There is much enthusiasm for advancing networking technology. But it is the application layer that will drive demand and make the case for investment in next generation networks. One of those technologies - smartglasses - is being pioneered here in Canada. Canadians have the unique chance to define the next generation computing platform and use it as a proving ground for next generation networks.

The world is in a state of transformation, with technological advancements changing how we conduct business and live our lives every day. Hyper-connectivity, insatiable bandwidth demands, and warp-speed technology evolution is challenging the global and Canadian ICT industry to build strategies and business models that ensure both their relevance in today’s world but also the flexibility to adapt with the changing tech sector and be a driving force in the industry’s transformation. This panel will discuss how advancements in the networking industry are changing the business landscape for ICT driven organizations. It will also explore how tech business decision makers and policy-makers can position themselves to take advantage of the opportunities that are present in ICT, as well as avoid being left stagnant as new challenges appear.

With the latest developments in enhanced connectivity and advanced infrastructure, the media is quick to discuss the Smart City and the great changes it will bring to urban life. But how will outlying communities and rural areas be effected by this tide of new technology. According to Trading Economics, the population of Canadians living in rural areas is approximately 18% (close to 1 in 5 of Canadians). These rural and northern areas often have high-latency connectivity and low performing networks despite being the areas that drive economic prosperity in multi-billion dollar industries like agriculture, mining, and forestry. In an economy-wide digital transformation, residents and businesses located outside city centres can benefit greatly from high-speed connectivity. This panel will examine the challenges and solutions of extending ultra-speed network connectivity from urban city centres to the rural and northern areas of Canada.

TRANSFORMING VERTICAL MARKETSTHROUGH CONNECTIVITY
Samer GessiahDirector, Technology StrategyTELUS
2:50 - 3:45 PMOrganizations across all industries are becoming increasingly dependent on ICT technologies. In fact, organizations outside the ICT sector employ more ICT professionals than the ICT sector itself. According to the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), as of 2017, 60% of ICT professionals were employed outside the ICT sector. This is not surprising: digitization, ubiquitous connectivity, mobility, cloud computing, and Internet of Things, among other next generation technologies, are revolutionizing how traditional vertical industries operate and serve their customers. This panel will look at how advancements in ICT and networking are moving these industries forward, and what organizations must do to take full advantage of the transformational potential of these technologies.
