Podiatrists treat all ages, and all walks of life

Postgraduate study provides opportunity for advanced clinical skills including injection techniques (April), independent prescribing (HCPC approved) and at risk limb management (June).
At postgraduate level there are Podiatrists performing surgery on foot conditions e. g. bunions and hammer toe deformities.
What do Podiatrists treat?
What kind of treatment do Podiatrists use?
• Clinical skills - using a wide range of manual skills and chemical therapies
• Biomechanics - Using and in depth understanding of how the bones, muscles and tendons work
• Foot orthoses - This covers the design and manufacture of insoles and a variety of other devices, to help patients who have functional problems with their lower limbs
• Surgical skills - Using local analgesics podiatrists undertake some surgical procedures

Studying at the University of Northampton
At all stages of the course you will have study time allocated
• Stage 1 – The academic modules underpin the clinical studies module and introduce the students to our ‘in-house’ clinics and placement
• Stage 2 – Students will undertake regular clinics, placements, labs and academic modules
• National placement is at the end of stage 2
• Stage 3 – Students will be researching for their dissertation, undertaking various specialist clinics, labs and academic modules

Assessments.
These are a mix of:
• Written exams
• Course work
• Viva Voce
• Practical exams
• Local Analgesia and Surgery Portfolio
• Presentations
Additional Costs.• The University of Northampton currently pays indemnity insurance for All students,
£125/ student (15/16 invoice) to College of Podiatry. (Not all podiatry programmes pay this)
• The University of Northampton currently provides instruments. Please note not all schools of podiatry fund this.
• The clinical uniforms (2 tops and 1 pair of trousers) are provided by the H.E.E. NHS funding (although extra may be purchased if needed) approx. £15 each.
• Additional expenses: White lab coat £12 (compulsory for dissection and lab manufacture)
Surgical scissors - £5 (compulsory)Lower limb skeletal model – cost £75 approx. (optional)
• The University owns a dedicated Podiatry Clinic (adjacent to Northampton General Hospital) so the travel costs for our course are significantly less than some other Podiatry programmes.
• Students will be expected to have suitable footwear for the clinical environment.

Entry criteria.Standard entry requirements apply.
• A typical offer is BTEC qualifications of DDM, or A level grades of BBC
• Students must also have had some work or voluntary experience within the Podiatry field.
• Applicants who don’t have this experience may be asked to gain experience and as evidence provide a written reflective account which is to be signed by the facilitator.
• All offers are subject to successful occupational health screening and a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Screening (DBS) report.
Course fee’s and student loans.• From 1 August 2017, new nursing,
midwifery and allied health students will no longer receive NHS bursaries. Instead, they will have access to the same student loans system as other students.
• Under the loans system, students on nursing, midwifery and allied health courses will typically receive around 25% more in the financial resources available to them for living costs than at present. The precise change for individuals will depend on their circumstances – for example, where they study, the length of the course, income and residency.
