is THIS Wednesday! Join Sacred Heart Youth Ministry in congratulating all the Candidates who will be Confirmed this afternoon!
Please join me in a prayer for the Confirmandi:
Spirit of God, grant me:
The gift of wisdom
To see the world through your eyes,
The gift of counsel
To make difficult decisions,
The gifts of knowledge and understanding
To use my mind to know you and to love you,
The gift of fortitude
To have the courage to live in the faith
Despite the difficulties and disappointments,
The gift of piety
To be able to express my special love
And commitment to you,
And the right kind of awesome fear
That makes me pause to wonder and revere
God’s Love.
Amen.

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO GIVE
By Debbie Chalik
The reading for this Sunday is interesting and a little bit unnerving! The Gospel is Luke 16:19-31, and it tells of Lazarus and the rich man.
The rich man (who in the story has no name), is dressed in beautiful clothes and has plenty to eat. Outside of his door is a man named Lazarus. Lazarus is poor and in need of food. The story tells us that Lazarus would be happy to eat the scraps that the rich man discarded. When the two men die, the rich man is in a place of torment, while in the distance, he sees Abraham with Lazarus at his side.
The message is that the rich man lived his life selfishly not caring about the needs of those around him.
As parents, our first and most important job is to direct children in the Catholic faith. Taking time to nurture a giving heart is something we as Catholic parents should strive to pass on to our children. This is a lesson that is best learned by doing.
Giving can come in the form of simply expressing appreciation, helping a neighbor who is ill, or giving a gift to a family in need at Christmas or during Lent.
There are abundant family activities available throughout our community and through Sacred Heart Church all year long! The acts of kindness don’t need to be limited to only the season of Advent and Christmas. The key is to make it a part of what you do as a family.
This reading is one of the most thought provoking for me. Every time I read it, I am reminded that I can do better.

PLEASE PRAY FOR...
Please let us know of if you would like us to pray for you. Call the office or Deacon Ed at 515-225-6414
In living your strength, we have thus far discussed what strength and talents mean. Now, we dive into Skills. Skills are basic abilities to move through the fundamental steps of a task. They can be acquired
through formal or informal training. Once you have acquired the skills necessary for a given activity, you have the ability to perform its steps at base-level ability. You may be asking yourself, why do we care about living our strengths? Every Mass we pray the prayer for Divine Renovation. We ask God to help us become Active Apostles on fire for Jesus Christ. Living our strengths allows us to use our God-given talents in the best possible way to help build the kingdom of God.

Help Us Collect 1000 Pairs of Socks
Did you know Socks are among the most requested item of those in need? There are two main reasons socks are among the most valuable piece of clothing to people without permanent housing. For one, feet work overtime when there’s no cozy home (and laundry room) to return to each night. The other reason is that socks aren’t often donated or, when they are, the goods can’t be sanitized and put to use.
The Sacred Heart Conference is holding a Sock Drive to collect 1,000 pairs of new socks to place in Holiday Gift Baskets and to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores in Des Moines.
We need socks for men, women and children – all sizes.
When: After Masses on October 5-6 and October 12-13
