The Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE)

The Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance is a major strategic partnership established among eight young research-intensive universities (Maastricht University (coordinator) – Netherlands, Carlos III University of Madrid – Spain, University of Antwerp – Belgium, University of Bremen – Germany, University of Cyprus – Cyprus, University of Eastern Finland, University of Essex - United Kingdom and University of Rome Tor Vergata – Italy) from as many European countries. YUFE is one of just 17 alliances of European universities selected by the European Commission, through a competitive procedure, to develop and implement the first models for a European University.

The YUFE European University will enable prospective students to compile their curricula, choosing from programmes offered at each of the eight YUFE universities. To allow access to all systems and facilities of these universities, the alliance will introduce a YUFE student card, valid at all participating universities. The official language of YUFE study programmes is English, but students who spend a period at a university in another

10

country are encouraged and supported to learn the language of their host country. Upon successful completion of their studies, students receive a European Diploma that will be valid anywhere in Europe. The Diploma will not only acknowledge students’ academic performance, but also acknowledge their effort in mobility, language learning, professional training, job shadowing and community volunteering.

To guarantee accessibility for as many students as possible, YUFE is preparing to set up a virtual European campus. Part-time students or interested citizens who want to follow a single virtual or physical course, can also make use of the YUFE offer. For full-time students studying at one of the partner universities elsewhere in Europe, YUFE will develop housing solutions that facilitate cultural exchange, mutual support and integration with the local community. The YUFE alliance pays a lot of attention to the specific regions in which the eight YUFE universities are located. When it comes to internships, for example, every university will work together with local authorities, the business community and other organisations. These collaborations are based on challenges that are of great importance to the YUFE regions.

The Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance pilot project will officially start on the 1st of December 2019 and will last for 3 years.

Private Accommodation Each academic semester, the Housing Office of Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service (AASWS) prepares a list of private houses and flats available for rent, in order to help ERASMUS and other international students in their search for private accommodation. The List, which is updated on a weekly basis, is published for use by the students of the University of Cyprus only, and it is available on the website of the Housing Office.

The rent for a one bedroom flat is approximately €500-€600 per month, for a two bedroom flat €650-€750 per month, and for a three bedroom flat €750-€850 per month.

At present, the Housing Office does not inspect the houses and apartments advertised in the List, regarding issues such as rent requested, quality of accommodation advertised etc.; therefore, students are advised to be very careful in their search for private accommodation.

In addition to tuition fees, you must budget for living expenses, such as the cost of accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, travel and books. More specifically, it is estimated that a student should budget for an additional €800 to €1.500 per month, but personal expenses will vary according to each student's particular lifestyle.

Climate/Clothing

Cyprus enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine all year round. Long, dry summers and mild winters are separated by short autumn and spring seasons. Summer temperatures can be very high, while winters are rather mild, with rain throughout the island and some snow on the Troodos Mountains.

Lightweight cottons and linens during summer months and warm clothing and rainwear during winter are recommended.

Travelling with a Family

If you are bringing your family with you while studying in Cyprus, you should consider beforehand issues such as family accommodation, budgeting, childcare, schools, healthcare, spouse employment etc.

Please, make sure that you contact the UCY International Support Office for guidance and assistance regarding the issues above, prior to your arrival in Cyprus.

Travelling with a Pet

EU/EEA travellers are allowed to bring their pets to Cyprus, provided they possess either a pet passport or an Animal Health Certificate. Non-EU/EEA travellers with pets also need a Pet Vaccination Certificate (especially showing vaccination against rabies).

How to get to UCY

Getting to Cyprus Cyprus is conveniently located at the crossroads of three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. Air travelers have two options of legal entry to Cyprus: Larnaca (LCA) International Airport situated in the southeast, and Paphos (PFO) International Airport situated in the southwest of the island. Larnaca International Airport is the largest of the two airports and the closest to the University campus. Most European

airlines offer connections to these two airports through their European hubs.

Getting to the University of Cyprus The University of Cyprus is located in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. The University Campus is approximately 50 km from Larnaca International Airport. Please note that Nicosia is approximately 130 km from Paphos International Airport.

