Welcome to the Raiders brass!
Welcome to the 2022 Raiders DCI Experience Days and audition process! We’ve been looking forward to this moment since March 2020, when COVID prevented us from getting back together again for over two years. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time.
The 2022 season is going to help us all get back to “normal,” whatever that might be. We can’t wait to work together and put a show on the field that announces that we are back – not just the Raiders, but the drum corps activity. And we’re going to run this season in a way that’s meaningful to all of us.
No doubt it’s been a rough time for many of us. But as I’ve seen in the last few months, the marching world is ready to get back on the field again. We’re going to see what it means to be successful this season and be an example of what it takes to build strength for years to come.
For the Experience Days
Get ready for an introduction or re-introduction to Drum Corps International and the Raiders! Whether you’re here to audition for the summer production or just see what it’s like to be a part of a drum corps, this is where it all begins. You’ll get to know the instructors and as well as other friends passionate about marching, performing, playing, and spinning.
If you love what you see – and we know you will – we want you to consider being a part of our 2022 production.
You’ll have the opportunity to talk to the instructors about what it takes to earn a spot on the field with the Raiders this year and take the first step towards your audition process.
For in-person auditions
You will be invited to continue to attend Experience Days and the Membership Weekends in December and January. For brass auditions, you do not need to prepare anything other than the exercises we are providing you in this packet; however, you are free to also prepare a short solo piece – maybe something you’ve played in your band or an audition piece for a regional or state ensemble.
The staff will work with you and will want to see how well you listen to instruction and your general attitude. Skill on your instrument is an important piece of the puzzle, but so are the other qualities you bring to the ensemble. Being an exemplary member of a drum corps is about more than just the music.
For video auditions
If you cannot attend an Experience Day due to distance, you can still receive feedback prior to our Membership Weekends, which you will be expected to attend. Prepare a video playing the exercises included in this packet as well as a short solo piece (see above). Record yourself playing through the exercises several times and keep the best reps. Use whatever brass instrument with which you feel comfortable.
It’s OK if you are a beginner!
Some of the Raiders’ best brass performers have been woodwind players who picked up a brass instrument for the first time when they walked in the door! Learning a brass instrument is easier when you already have some experience on any wind instrument, and the instructors at the Raiders are comfortable and experienced working with you to bring you to the level you need to be to perform a demanding DCI program.
The Raiders will challenge you to surpass your potential.
Regardless of your skill level or your experience, our instructors will bring out the absolute best in you, and they will create opportunities for you to push yourself beyond the performing limits you believe you have.
When you walk off the field at Open Class finals or our final performance at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, you will look back at your progress, amazed at what you’ve accomplished.
That moment, especially if this is your first time with a DCI drum corps, will be unforgettable. You will be surrounded by a corps family, with whom you’ve shared your wins and failures, ups and downs, for an entire season. And you’ll know that everything we achieved this season, we’ve done together, as a corps, where everyone had an essential role to play.
