WELCOME TO UCSD

UCSD is part of South Devon College and, like the College, everything is centred on your experience as a student and helping you make the most of your time here. We have an unwavering passion for learning, and take great pride in our programmes of study. We offer a wide range of opportunities that help you progress into employment and give you the platform to excel.

We received a positive report from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) based on results from a four-day Higher Education Review with a range of good practices identified as well as two commendations.

UCSD has been awarded ‘Gold’, the highest level possible, by the Teaching Excellence Framework, which recognises outstanding teaching and support for students within our university-level curriculum.

We maintain the very highest academic standards and support your personal development, as well as your wider graduate skills. UCSD has high levels of student satisfaction and we work incredibly closely with our students to meet your needs. So you can be sure that we will meet your needs as an individual and take your views into account.

When you graduate, you’ll gain a prestigious qualification from an institution that’s widely recognised by employers and other universities. You’ll also have the opportunity to progress to the third year of an associated course, either here at UCSD, at the University of Plymouth, or elsewhere.

We take great pride in the success of our students. Our tutors and lecturers find no greater satisfaction than seeing our past students go on to achieve great and remarkable things, which happens year after year.

UCSD continues to expand and grow its higher education provision, increasing the numbers of foundation degrees, bachelor’s degrees, as well as a higher degree apprenticeship provision.

So, please do come and visit our campus and meet our friendly and professional team by attending one of our open days or information events and see for yourself how we can help shape your future. I’m confident that you’ll be impressed by everything we have to offer, and will see that we can support you to succeed. Thank you, once again, for considering us, and I look forward to welcoming you in September 2021.

I’m delighted to welcome you to the University Centre South Devon (UCSD) Prospectus for 2021. You’ve made an excellent choice in considering us for your higher level studies.

1 LOCATION

We work extremely closely with local businesses and organisations to ensure our curriculum remains relevant to future employment opportunities. Our programmes are designed with their input, so the skills you learn are in high demand in industry and will drastically increase your job prospects when you graduate.

Our work with employers helps talent realise its potential here in South Devon, making it the cornerstone of economic growth in the local economy. With a multitude of projects planned or already underway in the South West, there have never been more opportunities for graduates, as businesses seek skilled practitioners in the local area.

For instance, Animal Science students have worked with local zoos, Digital and Media students have developed live briefs for local enterprises such as Living Coasts; and Construction students have participated in restoration projects at heritage sites.

Our curriculum has opportunities for work experience so you can develop practical skills, as well as making valuable contacts with employers to get an early foothold in industry.

If you’re local to Torbay, studying at home could save you money by reducing your living, travel and rent costs. It means you won’t have to put your life on hold while you’re studying, and makes getting a degree convenient, manageable, and affordable. You’ll still be getting a university experience, but with the benefit of being able to balance your family, work, and social commitments.

You’ll also be able to enjoy access to South Devon College’s brand new Sports Centre and Hi Tech & Digital Centre, as well as our dedicated University Centre.

SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE SPORTS CENTRE

The brand new facility comprises a latest generation, all weather 3G pitch, changing rooms, community room, teaching space, and a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) pitch. It will act as a central sports hub for College students as well as inspiring residents across South Devon to use the facilities for a wide range of sports and activities including football, basketball and netball.

HI TECH & DIGITAL CENTRE

The Centre will give students the skills that employers are looking for to grow and support a range of important local hi-tech industries such as: electronics, lasers, fibre, satellite and communications, aerospace, marine, medical, and big data analytics. The offer will also extend to creative industries, including gaming, app design, digital design, film and digital media, smart clothing and textiles, and many others.

Studying at UCSD gives you the opportunity to gain a prestigious qualification in the heart of Torbay, ensuring you not only achieve your ambitions, but also immerse yourself in South Devon’s beautiful coast and countryside.

We offer a comprehensive range of services, including academic, pastoral, and financial support. From day one, you’ll know exactly who can help you and how.

PERSONAL TUTORS

Spending time with your tutor is paramount. Not just to your learning, but also to your personal and professional development. We pride ourselves on having smaller, more focused class sizes, as well as extensive one-to-one tutorials – giving you the chance to have dedicated contact time with your tutor and ensuring you always know what your next step will be.

