SHSM ProgramSpecialist High Skills Major
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
• The SHSM is a Ministry approved program offered to grade 10 students going into grade 11
• This program is open to all workplace, college and university bound students.
• The SHSM program allows students to explore and prepare for careers in medicine, health care, teaching, psychology, social work, kinesiology, fitness, food and nutrition, veterinary medicine and much more
• The program is a two year commitment that “bundles” various inter-related courses, including a cooperative education placement.
• While in the program students in grade 11 and 12 earn certifications such as First Aid /CPR and are exposed to various “reach ahead” experiences through facility field trips, guest speakers and visits to colleges and universities
• Students who successfully complete the required program components will earn a Red Seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma

Explore and experience the different post-secondary destinations within the sector (e.g., field trip to a university or to a clinic).
Over the course of Grade 11 and 12, students will complete an assignment that connects English, Math, Science, Social Science, Humanities courses to the Health and Wellness sector.