By Taxi The most convenient way to travel from Larnaca International Airport to Nicosia is by taxi; the ride will cost approximately €50-€60. A taxi rank is available just outside the airport arrival area.

By Bus Airport transfer coaches run regularly on a daily basis from Larnaca and Paphos International Airports to Nicosia. A typical coach journey from Larnaca International Airport to Nicosia takes about 1 hour. The coach terminal is on your left as you exit the airport arrival area.

Coaches arrive in Nicosia city centre, where you can easily get to UCY Campus by taxi or a city bus. More specifically, the bus route 150 connects Nicosia city centre with the old and new Campus on a daily and frequent basis. In addition, a 24-hour taxi service operates within all towns. Taxis can be booked by phone, or hired directly from the street, and they are equipped with taximeters, the use of which is obligatory by law.

By Car Cars can be rented at the airports from most international rental firms at a cost starting around €30/day. However, driving in Cyprus is on the left side of the road and it is not recommended for drivers unfamiliar with this practice.

In order to travel to UCY Campus by car:

• At Larnaca International Airport roundabout take the 3rd exit into route A3.

• After about 40 km (from Larnaca), you will be approaching Nicosia.

• On the hill climb, take the exit towards "Strovolos" and stay right.

• At the roundabout take the 3rd exit into "Kalamon" for 1.2 km.

• At the roundabout take the 2nd exit for about 3 km.

• At the end of the road (2nd traffic lights) turn left in order to continue on Panepistimiou Avenue.

• At the 1st traffic lights keep going straight until you meet a roundabout.

• Take the 3rd exit of the roundabout and you will be entering one of the UCY Campus entrances.

• You will then find a smaller roundabout within the UCY Campus, take the 1st exit.

• Continue straight and park your car on your left, in the visitor’s designated parking area. Please do not park your car in a non-designated area as the Campus Security will be immobilizing your car and charging you a fine.

• On your right, just across a small roundabout, you can find the University House “Anastasios G. Leventis”, where the International Support Office, the Mobility Support Office and other UCY Administration Offices are located.

Medical Services Medical care needs in Cyprus are met through the Public Hospitals and private clinics/hospitals. The majority of doctors can converse in English, whilst nursing staff speak a range of languages.

All Public Hospitals, as well as some private clinics, have Accident and Emergency Departments for emergency cases.

General Health Scheme (GHS) As from 01/06/2019, the first phase of the General Health Scheme (GHS) has been implemented. For more information, please visit the following webpage: https://www.gesy.org.cy.

Communications

Staying in Touch Letting your family know that you are safe and well is important. Wi-Fi connection is available on campus, while all student halls have Wi-Fi and internet connections. Moreover, various establishments throughout Cyprus, including coffee shops, restaurants and internet cafes, offer free Wi-Fi connection and/or internet connection services of various speeds and types charged by the hour.

Using online communication options available on and off campus such as email, social media or skype is an inexpensive way to stay in touch with home during your stay in Cyprus.

Payphones Though most students have mobile phones, two public payphones are located on campus in the student hall area. There are two types of public payphones available in Cyprus: coin-operated and card-phones, both of which are usually found in public telephone booths throughout the island.

Public payphones can be used for both national and international calls. Telecards can be purchased at post offices, kiosks and other retail shops. Dialing instructions, as well as rates, are displayed on all payphones.

Page 28: WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS · 2020. 6. 12. · Mobility Support Oce ... Safety/Emergency • Driving in Cyprus ... Through the 8 faculties and 22 departments which operate

Postal and Courier Services If you wish to send/receive mail or parcels, there are many post offices located throughout the island and at the airports. Mail can be also posted through the yellow mailboxes on the street. Stamps may be purchased from all post offices, postal agencies, as well as from newsstands, kiosks, etc.

Courier services are also offered by the public post offices, as well as by privately operated companies. A courier service store operates on campus.

Shopping There is a range of shops on campus, including a mini-market, a bookshop/copy-center, a hairdresser’s salon, a health and wellness store, an athletic store, a courier service store, a coffee shop and a restaurant, while in the nearby area there is a modern shopping mall with several shops, a homeware center and a large supermarket. Nicosia is a lively commercial city, with a lot of shops operating in the city center, as well as in the old town.