Your personal tutor will support you with issues relating to your academic study as well as pastoral support and personal development. All our staff members are either active practitioners in their field of specialism, or have strong links within industry, making them perfectly placed to advise you on career and progression opportunities.

Our supportive and close-knit learning environment means tutors don’t just take an interest in your success at UCSD, but also in all of your future endeavours.

EMPLOYABILITY

Employability is at the core of the design and delivery of our courses. So when you graduate, you’ll have acquired higher level knowledge and transferable skills to help you enter employment or further study.

Within your programme, there will be opportunities for you to engage with employers and gain work-related experience, through activities such as live projects, placements, and industry visits.

We also offer a range of extra-curricular opportunities to enhance your employability, including employability-themed workshops, events, and a work experience bursary.

You can also seek one-to-one support with searching and applying for part-time and graduate vacancies; undertaking work experience and volunteering; and developing CVs and job applications.

DISABILITY AND WELLBEING

The health and wellbeing of all our students is important. We welcome students with physical, mental, or learning disabilities.

We’ll make reasonable adjustments to support you where necessary, providing assistance with access requests and needs. Our friendly support team will also give you guidance on additional financial support, such as the Disabled Students’ Allowance, and help you apply to ensure you can concentrate fully on your studies.

WORKSHOPS

At University Centre South Devon we understand that degree level study is a big step to take and preparing to study at this level can be daunting, which is why we have specialist academic skills trainer-facilitators to support you every step of the way.

Based in our Student Support Hub, the academic skills team support you individually or in group sessions to develop your academic skills. These skills can help with learning in the classroom through effective reading, time-management and note-taking, planning, researching, and writing assessments.

Every student should have dedicated, regular access to the support they need to graduate and achieve their goals. This is why we have an experienced team on hand to support you personally and professionally throughout your studies.

Travelling to UCSD is easy. We have ample parking at affordable rates, as well as excellent public transport links. We remain committed to providing equal opportunities for all, and can make reasonable adjustments to help support you where necessary.

So if you have any concerns or issues that you believe could impact your learning, we can work with you to create a tailored support plan.

If you’re responsible for young children, the site has access to Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-School, which offers affordable and high-quality childcare. Mama Bear’s provides childcare for children aged from three months to five years, so you can focus on your studies in the knowledge your child is cared for in a safe and friendly environment.

In short, our dedicated and extensive support services and networks mean we can remove barriers to your learning and give you the platform to excel in your chosen career.

BURSARIES

We’re committed to supporting our university students with a number of bursary packages, which you’ll receive if you meet particular criteria. Bursaries, which are not repaid, are awarded in addition to any grants, loans, or funding received through Student Finance England.

You could be eligible to receive up to £1000 bursary in your first year of study with us. This comprises a £200 UCSD bursary (for full-time and fee paying students) when you start your studies and an additional bursary of £800 depending on your personal circumstances.

The previous four reasons combine to give you an exceptional university learning experience, focused on your development and success. But don’t just take our word for it - take a look below at how UCSD has been evaluated by some of the industry’s most respected bodies.

TEF GOLD

UCSD has been awarded the highest rating of ‘Gold’ under the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), a system for recognising excellent teaching and learning in higher education.

The TEF assessment process is delivered by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The framework assesses higher education institutions against criteria, including drop-out rates and progression to highly skilled employment. It’s part of the government’s plan for raising standards in higher education. It also gives students more information so they can make informed decisions when deciding which university to attend.

These are the Teaching Excellence Framework’s five key findings:

e An exemplary approach to teaching contact hours, reflecting the need for increased contact in the transition stages, and developing greater independence in students as they progress

e An excellent educational culture to ensure staff have development opportunities to support them in delivering excellent HE teaching

e Exemplary processes for the development, review, and enhancement of its educational provision, and doing so in partnership with its student body, employers, and other local stakeholders

e Strong student engagement, linked to recognising that the student voice is critical and is considered at early stages in the delivery of modules

e Excellent employability support, with a focus on ensuring all students achieve positive outcomes

QUALITY ASSURANCE AGENCY FOR HIGHER EDUCATION (QAA)

UCSD was commended for its exceptional university provision, receiving a glowing report from a Higher Education Review by the QAA.

The report commended UCSD and identified a range of good practice. The commendations were for the ‘quality of student learning opportunities’ and the ‘enhancement of student learning opportunities’; while eight other areas of good practice were also highlighted.

