Ways of acquiring a production crew

Rotating small groups of students allows you to conduct a curriculum-based class, and gives more students the opportunity to learn video production.

The disadvantage you will find is that you will be continually training students on the procedures of video production. This may discover the scope of the growth opportunities to be limited due to the limited instructional time with each group.

Each student should complete a student survey at the beginning of their rotation.

Creating Show FormatCreating Show Format

When determining what to include in the TV show format, variety of content must have structure and duplicability. In essence, in your absence, the show should be able to air smoothly through the guidance of a written format.

Structuring daily topics allows for advance planning of content. A segment can be reserved for spontaneous announcements.

Scripting Dialog

Placing a script on cue cards or a teleprompter can help with the structure and control of the TV show. However, it reduces spontaneity and energy from the on-camera talent.

Sample Script

Good morning and welcome to another day at Graham Elementary.

I’m ______________ and today is _(Science Tuesday).

But before we get to that we have some news you can use!

____________, what’s our weather look like today? (weather read)

And, ____________, how about lunch? (lunch read)

_____________, tell us something funny! (joke read)

Okay! Now it’s time for _(Science Tuesday). (teacher-lead).

Now let’s take a Character Moment. Here’s Mrs. Barreto….

Camera Operation Tips

Camera operation is vitally important to the professional look of a TV production. Novice camera operators have a tendency to use too much camera movement during a broadcast. This includes zooming in and out of a shot and panning the camera side to side.

The best way to encourage quality camera operation is to insist upon keeping camera movement to a minimum during the broadcast. Encourage students to position the camera cropping while the camera is off-line. Once the camera is being broadcast, the student should keep the shot as still as possible.

Cropping Tips

The tendency of the camera operator is to put the head in the middle of the viewfinder. The correct composition is to keep the head in the top quarter of the screen. Typically there is nothing interesting to look at above the head. This is a good rule of thumb for any composition- close-up to wide shots.

Videotape Review

Set aside five minutes to review the videotaped broadcast. It is difficult to spot all mistakes that have occurred during a broadcast. Reviewing the videotape is a great learning experience, where students can be praised for thoughtful execution as well as observing helpful correction.

Tips & TricksTips & Tricks

Finding Relevant Content

Finding relevant content is simple. Ask for a curriculum chart/calendar from your school administrator. Each grade level should be following a weekly chart of topics for each area of the curriculum. Therefore, if you choose to focus on Math Monday, Science Tuesday, Reading Wednesday, Social Studies Thursday and Writing Friday, then finding relevant content is simple.

Utilizing the Internet

Websites are great resources to expound upon a topic. They also provide an interactive element that can be broadcast. Consider notifying classroom teachers of your internet resources in advance, so they can integrate these websites into their lesson plans.
