Welcome to Tullamore!Message from the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen T.D.

As a local public representative for Offaly I am delighted to avail of this opportunity to warmly welcome all those who are visiting us here, either for business or pleasure.

We believe we have much to offer visitors with many local sights of historical significance and first-class accommodation available. In addition, the area offers a tranquil landscape for both visitors to Ireland and those seeking a break at home with sailing, fishing, sporting and music all in abundance throughout the region. The inland corridor, which includes some of our most beautiful countryside and waterways, offers a taste of a traditional, relatively unexplored Ireland.

For those who wish to do business here, we are ideally located for conferences and seminars for those who have to travel from all four corners of the country. The business facilities available are second to none and you will find welcome and helpful assistance from all those in the hospitality sector.

You can be assured of a good time, good food and good ‘craic’ during your stay and please take the time to enjoy some of our wonderful tourist attractions we have on offer here in Tullamore and the wider Midlands.

Brian Cowen T.D.Taoiseach

Early evidence of human habitation in Ireland leads us back over 8,000 years ago to the shores of Lough Boora, only twenty minutes from Tullamore. Tullamore today has a population of some 13,000 and is the county town of Offaly and an important centre for Midland businesses.

The town is now famous throughout the world for it’s Tullamore Dew whiskey and in former years for its association with Irish Mist liqueur. It’s history is encapsulated in a hands-on exhibition in the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre.

Tullamore occupies a central position in County Offaly and has been the capital town since 1832. The town is dissected by the Tullamore River and the Grand Canal. To the north is the gravel ridge, the Eiscir Riada, known locally as the Arden Hills. To the south lie the Slieve Bloom mountains while to the east and west are flat boglands relieved only on the eastern side by the stump of an extinct volcano now known as Croghan Hill.

The name Tullamore is derived from the Irish ‘An Tulach Mhór’ meaning ‘the Big Hill’. The area lies in the ancient district of ‘Fear Ceall’ which has been translated as ‘men of the woods’ or ‘men of the churches’ and the region is famous for its monastic centres at Clonmacnois, Durrow, Rahan, Lynally, Clareen and Birr. The original monastery at Durrow, just outside Tullamore was founded by Saint Columba in 553.

Srah Castle, which dates back to 1588, was the first significant building in Tullamore and is located on the banks of the more recently constructed Grand Canal. The district was granted to the Moore family in the course of the Offaly plantation and they moved to Tullamore from their home at Croghan Castle in the early 1700s. Through political influence, they were able to secure a barrack to house 100 foot soldiers in 1716, which provided an impetus to business. In 1754 Charles Moore, now Lord Tullamore, gave a lease for a factory building for the linen business and by the 1780s Offaly was a leading county for the manufacture of linen

outside of Ulster.

On Charles Moore’s death in 1764 the property passed first to his sister’s husband, John Bury of Shannongrove, Limerick, who died soon after in a bathing accident at Ringsend, Dublin. The Tullamore property, together

with Limerick and Dublin estates, then passed to Moore’s nephew, Charles William Bury, an infant of six months.

The world’s first aviation disaster, The Great Balloon Fire of Tullamore, which coincided with the Charles William Bury’s coming of age celebrations in 1785, was caused by an air balloon catching fire. This led to destruction of the Patrick Street area. The first Earl of Charleville (of the 2nd creation) presided over the fortunes of Tullamore from his coming of age in 1785 to his death 50 years later. Charleville Forest Castle, designed by Francis Johnston in 1798 and constructed between 1800 and 1812, is widely recognised as the finest example of Gothic revival architecture in the country. Tullamore, through petitioning the Irish House of Commons, finally achieved designation of county town status in 1833. The County Jail (Pain Brothers) was built in Tullamore in 1826 and the County Courthouse (J.B. Keane) in 1835.

The Tullamore Town Council is located in ‘Acres Hall’ which was built by Thomas Acres in 1786.

The Grand Canal reached Tullamore in 1798 and was completed to the Shannon in 1804. The canal passenger traffic led to the building of Tullamore’s second hotel in 1801. The waterway system facilitated the transport of turf, bricks, grain for malting and limestone from the local quarries by canal boat to Dublin and further afield. The movement of goods and people improved further when the rail arrived in 1854.The Charleville influence declined after the Great Famine in the 1840’s and the earldom was extinguished with the death of the fifth earl in 1874. The Tullamore distillery business expanded in the 1870s and again after 1900 when D.E. Williams developed the Tullamore Dew brand. Most recently the town is entering into a new and exciting phase of development, being part of a linked Midland Gateway which sees the towns of Athlone, Mullingar and Tullamore working collectively to create future history for their catchment population of over 340,000 people.Recent years have seen the relocation to Tullamore of various Government departments and the development of several business parks, extensive Midland Regional Hospital, Midland Court Service and expansive town park facilities including water features, children’s playground, skateboarding and bowls arena.Tullamore’s history is encapsulated in an extensive exhibition at the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre which provides daily guided tours all year around.

Monastic OffalyOffaly for long known as the “Faithful County” may soon be re-christened the “Monastic County”.

Offaly’s early Christian monastic heritage is being rediscovered and presented to locals and visitors in a fresh way. Our government has purchased Durrow Abbey, less than three miles from Tullamore, the site of Columcille’s 6th century monastery and 10th century Durrow High Cross. Durrow is most famously associated

with the Book of Durrow, an illustrated 7th century gospels manuscript which can be viewed in Trinity College, Dublin. Also close to Tullamore are monasteries at Killeigh (5th century), Rahan (6th century) and Lynally (6th century). Boher church, associated with Lemanaghan (7th century), contains the finest item on public display outside the National Museum. St. Manchin’s Shrine, a magnificent 12th century reliquary with bronze ornamentation has been in the area for over 700 years. It also contains beautiful stained glass windows by Harry Clarke.Clonmacnoise (6th century) with it’s Heritage Centre on the banks of the river Shannon is the jewel in the crown with three High Crosses, decorated Grave Slabs (600+), round tower, churches and Pilgrim’s Way. For anyone, with even a passing interest in history, this is a number one site to visit. Because of Offaly’s monastic treasures - archaeological, architectural, artistic and spiritual, it is probably unfair to mention one place above the other. However, for those people who like to take a map, plan their own trip, get lost and meet the natives – here

is a additional list of sites of monastic interest (with century founding date).

Birr (6th), Kinnitty (6th), Letter (Cadamstown) (6th), Drumcullen (6th), Seir Kieran (5th), Tihilly (7th), Gallen(Ferbane) (5th), Clonsast (7th), Croghan Hill (5th), Wheery (5th), Tisaran (7th), Banagher (6th ),

Clonfert (6th), Kilcomin (7th).

Slieve Bloom Environment ParkSlieve Bloom Mountains

The south midlands of Ireland is visually dominated by the Slieve Bloom mountains, resting place of it’s namesake the great warrior Bladhma and birthplace of the legendary Finn McCool. Covering an area over 150,000 hectares and set in the ancient kingdom of the O’Carroll Clan, these beautiful rolling hills offer a peaceful retreat from the bustling modern world. The highest point, Ard Éirinn or “height of Ireland”, is just over 529 metres high and the short

hike from Fanning’s Pass is worth the trek for extensive panoramic views across the Midlands. Curvaceous valleys, blanket bog, lush green forest, waterfalls and clear babbling streams make up various looped trails to suit all levels of fitness, whether walking, biking or on horseback. This un-spoilt natural

amenity is well served by picnic areas, peaceful villages and various signed scenic drives. The rich diversity of geological features, it’s natural flaura and fauna will entice the visitor to return throughout the changing seasons.