NUS AWARDS

The Students’ Union was delighted to win the ‘Relationships and Partnerships’ Award at the NUS Awards 2018. This recognises UCSD’s commitment to relationships and connections among Students’ Union members and stakeholders.

The NUS Awards celebrate the work and dedication carried out by Students’ Unions across the country, including Students’ Unions officers and staff from both further and higher education and highlight activities from campaigning and diversity to education and student opportunities.

HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY CENTRE SOUTH DEVONUCSD has come a long way from its humble beginnings to the state-of-the-art surroundings students enjoy today.

On Monday 7th September 1931, the then-named South Devon Technical College, located at Teignmouth Road, Torquay, first opened its doors to 16 eager students taught by two teachers and the Principal at the time, Mr Smith.

By 1935, the College proudly recorded 1,200 students on its books. A notable year, the College held its first student open day and passed its first governing body inspection.

Continuing its development, the College established its first higher education programme in 1947, the initial Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Building, helping to lay the foundations for today’s UCSD.

Fast-forward to 1952, and the College boasted an expanding list of courses on offer with enrolment numbers exceeding 3,000 students.

The College grew to successfully establish itself as the focal point for further education providers in the South Devon area.

Across the next few decades, as technology advanced at an accelerated rate, the College continued to expand with the creation of various new fields of study. By the 1990s, the College adapted by rebranding to become the South Devon College we know today, with annual enrolment figures reaching over 15,000 students.

After 75 memorable years in Torquay, in 2006 the College moved to its modern and sizeable Paignton campus. This offered students a great increase in facilities such as an on-site gym, restaurant, and hair salon.

In 2011, the £8 million state-of-the-art University Centre building was officially opened. The innovative centre - positioned next to South Devon College’s

Paignton Campus - immediately gained awards for its design, achieving an excellent rating for its environmental credentials using photovoltaic and solar panels.

In 2016, the University Centre South Devon brand was launched to emphasise the quality and outstanding provision in its own right as a partner of South Devon College.

Today, the TEF gold-rated UCSD hosts over 750 students in the inclusive studying of university level degree programmes - in some cases validated through a strong partnership with other universities.

YOUR QUALIFICATION EXPLAINEDHIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE [HNC] – LEVEL 4

Higher National Certificates (HNCs) are vocational qualifications designed to develop practical and theoretical skills and knowledge. They focus on equipping you with a practical understanding of your chosen subject and can lead directly to employment in specific industries. They may also count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations. After successfully completing your HNC, you can progress onto the related foundation degrees at UCSD.

FOUNDATION DEGREE [FDA AND FDSC] – LEVEL 5

A foundation degree is a degree-level qualification that takes two years to complete, and is equivalent to the first two years of a traditional honours degree. Foundation degrees focus on relevant, work-based skills within a particular career route or profession, and are designed to increase employability and progression opportunities.

More and more people are recognising that foundation degrees are one of the quickest and most direct routes to the high-level vocational skills required in the working world. Because employers are involved in the development of foundation degree programmes, they ensure you’re ready for employment when you complete your studies.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE (BA [HONS] AND BSC [HONS]) – LEVEL 6

At the end of a foundation degree, you have the option to ‘top-up’ your qualification with a third year of study to convert it into a full honours degree. We offer a range of bachelor’s top-up courses for you to consider, or you may be able to progress to the University of Plymouth where you’ll be guaranteed an interview for an associated top-up course. Please note, there’s a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability.

A bachelor’s degree introduces you to new skills and research methods that employers will value, and is widely seen as a mark of intellectual and academic ability and potential in the employment market.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSWe consider a variety of qualifications and relevant experience, and assess every application on its own merit. So, even if you don’t meet the specified requirements, you may still be able to study with us.

BACHELOR’S DEGREES AND TOP-UP PROGRAMMES

To progress to a top-up bachelor’s degree programme, you’ll need 240 credits from a foundation degree or higher national diploma in a relevant subject area.

FOUNDATION DEGREE

As a guide, to receive an offer for a foundation degree, you’ll require a minimum of 48 UCAS points*. These points can be gained from A Levels, BTEC Nationals, Access to Higher Education Diplomas and equivalent qualifications. You’ll also require GCSE English at Grade 4/C and (Level 2) maths.

