in-between;

the optimistic, the cynics, and the in-between;

the foolish, the wise, and the in-between.

CHORAL INTROIT Do You Hear the People Sing? Schönberg

Mark Hart, vocalist

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: We gather together to remember,

to once again tell the wonderful stories of our faith—

stories we have heard many times before,

and passed down from generation to generation;

stories of devotion and love,

of mercy and compassion,

of miracles and new life.

People: We tell these stories over and over so that we don’t forget.

We tell these stories to remember who we are and whose we are.

We tell these stories so that future generations will come to know

and love the God we serve.

Leader: Let us worship together!

*OPENING I Love to Tell the Story

Continued…

5

*OPENING PRAYER

All: Eternal God, you bring light out of darkness and hope out of despair.

Share your love with us this day that we may better love each other.

Touch our hearts and help our light shine forth in a world seeking

peace, hope, and unity. We ask this in the name of Jesus who taught

us to pray…

*THE LORD’S PRAYER (sung)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

6

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: As beloved children of God, let us not be strangers to one another, but

family in Christ. Let us greet one another by saying, “Peace be with you.”

People: And also with you.

You are invited to share words of peace with those around you.

All children through Fifth Grade wishing to attend Sunday School are

invited to leave during the Passing of the Peace and go to the Fellowship Hall.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE (Sung) We will sing through three times.

Lord, pre-pare me to be a sanc-tu—ar-y, pure and ho-ly, tried and true.

With thanks-giv-ing, I’ll be a liv-ing sanc-tu-ar-y for you.

Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.

Spir-it of the liv-ing God, fall a-fresh on me.

THE CONTEMPORARY READING An excerpt from Freedom’s Plow

A Poem by Langston Hughes

Linda Spears-Bunton, reader

America!

Land created in common,

Dream nourished in common,

Keep your hand on the plow! Hold on!

If the house is not yet finished,

Don’t be discouraged, builder!

If the fight is not yet won,

Don’t be weary, soldier!

The plan and the pattern is here,

Woven from the beginning

Into the warp and woof of America:

ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.

NO MAN IS GOOD ENOUGH

TO GOVERN ANOTHER MAN

WITHOUT HIS CONSENT.

BETTER DIE FREE,

THAN TO LIVE SLAVES.

Continued…

7

Who said those things? Americans!

Who owns those words? America!

Who is America? You, me!

We are America!

To the enemy who would conquer us from without,

We say, NO!

To the enemy who would divide

And conquer us from within,

We say, NO!

FREEDOM!

BROTHERHOOD!

DEMOCRACY!

To all the enemies of these great words:

We say, NO!

A long time ago,

An enslaved people heading toward freedom

Made up a song:

Keep Your Hand On The Plow! Hold On!

The plow plowed a new furrow

Across the field of history.

Into that furrow the freedom seed was dropped.

From that seed a tree grew, is growing, will ever grow.

That tree is for everybody,

For all America, for all the world.

May its branches spread and shelter grow

Until all races and all peoples know its shade.

KEEP YOUR HAND ON THE PLOW! HOLD ON!

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON From Deuteronomy 6

Hear, O Israel: The Eternal is our God; the Eternal God is One. You shall love the

Eternal God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these

words, which I command you this day, shall be upon your heart. You shall teach them

diligently to your children and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, when you

walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them for a

sign upon your hand and they shall be a symbol before your eyes. You shall write them

on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that you may remember and do all My

commandments, and be holy to your God.

EACH SUNDAY: WORSHIP WITH US ONLINE

Invite your family and friends around the world to worship with us online

today and each Sunday at gablesucc.org/live.

OUR PREACHER TODAY: THE REV. MARIA ANDERSON

Maria has been a member of Gables UCC since 2009, and was ordained here in

2014. She recently completed four transformative years as a hospice chaplain with Vitas

Healthcare, and is soon to start a one year residency in Clinical Pastoral Education at

Morton Plant Meese Hospital in Clearwater, Florida to stretch her chaplain muscles a

little further, and maybe find out what door God is opening next in her never dull life.

Maria was born in Cuba, but has lived most of her life in South Florida. From 2001-2013,

she served as one of the elected City Commissioners of Coral Gables. She has been

married for almost 36 years to Ted, mom for almost 30 years to Peter, and for many dog

and cat years to beautiful four-legged children. She has lived many life incarnations, and

in all of them, family and friends have been her bedrocks of love and support. When she

grows up, she wants to retire and play golf year-round, maybe where it's not so hot.

Let us send Maria off for this coming year with our thoughts and prayers.

THANK YOU TO OUR USHERS:

Lois Legge, head usher; Gloria Villa, Ann and Felipe De Las Pozas

STEWARDSHIP 2017

The Stewardship Team, thinking about the 200th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing 95

theses to the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral calling for change in the church, wondered

what changes we as members of Gables UCC would nail to our giant wooden doors

today? So they invite you to make your own Martin Luther moment by attending one of

the many sessions offered throughout August and September and share with them what is

important to you about the church and your dreams for its future.
