THIS AND THAT

It was a beautiful night for a ball game. While

the White Sox found a way to lose the game, we

all had a good time. Fireworks, the wave, an

appearance on the video screen, and the pleas-

ure of each other’s company made for a great

evening. Thanks to all who shepherded our

young guests and to everyone who was able to

attend.

Registration for religious education classes is

taking place now. Come to the rectory between

the hours of nine and four (Monday-Friday) to

register your children. Classes begin on Sep-

tember 8th. Students registered before Septem-

ber 1st can win one of two backpacks filled with

school supplies.

Parish Council members are reminded that

the next Parish Council meeting will take place

on Wednesday, August 28th at 7:00 PM. Scrip-

ture Reflections will commence next Wednes-

day morning, August 21st at 9:00 AM.

Immigration reform is a hot topic in the

Church, civil society, and the United States

Congress. A lot of parishes with heavy immi-

grant populations are actively backing reforms.

Many of the parishes with small numbers of im-

migrants won’t touch the topic with a ten foot

pole. We have a moderate immigrant popula-

tion. We are somewhere in the middle be-

tween the two extremes. The reforms seem to

divide us. I wonder why this is so?

On July 8th Pope Francis visited the island of

Lampedusa. This small island is the destination

for migrants trying to get to Europe from North

Africa. According to the BBC the Pope called

for a reawakening of consciences to counter the

indifference shown to immigrants. The Pope is

very aware of the fact that he is the descendant

of immigrants, just like you are.

In our country the Church has long sup-

ported reforms that include a path to citizen-

ship for those who are here illegally. It contin-

ues to do so. Each Sunday for the next month

one of our prayers of intercession will be for the

reform of immigration laws. Our parish sits in

two congressional districts. Congressman Rush

has supported immigration reforms. Congress-

man Lipinski has not supported them.

On Sunday, September 8th at 12 noon we will

have a brief bilingual prayer service in support

of immigrants and immigration reform in

church. It will be brief because there is Mass at

10:30 and 12:30 that day. Consider joining us

for prayer. What will we pray for? We will

pray that the Congress reform the immigration

laws and that those laws include a path to citi-

zenship.

May God bless us all,

Fr. Ted

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sat.—Sun. August 17-18, 2013

The fire Jesus wants to give His disciples and to us today is the burning

hope and peace that unites Him to us and energizes us to live out His life.

He says that hope comes at a price, the price of the cross and giving up the

divisions that will remain unless we turn to love the families and friends

that presently separate and divide us from each other and from Him. Thus His peace will come but we have to

work to gain it.

In the Chicago Tribune recently there was an article about a man who lost his daughter in a car accident. He first

wanted to see the driver punished. Gradually, he came to forgive him and wanted him to become a good young

man. He thus gave up his division and provided peace and brotherhood for himself, his family and the young

man. The young man was released from jail and given community service to express his new freedoms. The lat-

ter gained peace and new hope within himself, his family and his former enemy.

For people to gain peace they must give up their fighting with each other, breakdown their divisions within fami-

lies and establish a relation of love and compassion with each other.

In the second reading today, that of the Hebrews, we’re told to run the race that lies before us and to keep our eyes

on Jesus. He knew that the cross was ahead of Him. And beyond it was the joy of His resurrection. The joyful

life he’d have with His Father in heaven was waiting. Thus He encourages us to struggle against sin and divisions

and gain the same joy and peace He would achieve. He struggled Himself but succeeded to enter the home of his

Father.

Jeremiah in the first reading suffered by being put in the muddy well. His enemies set divisions but good servants

went to bat for him and pleaded with the king. They gained Jeremiah’s release.

Jesus said “I have come to set the earth on fire.” It’s our heart He wants to inflame. He wants to inspire us to

spread kindness to others, peace among families, and perseverance in gaining his resurrected life. So, keep your

eyes on Jesus and follow His ways. He’s worth it!