Shop Opening Hours Shop opening hours vary, depending on their type and location, i.e. whether they are located in urban, tourist or rural areas.

Generally, shops open between 09:00-20:00 on Monday-Saturday, but this can vary an hour or two either way, depending on the type of the shop and the area it is located in. On Sunday, opening times are later, typically around 11:00, and closing times vary from 14:00-22:00, again depending on the type of outlet and its location.

Some shops still observe a half-day closing on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and close on Sunday, although in most of the tourist areas of Cyprus, both shops and supermarkets stay open till late at night and are also open on Sundays. During the period of June 15th-August 31st, there is an optional three-hour afternoon break/rest from 14:00-17:00 (siesta).

Special shopping hours apply during Christmas and Easter holidays, with shops staying open later than usual.

School of Modern Greek

The School of Modern Greek was founded in 1998 and is currently under the aegis of the Faculty of Letters. The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies is responsible for the structure and content of all School programmes.

The main objective of the School is to teach the Greek language to non-native speakers, nationals and foreigners, as well as to those who wish to perfect their knowledge of Greek. Currently, the School of Modern Greek is the leading provider of Greek language courses in Cyprus. The Greek Language Competence Certificates awarded to its students have been officially accredited and recognized by the Republic of Cyprus.

The teaching staff has a special interest in teaching Greek as a foreign or second language, since their research work is directly related to language teaching. Thus, the second major objective of the School is to promote research on teaching Greek as a foreign/second language and to produce primary materials for teaching Greek.

Intensive Greek Language Course An intensive course (four weeks long) is especially designed for International/ ERASMUS students, planning to study at the University of Cyprus. If this course is not provided (due to the limited number

of International/ERASMUS students), the students may enroll in any programme offered by the School of Modern Greek (including the Summer Intensive Course), free of charge. They can also participate, free of charge, in all the cultural activities included in the Summer Intensive Course, or any other course of the School of Modern Greek. The Summer Course is credited with 9 ECTS, whereas the other courses with 12 ECTS each, provided that the student completes the course successfully.

Application of International/ERASMUS students to attend Greek language courses should reach the School of Modern Greek by the 30th of June of each academic year.

For more information regarding application procedures, as well as courses offered, you may contact the School of Modern Greek:

Student Support Services Orientation of New Students At the beginning of the academic year, the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service (AASWS) provides extensive briefing to new students regarding the various departments and programmes of study, as well as the spectrum of services available to students. During orientation, students are introduced to the staff of the AASWS and they are given material relevant to their studies and life at the University of Cyprus. A sightseeing tour of Nicosia and a welcome reception are organized for international students and students from Greece.

Furthermore, the Mobility Support Office of the International Relations Service organizes an orientation week and a welcome meeting for all incoming ERASMUS and/or International Exchange/ Study Abroad students, prior to the beginning of each academic semester.

Student Card A Student Card is issued for all registered students, which allows them to use the library facilities and computer services. The cost for the Card is €12. Students receive their card at the beginning of the Fall Semester.

Counselling Services The University of Cyprus provides free of charge psychological support and counselling services for all its students through the UCY Mental Health Centre (tel.: +357 22894053, email: [email protected]). The primary aim of the Centre is to contribute to the well-being of students, so as to enable them to maximize their experience during the course of their studies and after.

Services are offered through individual or group psychotherapy and counselling sessions. Common concerns among students visiting the Centre include anxiety, stress, relationships, mood swings, problems that have to do with their academic life (difficulties in adjusting to their new way of life, etc.), a loss of a beloved person, as well as personal or career decisions that need to be made.

It also demonstrates ways of online searching via certain websites, informs students of contact details of universities worldwide and distributes written and online material that helps students make an informative decision.

Culture Shock

Many international students experience culture shock when arriving in a foreign country. The language, food and behavior, as well as academic and social life rules may seem strange to what you are used to at home. As a result, it may take you a while to settle and become accustomed to your new surroundings.

Though this is a very normal experience, should you find yourself experiencing an emotional rollercoaster, talk to other

About Cyprus The island of Cyprus is situated at the north-eastern end of the Mediterranean basin, and it is the third largest island in the region, with an area of 9.251 square kilometres (3.572 square miles), and a population of 946.000 residents (72% Greek-Cypriots, 17.6% Foreigners and 9.6% Turkish-Cypriots).

