One day, all the disciples went to Jesus and said, Master, we all want to go on a pilgrimage.
Jesus: Why do you want to go on a pilgrimage?
Disciples: So that we can improve our devotion.
Jesus: OK. Then do me a favor. Please take this Karela (bitter gourd) along with you and wherever you
go and whichever temple you visit, place it in the altar of the Deity, take the blessings and bring
it back. So, the Karela went on pilgrimage, temple to temple.
Jesus: When they came back, the Master said, “cook that Karela and serve it to me.”
Disciples: The disciples cooked it and served it to the master. After having the first bite, the master said,
“Surprising”!!!
Disciples: What’s so surprising.
Jesus: Even after the pilgrimage the Karela is still bitter. How come?’
Disciples: But that’s the very nature of the Karela, Master.
Jesus: I am saying. Unless you change your nature, a pilgrimage will not make any difference.
So, you & I, if we do not change ourselves, no teacher or guru can make a difference in our lives.
The revelation of the birth of Jesus to the Magi in Matthew’s Gospel reminds us of the many times during his
ministry that Jesus made bridges to reach out to those who were looked down upon by society (you and me)
How many times do we have to be told before we truly understand what this means; are we living our lives in
this manner?
We might ask, “What has all of this to do with us? We are already Christians.” Jesus’ ministry challenges us to
ask ourselves how we treat others. It is said that a person’s first and lasting impression of what ‘church is”
comes from ones parish experience. Our experience in the life of the parish is where our relationship with God
unfolds. Remember: the Bible doesn’t promise peace to those who dwell on the faults of others! It says, “[The
Lord] will keep them in perfect peace, whose minds are stayed on [Him]! (Isa. 26:3).
A critical spirit dwells on the negative, looks for flaws rather than positive qualities in others. constantly com-
plaining or criticizing and usually upset with something or somebody This a destructive path to progress in a
parish. We need to be encouragers; genuinely building up others and helping them become all that they can
become and all that God longs for them to become. Get excited about building people up, not tearing them
down! Be an encourager like Barnabas was to Paul and trust God to provide encouragement for you as well. A
timely word of genuine affirmation may mean more than you know.
Let us use our tongues to build up and not tear down. We tend to judge others by their actions and ourselves by
our intentions. Truth is, we can’t judge anyone because we don’t have a heart x-ray machine. We should be
content to judge only ourselves and seek to bring our own lives in alignment with God’s Word. May God grant
us an Epiphany in 2018.

Epiphany House
Blessing With Chalk 2018
The Catholic Church has a custom of
blessing homes on the Feast of the
Epiphany (January 6). Family and
friends gather to ask God’s blessing on
their homes and those who live in or
visit the home. It is an invitation for
Jesus to be a daily guest in our home,
our comings and goings, our conversa-
tions, our work and play, our joys and
sorrows. “Chalking the door” is a way
to celebrate and physically mark the
occasion of the Epiphany and God’s
blessing of our lives and home. It is a
reminder to let the meaning of the
written symbols sink into the depths of
our heart and be manifest in our words
and actions.
One way of doing this is to use chalk,
sprinkled with holy water, and write
above the home’s entryway, 20 + C +
M + B + 18. The letters C, M, B have
two meanings. They are the initials of
the traditional names of the three
magi: Caspar, Melchior, and
Balthazar. They also abbreviate the
Latin words Christus mansionem
benedicat, “May Christ bless the
house.” The “+” signs represent the
cross, and 2018 is the year.

Then offer the following prayer: Visit,
O blessed Lord, this home with the
gladness of your presence. Bless all
who live or visit here with the gift of
your love; and grant that we may
manifest your love to each other and
to all whose lives we touch. May we
grow in grace and in the knowledge
and love of you; guide, comfort, and
strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ,
now and forever. Amen
Marking the doorway to one’s home is
rooted in the Old Testament. Holy
Scripture reminds us that God has at
times commanded his people to mark
their doors. The Israelites marked their
doors with the lamb’s blood on the
night of the Passover (Exodus 12:7).