RECOGNISING PRIOR LEARNING

We welcome applications from students of all ages, regardless of previous academic achievements. We assess each student’s suitability individually and take into account previous experience.

This is why we give you the opportunity to use all of your prior learning and experience when you apply for a course. You can show this through statements from employers, personal development plans, and reflective commentaries.

So, if you don’t have the formal accreditation or qualifications required, but do have relevant past experience, you could still be accepted onto your chosen degree.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION AND RETURN TO LEARN

If you don’t feel quite ready for university study, an Access to Higher Education course may be perfect for you. These are intensive, one-year programmes that are designed to prepare you for studying at university level.

They can also update your academic skills if you’re returning to education, and provide the opportunity to fill any gaps in your application, such as retaking English and maths GCSEs if you didn’t originally achieve a 4/C grade or higher.

Return to Learn courses take slightly less time to complete, and are suitable for adults returning to education after an extended period of time. They’re designed to build your confidence and reintroduce you to academic study in a manageable and achievable way.

This will prepare you for an Access to Higher Education course and, subsequently, university study. If you are starting a course in 2020, the UCAS entry criteria are:

FUNDING AND FEES

We offer various bursary packages, as well as the full package of loan funding available from Student Finance England, so you can be comfortable with your decision to study with us.

BURSARIES

We’re committed to supporting our university students with a number of bursary packages, which you’ll receive if you meet particular criteria. Bursaries, which are not repaid, are awarded in addition to any grants, loans or funding received through Student Finance England.

You could be eligible to receive up to £1000 bursary in your first year of study with us. This comprises a £200 UCSD bursary (for full-time and fee paying students) when you start your studies and an additional bursary of £600 or £800, depending on your personal circumstances.

To receive an additional bursary you’ll need to accept UCSD as your firm offer, and make a bursary application with us directly. For more information and to see if you are eligible, visit sdc.careers/bursary.

TUITION FEES

You’re not expected to pay for your tuition immediately. Instead, your tuition is covered by a fee loan, which is paid directly to us on your behalf by Student Finance England. You’ll only be expected to begin repaying this loan when you’ve completed your studies and are earning over £25,725 per year.

Fees for students joining us in 2021 are currently under review, but as a guide, our tuition fees for full-time students in 2020/21 were £8,400 per year.

Please note that if you are progressing to study at the University of Plymouth after successfully completing a course with us, the fees for the course you are progressing to will be different from your UCSD course fees. Please check with the university for up-to-date fees for the course you’re interested in.

MAINTENANCE LOAN

The maintenance loan is intended to help you with living costs during your studies. The basic rate of maintenance loan doesn’t depend on your household income, unless you apply for more. The loan has to be paid back but not until your income is over £25,725 a year. The maximum loan available for students (living away from home and studying outside of London) in 2020/21 was £9,203 per year. For those living in the parental home during their studies it was £7,747*.

LIVING COST (MAINTENANCE) LOANS

DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCES

Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) are available to students who require extra support as a direct result of a disability. This includes a mental health condition or specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia or dyspraxia. DSAs do not depend on household income.

CHILDCARE FUNDING

This helps with childcare costs for students with dependent children in registered or approved childcare. The children must be aged under 15 at the beginning of the academic year. Depending on household income, you can apply for 85% of your actual childcare costs during term times and holidays.

PARENTS’ LEARNING ALLOWANCES

Parents’ Learning Allowances (PLAs) help with course-related costs if you have dependent children.

More information on this extra help can be found at gov.uk/studentfinance.

REPAYMENTS

You won’t repay your fee or maintenance loan until you’re earning more than £25,725 per year. If you’re earning less than this you won’t need to pay anything. Repayments begin in the April after you graduate, but only if you meet the financial criteria.

Repayments are charged at a rate of 9% of any additional salary over the £25,725 threshold. Interest is charged from the day the first payment is made to you until the loan is repaid or written off. Any loan remaining after 30 years is written off entirely.

For example, if you’re earning £30,000 after you graduate, you’ll make repayments on the £4,275 above the £25,725 threshold. The amount you pay is calculated as 9% of this income, meaning you would repay £384.75 per year, or £7.40 a week.

The table below is a useful reference to see how much you can expect to repay on various incomes.