Cyprus is an independent sovereign Republic with a presidential system of government. On May 01, 2004 the Republic of Cyprus became a full member of the EU, completing a long journey that lasted more than three decades.

Cyprus is also a member of the United Nations and its specialised Agencies, the Council of Europe, the Commonwealth, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and many other International Organisations.

Traveller Advice The Government of the Republic of Cyprus is the only recognized Government on the island. However, as a result of the Turkish military presence and occupation, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus is not in a position to exercise control over the occupied areas of the Republic. The so-called ‘TRNC’ has been condemned and declared as both illegal and invalid by the whole of the International community, through Security Council Resolutions 541/83 and 550/84.

Presently, it is possible for foreign tourists who visit the government-controlled area of the Republic of Cyprus, to cross over to the occupied areas. However, the following precautions should be noted:

• Staying in Greek-Cypriot owned hotels in the occupied areas, which are being illegally exploited, would put you at great risk of possible legal action on the part of the owners.

• Any entry into the territory of the Republic of Cyprus via any other port or airport in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus is illegal, and travellers doing so may face legal consequences. Therefore, you are urged to travel via the recognized ports of entry (Larnaca and Paphos International Airports/Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Latsi ports).

LIVING IN CYPRUS

Page 55: WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS · 2020. 6. 12. · Mobility Support Oce ... Safety/Emergency • Driving in Cyprus ... Through the 8 faculties and 22 departments which operate

Currency/Currency Exchange On January 01, 2008, the Republic of Cyprus joined the Eurosystem and in doing so introduced the Euro (€) as its official currency, replacing the Cyprus pound as the unit of account. Thus, Euro banknotes and coins are the country’s legal tender.

There are seven denominations in Euro banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. They are all distinguished by a different colour and size. One Euro is divided into 100 cents. There are eight Euro coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent, and 1 and 2 Euro.

All banks operating in Cyprus offer foreign currency exchange services and quote the exchange rates of the Euro against all major foreign currencies daily.

Religion Cyprus enjoys a high level of freedom of worship. While the majority of Greek-Cypriots are Greek Orthodox Christians, other denominations are represented on the island, including Armenians, Maronites and Roman Catholics. The Turkish-Cypriot Community is predominantly Muslim.

Languages The official languages of the island are Greek and Turkish, whilst English is widely spoken. French, German and Russian are also spoken within the tourism industry.

Time Cyprus time is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +2 hours. Each year on the last Sunday of March at 01:00 GMT (03:00 local time), daylight saving time comes into effect in Cyprus and all clocks are advanced by one hour. On the last Sunday in October at 01:00 GMT (04:00 Local Time), Cyprus reverts to standard time.

Local Food The Cypriot cuisine is an exotic blend of Greek and Middle Eastern cultures, which offers a big gastronomic adventure with unique dishes and culinary experiences. The “Mediterranean Diet” is considered to be of the healthiest, thanks to its abundance of heart-healthy olive oil, pulses, lean meat, local herbs and freshly grown fruit and vegetables.

In Cyprus, you can also find just about any type of ethnic food, as well as American and International franchises, but we recommend while in Cyprus, eat what the locals eat, since it is fresh as well as tasty.

Amongst the dishes you would expect to be served in most of the Cypriot restaurants and definitely should try are:

Cypriot Specialities

• Afelia: pork, marinated with coriander.

• Village salad: salad composed of cabbage, lettuce, celery, cucumber, tomato, pepper, olives, feta cheese and herbs.

• Fish: usually deep-fried.

• Halloumi: cheese made from either sheep's or cow's milk which tastes especially good when fried or grilled.

• Hummus: cold chickpea puree.

Climate Cyprus enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine all year round. Long dry summers from mid–May to mid–October, and mild winters from December to February, are separated by short autumn and spring seasons.

Summer is a season of high temperatures with cloudless skies, but the sea breeze creates a pleasant atmosphere in the coastal areas. Winters are mild with rain throughout the island, as well as some snow on Troodos Mountains.

