FIRST READINGR: The first reading for the thirteenth

Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter five of Isaiah beginning at verse one.

Isaiah 5:1-7 CEVThe song of the vineyard

Page 34: Welcome to trinity

Isaiah 5:1-7 The LORD said: I will sing a song about my friend's

vineyard that was on the side of a fertile hill.

Page 35: Welcome to trinity

Isaiah 5:1-7 2My friend dug the ground, removed the

stones, and planted the best vines. He built a watchtower and dug a pit in rocky ground for pressing the grapes. He hoped they would be sweet, but bitter grapes were all it produced.

Page 36: Welcome to trinity

Isaiah 5:1-7 3Listen, people of Jerusalem and of

Judah! You be the judge of me and my vineyard. 4What more could I have done for my vineyard?

I hoped for sweet grapes, but bitter grapes were all that grew. 5Now I will let you know what I am going to do. I will cut down the hedge and tear down the wall.

Page 37: Welcome to trinity

Isaiah 5:1-7 My vineyard will be trampled and left in

ruins. 6It will turn into a desert, neither pruned nor hoed; it will be covered with thorns and briars. I will command the clouds not to send rain.

7I am the LORD All-Powerful! Israel is the vineyard, and Judah is the garden I tended with care.

Page 38: Welcome to trinity

Isaiah 5:1-7 I had hoped for honesty and for justice,

but dishonesty and cries for mercy were all I found.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Page 39: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: The Psalm is Psalm 80

1Shepherd of Israel, you lead the descendants of Joseph, and you sit on your throne above the winged creatures. Listen to our prayer and let your light shine

C: 2for the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Save us by your power.

Page 40: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: 8We were like a grapevine you

brought out of Egypt. You chased other nations away and planted us here.

C: 9Then you cleared the ground, and we put our roots deep, spreading over the land.

Page 41: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: 10Shade from this vine covered the

mountains. Its branches climbed the mighty cedars 11and stretched to the sea; its new growth reached to the river.

C: 12Our LORD, why have you torn down the wall from around the vineyard? You let everyone who walks by pick the grapes.

Page 42: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: 13Now the vine is gobbled down by

pigs from the forest and other wild animals.

C: 14God All-Powerful, please do something! Look down from heaven and see what's happening to this vine.

Page 43: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: 15With your own hands you planted

its roots, and you raised it as your very own.

C: 16Enemies chopped the vine down and set it on fire. Now show your anger and destroy them.

Page 44: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: 17But help the one who sits at your

right side, the one you raised to be your own.

C: 18Then we will never turn away. Put new life into us, and we will worship you.

Page 45: Welcome to trinity

Psalm 80:1,2,8-19 CEV  R: 19LORD God All-Powerful, make us

strong again! Smile on us and save us.

C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever.

Amen.

Page 46: Welcome to trinity

SECOND READINGR: The second reading is written in

Chapters eleven and twelve of Hebrews beginning at verse twenty nine.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 CEVThe great cloud of witnesses

Page 47: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:229Because of their faith, the people

walked through the Red Sea on dry land. But when the Egyptians tried to do it, they were drowned

30God's people had faith, and when they had walked around the city of Jericho for seven days, its walls fell down.

Page 48: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:231Rahab had been a prostitute, but she

had faith and welcomed the spies. So she wasn't killed with the people who disobeyed.

Page 49: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:232What else can I say? There isn't

enough time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets 33Their faith helped them conquer kingdoms, and because they did right, God made promises to them.

Page 50: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2They closed the jaws of lions 34and

put out raging fires and escaped from the swords of their enemies. Although they were weak, they were given the strength and power to chase foreign armies away. 35Some women received their loved ones back from death.

Page 51: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2Many of these people were tortured,

but they refused to be released. They were sure that they would get a better reward when the dead are raised to life. 36Others were made fun of and beaten with whips, and some were chained in jail. 37Still others were stoned to death or sawed in two or killed with swords.

Page 52: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2Some had nothing but sheep skins or

goat skins to wear. They were poor, mistreated, and tortured.

38The world did not deserve these good people, who had to wander in deserts and on mountains and had to live in caves and holes in the ground.

Page 53: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:239All of them pleased God because of

their faith! But still they died without being given what had been promised.

Such a large crowd of witnesses is all around us!

Page 54: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2So we must get rid of everything that

slows us down, especially the sin that just won't let go. And we must be determined to run the race that is ahead of us. 2We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete.

Page 55: Welcome to trinity

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2He endured the shame of being nailed

to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God's throne!

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Page 56: Welcome to trinity

Alleluia VERSE  C: Alleluia, alleluia. My word is like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock

in pieces.Alleluia.

GOSPELM: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter

twelve of St. Luke beginning at verse forty nine.

C: Glory be to You O Lord

Luke 12:49-56 CEV Jesus the cause of division

Page 58: Welcome to trinity

Luke 12:49-5649I came to set fire to the earth, and I

wish it were already on fire! 50I am going to be put to a hard test. And

I will have to suffer a lot of pain until it is over.

Page 59: Welcome to trinity

Luke 12:49-5651Do you think that I came to bring peace

to earth? No indeed! I came to make people choose sides. 52A family of five will be divided, with two of them against the other three. 53Fathers and sons will turn against one another, and mothers and daughters will do the same. Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law will also turn against each other.

Page 60: Welcome to trinity

Luke 12:49-5654Jesus said to all the people: As soon

as you see a cloud coming up in the west, you say, "It's going to rain," and it does. 55When the south wind blows, you say, "It's going to get hot," and it does.

Page 61: Welcome to trinity

Luke 12:49-5656Are you trying to fool someone? You

can predict the weather by looking at the earth and sky, but you don't really know what's going on right now.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise be to You O Christ.
