1 THESSALONIANS 3:9-13 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon

This Morning’s Music

Happy New Year! Richard Farrant (1530-1580) was a composer, organist, playwright and theatrical producer chiefly remembered today for his small but significant contribution to Anglican church music. The text for this morning’s gradual is taken directly from our psalm and focuses on the penitential aspect of Advent. The “pointed” text for the psalm is included in the bulletin and you are encour-aged to sing it with the choir. One of the quintessential musi-cal/poetic texts associated with Advent is Thomas Campion’s “Never Weather-beaten Sail, heard this morning in an ar-rangement by Charles Wood. Wood was one of fifty inaugural class members of the Royal Col-lege of Music, studying composi-tion with Charles Villiers Stan-ford and Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. After Stanford died, Wood

assumed his mentor’s vacant role as University of Cambridge Profes-sor of Music in 1924. He is chiefly remembered for his Anglican church music. All his music demonstrates fastidious craftsmanship and a supreme mastery of the genre. This is especially true of his choral works which sometimes include unison sections and have stir-ring organ accompaniments, conveying a satisfying warmth and rich-ness of emotional expression appropriate to his carefully chosen texts. The composer of “A Grateful Heart,” Mary Plumstead, spent most of her life in Devon and Cornwall. Despite writing many beautiful songs she never really came to great prominence as a composer in her own lifetime. This may be due to the small number of her songs that were actually published, or because she did not set out to gain wider recog-nition in London. This morning’s benediction is now firmly estab-lished in the repertoire of many choirs and is considered a small gem of an anthem.

Cathedral Outreach...of another kind

Rev. Helen, who, among many other duties, co-ordinates our Cathe-dral Outreach programs, is about to engage in another form of out-reach from the Cathedral. Beginning December 1st she will be Priest-in-Charge of the Parish of Faulkland/Purcell's Cove. This 3 month appointment will enable this parish time to envision their future fol-lowing the resignation and move of their Rector, The Rev. Allan Frye. Allan and his wife, The Rev. Dianna Brett-Frye, are now shar-ing in a parish ministry in Eastern Newfoundland. Helen’s ministry there will consist of 3 Sunday’s per month (and emergency pastoral care) so she will continue her weekday activities in and through the Cathedral and the occasional 8 am Sunday ser-vice. We wish her every blessing as she shares her skills and leader-ship with one of our neighbouring parishes.

AST Graduate Project – call for participants

Helen Chandler, final-year AST student, is undertaking a graduate project on the subject of embodied worship. Helen is exploring the qualitative research question, “How does the intentional involvement of sights, sound, smells and movement impact a person’s worship ex-perience?” Several participants will be asked questions about their experience of worship. Would you be willing to be one of Helen’s par-ticipants? There are no special requirements – if you have ever been in worship, you are eligible! The interview will take about 45 min-utes; participants will not be named, your participation will be confi-dential. The Saint Catherine’s Group

Is collecting toys, knitted items for children, and makeup & toiletries for teens for St. Mark’s Ward 5 Neighborhood Centre. White Ribbon Resolution in the NS Legislative Assembly

A resolution regarding the White Ribbon Campaign was passed in the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly on Friday, November 23, 2012, thanks to Mr. Andrew Younger and the joint drafting efforts of the Anglican Church Women Nova Scotia Board and the Diocesan Board of the Mothers' Union: Whereas the White Ribbon Campaign is the world’s largest initiative to educate and advocate for an end to violence against women, with over 55 countries participating; and Whereas in Canada, the White Ribbon Campaign begins on the Inter-national Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women on Nov. 25th, and runs until Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Dec. 6th; and Whereas Dec. 6th was chosen as the Day of Remembrance in Canada, as it coincides with the annual anniversary of the 1989 massacre at Montreal’s l’Ecole Polytechnique; Therefore, be it resolved that members of the House of Assembly join me by wearing the white ribbon in support of this initiative and take the pledge stating: I pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. Mr Younger requested waiver of notice and, therefore, passage without debate. The waiver was agreed to and the motion was carried. Thanks to all Cathedral members who wore the White Ribbon on White Ribbon Sunday, Novemer 25. You are encouraged to continue to wear the white ribbon until Canada’s National Day of Remem-brance and Action on Violence Against Women on Dec. 6th.

Saints Alive - Thanks and a Preview

Thanks are extended to both Margaret de Carvalho and Mary Stone for being with us on November 14 at Saints Alive to bring news of the Mothers' Union, the largest Chritian organization in the world. We appreciate, as well, the tech support of our Dean for their presenta-tion!! Too bad that the weather was so miserable, as it kept a number away. Did you know that at the time of the Cathe-dral's Silver Jubilee in 1935, there was a Mothers' Union branch at the Cathedral? Thanks to super sleuth, Marjorie Austin, for discovering that detail! We are de-lighted to have Cathedral member, Susan Drain, a member of Spiritual Di-rectors International, join us for Saints Alive on Wednesday, December 12; 2:00 - 3:30, on the topic of Spiritual Guid-ance. All are invited to come and ex-plore with Susan the idea of spiritual guidance and its role in deepening spiri-tual life. Spiritual guidance, exercised within the diocesan guidelines for this ministry, assists those on a spiritual jour-ney to discern God's will in their lives. Susan brings a contemplative approach to spiritual deepening and her intent on December 12 is to explain what Angli-cans mean by spiritual guidance / spiri-tual direction, to talk about a contempla-tive approach to spirituality, to promote the Atlantic Jubilee program, and to answer questions. RCCO Carol Service

Owing to the work currently being done on the Cathedral chancel the Annual Christmas Carol Service sponsored by the Halifax Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists will be held this year at St James' Anglican Church, Armdale on Monday 3 December 2012 [snow date Tuesday 4 December] at 7 pm. Carols will be sung by individual choirs, massed choir and congregation and a collection will be re-ceived for the Centre scholarship fund. All are welcome.