The average maximum temperatures for the hottest months of July and August range between 38° C and 27° C, while the average minimum temperatures for January, the coolest month, are 5° C and 0° C.

Safety/Emergency Cyprus has an excellent reputation for being a safe and a friendly place. However, a few basic precautions are needed in order to protect yourself and your belongings.

Crime in Cyprus is, comparatively, at a very low level. The Police Force is always ready to provide any assistance to people who need help.

In case of emergency, immediate response is given by the following telephone numbers, where English is spoken:

Island-wide

• Ambulance: 112 • Fire Service: 112 • Police: 112 • Night Pharmacies: 11892

Regional Hospitals

• Nicosia General Hospital: 22 603000 (Accidents & Emergency)

• Limassol General Hospital: 25 801100 • Larnaca General Hospital: 24 800500 • Paphos General Hospital: 26 803100

Driving in Cyprus In case you plan to be using a private car while in Cyprus, please note the following for driving safely on the island:

• Traffic moves on the LEFT hand-side of the road, NOT on the right.

• International road traffic signs are in use, and placed along the roads and highways, on the left hand-side.

• Distances and road speed limits are posted in kilometres and kilometres per hour (km/h) respectively.

• The maximum speed limit on the motorways is 100 km/h and the lower speed limit is 65 km/h.

• On all other roads the general speed limit is 80 km/h, unless a lower one is indicated.

Page 59: WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS · 2020. 6. 12. · Mobility Support Oce ... Safety/Emergency • Driving in Cyprus ... Through the 8 faculties and 22 departments which operate

59

• In built-up areas, the speed limit is generally 50km/h, unless a different one is indicated.

• The use of seat–belts is compulsory (front and back).

• Driving, or being in charge of a motor vehicle or pedal cycle with alcohol concentration in breath or blood above the prescribed limit, is an offence. Visitors in Cyprus can drive using a valid International Driving License, or their National Driving License, provided it is valid for the class of vehicle they wish to drive. The cost of a Cyprus Driving License is €40 for people aged up to 65, and free over the age of 65. European driving licenses are recognized officially by legislation (Law 94 (1)/2001).

Non-EU/EAA citizens are allowed to drive holding their particular nation’s driving license for a period of around 30 days. If they are holders of an International Driving License, they are allowed to drive, provided their license is valid.

• Walk on the pavement. If there is no pavement, walk on the right side of the road.

• Look both to your right and left before crossing any road.

• Pedestrians are not allowed to enter motorways, nor are they allowed to walk on the edge of the motorway.

The City of Nicosia The University of Cyprus is located in Nicosia (Lefkosia), the Island's capital city, which is geographically located in the centre of the Island. Nicosia is the administrative, commercial, cultural and educational centre of Cyprus. It is a cosmopolitan and vibrant European capital, with a lot of shops, restaurants/clubs and modern facilities operating in the city centre, as well as in the old town.

Nicosia, one of the oldest cities in our part of the world, is a sophisticated and charming place, rich in history and culture. The heart of the city, within the 16th century Venetian walls, has a number of interesting museums and art galleries, byzantine churches, medieval and neoclassical buildings, while the narrow streets retain the romantic atmosphere of the past. Much of the beauty and charm of Nicosia is to be found in the old city with its labyrinthine alleyways and elegant courtyard houses.

A modern highway system connects Nicosia to all main towns and cities, many in under an hour driving time.

Urban Buses Network Nicosia has an organized network of urban buses, managed by the Nicosia Bus Company Ltd (tel.: +357 22778841). All the bus routes begin from the Solonos Square terminal in the city center and cover all the areas of the city. Buses run every 20 to 30 minutes depending on the destination, while on weekends they run less frequently. Additionally, Nicosia Municipality runs its own buses, the well-known Yellow Buses, which cover the old city within the walls, free of charge.

Urban Taxis There are many taxi companies operating in Nicosia. In order to take a taxi, you have to call one of the taxi companies and the taxi will pick you up from where you are. Besides the taxi companies, there is a taxi rank at Eleftheria Square (city centre), where you can find taxis twenty-four hours a day. Taxi fares are regulated by law and taxi drivers are obligated to use a taximeter.
