Welcome to Waliki's 2005 Collection

In 1992, Rebecca Stone-Miller began the introduction for her book 'To weave for the Sun' with these words:

"It is well known, that the Spanish invaders of the Americas, known as the conquistadores ('conquerors'), valuedgold above all else. (...) To the Inca, who ruled the Andes of South America, territorially the largest empire in therenaissance world, it was the fiber arts that took precedence over other media. As proof, the Incas' first gifts tothe European strangers were made of camelid fiber and cotton, not of gold and silver.The Incas who offered textiles as their most prized possessions were but the capstone to thousands of years ofhigh culture in the rugged and inhospitable Andes. (...) In fact, fiber objects have been preserved archeologicallyfor nearly ten thousand years, that is, since the first evidence of human occupation in western South America.

A surprisingly large number of extremely elaborated fabrics still exist, spanning from about 3000 B.C. to thepresent. They form the longest continuous textile record in world history."

It is almost impossible to find better words than these for our 2005 Collection. This new collection of fine alpacaknitwear is dedicated to a textile tradition that is still alive in our times. Our crafters translate ancient symbols andtextile art into contemporary alpaca knitwear.

To do this we re-discovered the beauty of the color schemes of several major textile traditions in the pre-ColumbianAndes like Nasca, Paracas, Aymara, Rimac and Chancay. Most studies of the textile art in these cultures have beenconcerned with technical or symbolic details. By focusing, on the colors and color proportions, Waliki has foundan amazingly modern expression in the coloring process. These colorways are coordinated with modern patternsbased primarily on traditional textile patterns from Bolivia.

The products in this new collection keep alive the ancient Andean textile tradition and transform it into a moderncultural expression.

AymaraFor thousands of years the Aymara have created a rainbow

of colors for their garments from the plants, minerals and

insects in their environment. The tones were usually rich

and deep, yet occasionally so bright in general brant as

to be almost electric.

In 1983, during excavations at the archeological site ofPacatnamu, 125 miniature textiles were recovered. Thesetextiles range in size from 17 x 20 cm to 26 x 27 cm.Because of the small size, most of the miniature textileshave a more geometrical design than larger size garments.This process of graphic abstraction fascinated us. We usedone of the designs for this garment. It is named after the"Campa" women in the Pacatnamu area who are creatingminiature textiles even today.

As soft ascashmere,alpaca iswarmer, lighterand strongerthan wool.

Alpaca fiber is one of the most luxurious fibersin the world. It combines many positivecommercial attributes into one valuable fiber.As soft as cashmere, it is warmer, lighter andstronger than wool. It is shorn from the animalwithout causing them any harm.

Alpacas produce fiber in 22 natural colors,more than any other fiber-producing animal! Ranging from pure white through a range offawns, browns, grays, and blacks, alpaca fibercan be blended to produce a wide array ofearth tones or it can be dyed to produce thebright colors used in many of the WALIKIpieces.

Because it contains no lanolin alpaca fiber isnaturally hypoallergenic. It is also breathablewith an insulating nature useful in both cooland warm temperatures. One of the manyadvantages of alpaca fiber is its ease ofmaintenance. Grease and oil do not stain alpacaas easily as other natural fibers. Due to naturalability of alpaca fiber to repel water, spills caneasily be blotted up. Alpaca fiber naturallyreduces static electricity and rarely pills dueto the makeup of the fiber.

The finest grade of alpaca fiber called BabyAlpaca is hand selected immediately after theshearing. Baby Alpaca combines all theextraordinary characteristics of alpaca hairwith an unbeatable softness. The 2005 WALIKIcollection utilizes Baby Alpaca in two forms:100% pure alpaca for the finest plain colorknitwear and in a wonderful blend with silkthat gives the yarn a special sheen.

It is in the sense ofquality where thename WALIKIbecomes theprogram. In thelanguage of theAymara, "waliki"stands for "good".

WALIKI - A social enterprise

"A social enterprise", one of the founders explains, "utilizes themeans of an enterprise to remedy a social grievance." Thisgrievance was clear from the beginning. In Bolivia where morethan half the population has to work for its income in a veryuncertain economy, access to health care, old-age benefits andeducation are limited. Almost two thirds of the population "barelyscrapes by". WALIKI's primary goal is to create as many securejobs as possible. WALIKI utilizes 21 decentralized workshops andone central workshop to produce its high-quality textiles thatare sold throughout the world.It is in the workshops where the name WALIKI becomes theactual program. In the language of the Aymara, "waliki" standsfor "good", i.e. good with a view to quality. The Aymara werethe original inhabitants of the high Andes and their descendantsstill make up the majority of the population. Their textile traditionis held in esteem and has been further developed by WALIKI.True to its meaning, WALIKI is synonymous with products thatare very good, beautiful, useful and everlasting.

For this reason, WALIKI was chosen as one of the worldwideprojects of the World Exhibition EXPO 2000 under the subject"The Future of Work". In 2004, WALIKI received certification asa Fair Trade Company (ATO TÜV) by the German Association ofFair Trade Retailers.

53201ES Headband HUARIThis headband is a knitted copy of a woven headbandthat was made by an anonymous Andean craftersomewhere between A.D. 500 and 800. Thisheadband is not only a technical masterpiece, butalso an exceptional example of Andean art.

We dedicate the HUARI headband as the signatureitem of the 2005 collection to our knitters andweavers. This edition of headbands is limited to1000 pieces.
