When do you know you REALLY have genu-
ine faith? When the heat is on. The oppressive
summertime heat we experienced a few weeks
ago should have refined our focus to maintain a
cooler perspective. Spiritually speaking, when
life circumstances are at a fever pitch you see
more clearly the condition of your heart and
faith. Hebrews 11: 1 defines faith in this way:
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
the conviction of things not seen.” Too often I
struggle to see beyond a challenging situation.
I recall a time when I helped lead a mission trip
to Mexico. My father was traveling with our
group. On our way, we were traveling through a
mountainous desert in West Texas on a very hot
day when my father’s van broke down. We had
a large group of youth and adults hungering to
get something to eat in a town about 100 miles
away. The kids started to really fuss and nag as
we waited for a tow truck. I started to snap at
them in anger as I got anxious about being be-
hind schedule. And in those frustrating mo-
ments I’ll never forget my father’s sobering
counsel. He said, “If our faith is not good here,
it is of little good anywhere.”
His words convicted me then and they challenge
me now to really embrace “things hoped for”
when the heat is on. And when it seems cool-
headed comfort is beyond my comprehension, I
find strength from another overheated soul
found in scripture who simply cried out to Je-
sus, “I believe; help my unbelief.” Whatever
you lack in faith, just your honest asking is
enough faith for the Lord to work with.
Confirmation: Faith confirmed in our young people.
Speaking of strengthening faith, we want to prepare young hearts to begin thinking of Confirmation.
We encourage all youth entering seventh grade this year to consider signing up. We will have an
information meeting for parents and youth on Sunday, August 11, right after our worship
service at 10 am. The plan is to offer classes led by my wife, Beth and myself during the Sunday School
hour, beginning on September 15 and running through the school year to late spring, We are planning
a few “field trip” experiences and local ministry opportunities to help grow and express our faith!
Give me a call if interested
Connection: Faith conveyed to our community.
We continually are trying to find ways to connect and convey our faith in outreach to our community.
In our immediate area, the Leeds area, please pay attention to the notices in this newsletter about
community events. Like the National Night Out 2019 to be held at Leeds Park,
Tues. Aug, 6, 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

“Summer Rain” Oh, what is so pure as the glad summer rain, That falls on the grass where the sunlight has lain? And what is so fair as the flowers that lie All bathed in the tears of the soft summer sky? The blue of the heavens is dimmed by the rain That wears away sorrow and washes out pain; But we know that the flowers we cherish would die Were it not for the tears of the cloud-laden sky. The rose is the sweeter when kissed by the rain, And hearts are the dearer where sorrow has lain; The sky is the fairer that rain-clouds have swept, And no eyes are so bright as the eyes that have wept. —Fannie Sherrick

Fifty years ago this summer, as the Woodstock Festival in
upstate New York became a symbol of the countercultural
movement, another groundswell was occurring: The Jesus
Movement. In 1970, teenager Greg Laurie was baptized
after a bunch of “Jesus freaks” introduced him to the Savior.
The lost kid whose mom had been divorced seven times
finally felt part of a family.
Laurie, now pastor of a megachurch and author of Jesus
Revolution (Baker Books), says the Millennial generation is
ripe for another major faith movement. During a time of
division and unrest that mirrors the late ’60s, people are
longing for what’s “real” and relational, he writes. Our
“weary, chaotic, selfie-saturated culture” needs “a big,
ravishing, transcendent and transformational vision of who
God really is,” adds Laurie. “That’s what happened fifty
years ago. It can happen again today.”
