FIRST READINGR: The first reading for the thirteenth

Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter five of Isaiah beginning at verse one.

Isaiah 5:1-7 The LORD said: I will sing a song about my friend's

vineyard that was on the side of a fertile hill.

Isaiah 5:1-7 2My friend dug the ground, removed the

stones, and planted the best vines. He built a watchtower and dug a pit in rocky ground for pressing the grapes. He hoped they would be sweet, but bitter grapes were all it produced.

Isaiah 5:1-7 3Listen, people of Jerusalem and of

Judah! You be the judge of me and my vineyard. 4What more could I have done for my vineyard?

I hoped for sweet grapes, but bitter grapes were all that grew. 5Now I will let you know what I am going to do. I will cut down the hedge and tear down the wall.

Isaiah 5:1-7 My vineyard will be trampled and left in

ruins. 6It will turn into a desert, neither pruned nor hoed; it will be covered with thorns and briars. I will command the clouds not to send rain.

7I am the LORD All-Powerful! Israel is the vineyard, and Judah is the garden I tended with care.

Isaiah 5:1-7 I had hoped for honesty and for justice,

but dishonesty and cries for mercy were all I found.

SECOND READINGR: The second reading is written in

Chapters eleven and twelve of Hebrews beginning at verse twenty nine.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:229Because of their faith, the people

walked through the Red Sea on dry land. But when the Egyptians tried to do it, they were drowned

30God's people had faith, and when they had walked around the city of Jericho for seven days, its walls fell down.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:231Rahab had been a prostitute, but she

had faith and welcomed the spies. So she wasn't killed with the people who disobeyed.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:232What else can I say? There isn't

enough time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets 33Their faith helped them conquer kingdoms, and because they did right, God made promises to them.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2They closed the jaws of lions 34and

put out raging fires and escaped from the swords of their enemies. Although they were weak, they were given the strength and power to chase foreign armies away. 35Some women received their loved ones back from death.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2Many of these people were tortured,

but they refused to be released. They were sure that they would get a better reward when the dead are raised to life. 36Others were made fun of and beaten with whips, and some were chained in jail. 37Still others were stoned to death or sawed in two or killed with swords.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2Some had nothing but sheep skins or

goat skins to wear. They were poor, mistreated, and tortured.

38The world did not deserve these good people, who had to wander in deserts and on mountains and had to live in caves and holes in the ground.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:239All of them pleased God because of

their faith! But still they died without being given what had been promised.

Such a large crowd of witnesses is all around us!

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2So we must get rid of everything that

slows us down, especially the sin that just won't let go. And we must be determined to run the race that is ahead of us. 2We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete.

Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2He endured the shame of being nailed

to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God's throne!

Luke 12:49-5649I came to set fire to the earth, and I

wish it were already on fire! 50I am going to be put to a hard test. And

I will have to suffer a lot of pain until it is over.

Luke 12:49-5651Do you think that I came to bring peace

to earth? No indeed! I came to make people choose sides. 52A family of five will be divided, with two of them against the other three. 53Fathers and sons will turn against one another, and mothers and daughters will do the same. Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law will also turn against each other.

Luke 12:49-5654Jesus said to all the people: As soon

as you see a cloud coming up in the west, you say, "It's going to rain," and it does. 55When the south wind blows, you say, "It's going to get hot," and it does.

Luke 12:49-5656Are you trying to fool someone? You

can predict the weather by looking at the earth and sky, but you don't really know what's going on right now.
