Using Dishwashers for Meat and Dairy Consecutively:

The Status of the Dishwasher's Walls What is the status of the dishwasher's walls?

Let us say that one washes dairy or meat dishes in a

dishwasher. We must ask whether the walls of the dishwasher

absorb the taste, rendering the entire dishwasher a milkhig (dairy)

or fleishig (meat) utensil. Similarly, we must determine whether

the walls of the dishwasher have the ability to impart taste to the

dishes being washed.

Regarding the walls of the dishwasher there would seem

to be two ways in which they can absorb ta'am (taste).

If the concern is ta'am that came from the dishes them-

selves, certainly that ta'am should be considered merely "nat bar

nat" (secondary). Incidentally, this rationale applies only to ko-

sher meat or dairy dishes; even secondary taste emitted from non-

kosher utensils has the ability to affect another vessel.

If the concern is that taste from meat or dairy food resi-

due may be absorbed into the utensils, then we must ask our-

selves: Is the dishwasher an environment in which ta'am can be

transferred?

Seemingly, there should be a major difference between

dishwashers in America and in Europe/Israel. An American dish-

washer receives its water from a separate hot water pipe. The

water entering the dishwasher was heated up in the house boiler,

rendering the dishwasher a "keli sheni" (second vessel) and not a

"keli rishon." Dishwashers in Europe and Israel, however, con-

tain a heating element in the bottom of the machine, rendering

the dishwasher a keli rishon.

This difference may be very significant to our discus-

sion. In the future, we will discuss the difference between a keli

rishon and keli sheni. It is sufficient for now to say that if the

food particles are heated in a keli sheni, one may argue that the

dishwasher bottom never has the potential to absorb ta'am

(Shulchan Arukh YD 105:2). Furthermore, the water sprayed by

the revolving wand MAY be considered iruy (pouring) from a

keli sheni, which is most likely halakhically insignificant.

If, however, we view the dishwasher as a keli rishon, the

The purpose of Hashem’s appearance to Avraham is

somewhat ambiguous. We are not told why Hashem ap-

peared, and what, if anything, he told Avraham.

Rashi quotes the Midrash which argues that he came

to be mevaker cholim, visiting Avraham, who was recuperat-

ing from his brit mila surgery.

Abarbanel argues that Hashem came to visit him,

whereupon they were immediately interrupted by visitors.

After the visitors left, Hashem informed Avraham that he

was going to destroy Sedom. The purpose of his visit was to

relay this information, but it was interrupted by the visitors.

Rashbam offers a third interpretation. He explains

that the first pasuk in our parsha introduces our story by tell-

ing us that Hashem came to visit Avraham. The next pasuk

explains the nature of the visit. We are told that he saw three

men who were, in reality, angels. When the Torah tells us

that Hashem appeared to Avraham, it means that the angels,

representing Hashem, appeared to Avraham. Rashbam sup-

ports this interpretation by offering a number of pesukim

where the appearance of angels is referred to as the appear-

ance of Hashem. One example he cites is the story of Moshe

and the burning bush. The pesukim relate that Moshe saw an

angel in the bush, and then Hashem began to speak to him.

The Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim offers a similar explana-

tion of the first pasuk in our parsha, as does Chizkuni.

How are we to understand this story? Did Avraham

realize what was transpiring? Did he understand that these

men were really angels and messengers of Hashem? If he did

understand, why did he treat them like humans and provide

them with shelter and food?

Applying the reading of the Rashbam, we can under-

food residue is actually cooking in the bottom of the dishwater, and ta'am is absorbed into its walls. If so, then the next time this

dishwasher is used, it is equivalent to cooking meat in a dairy pot, which renders the entire machine and its contents basar be-chalav

(meat and dairy)!

Rav Moshe Feinstein (YD 3:11), who argued FOR the permissibility of using one dishwasher for consecutive use of meat

and dairy dishes, notes that a dishwasher is a keli sheni, and therefore there may be no halakhic problem. Some argue (see article by

Rav Yisrael Rosen, Techumin 11) that dishwashers in Europe and Israel are considered a keli rishon, rendering the heter of Rav

Moshe Feinstein not applicable in Israel and Europe.

Incidentally, I am under the impression that newer dishwasher models in America also have built-in heating elements not

only for the drying cycle, but also to insure that the water reaches the proper temperature. The web page cited last week seems to

confirm this. I encourage readers to investigate this point further.

as representatives of Hashem, are spiritual beings. At the same time, we find physical descriptions of angels in various prophe-

cies. As such, angels exist in a realm that lies somewhere between the physical and spiritual. As such, they are often created

bearing physical characteristics, while still remaining primarily spiritual beings. The nature of their mission may determine the

extent of their physicality. Some angels may be more physical than others.

Avraham realized that his visitors were angels. This is why he said, “Ado-nai, im na matzatee chen be’einecha, al na

taavor me’al avdecha.” There is a debate whether the word adonai referred to Hashem, or referred to the messengers. One of

the reasons to argue that he was not speaking to the angels is that the phrase is addressed to one being, whereas there were

three angels. A response to this argument is that Avraham was speaking to the angels. He recognized that all three angels were

there to represent Hashem, and as such he asked the Divine Presence, represented in this case by the three angels, not to leave.

After they agreed to stay, he began to speak in the plural because he was feeding three mouths and washing three sets of feet,

so the usage of plural in this case is appropriate.

If Avraham understood who they were, why did he feed them? He understood that some angels manifest physical

characteristics to the point where they function in physical ways during the duration of their mission in this world. This is why

the Torah says that he saw “Shlosha anoshim nitzavim alav.” They were angels who had taken on the features of man and

were therefore to be referred to as men.

We find a similar example when Yaakov struggled with the angel of Esav. We are told “vayeavek ish imo,” “a man fought with him.” This incident was similar in that this angel fulfilled his purpose by taking on physical attributes and engag-

ing in the physical act of fighting.

Avraham understood this and recognized that these were angels that were capable of eating. Therefore he fed them.

Thus, Avraham understood not only who these visitors were, but how to treat them appropriately.

The mikvah building at East Alameda Ave. and Leyden Street is closing permanently, effec-tive immediately. Meanwhile, the MOED board and the community will actively continue to raise funds to replace it with a new, state-of-the-art community mikvah on that site. After years of bandaid fixes and renovations that could only delay the inevitable, the build-ing has deteriorated at an alarming rate over the past few months. Safety is always our primary concern, and as winter approaches it became obvious that the building is no longer safe and cannot be repaired. Rabbis will advise mikvah users of alternatative facilities available for weekday and Shabbos use as information becomes available.

Philippe Karsenty is a French media analyst and founder of Media-Ratings, a com-pany monitoring the French media for bias. Mr. Karsenty was born into a family of Jewish immigrants from North Africa. When he was in his 20s, he set up a share-trading company on the Paris Bourse, and continued to work as a broker until 1997. Karsenty came to widespread public at-tention in 2004, when he was sued for libel by the French television network, France 2, after accusing the network of having broadcast a staged footage of the reported killing of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, Muhammad al-Durrah, during a gun battle in the Gaza Strip in 2000.[1] France 2 won its case in October 2006,[3] but the judgment was overturned by the Paris Court of Appeal in May 2008, with France 2 refusing to release the full footage taken by their stringer on that day.[4] France 2 has appealed the deci-

sion to the Cour de cassation, France's highest court. Subsequently, Karsenty won a case against Canal+, a French pay television chan-nel, which broadcast a documentary film sup-porting Charles Enderlin's report. Karsenty said the documentary had slandered him while ig-noring the facts.[6] In February 2012, the Cour de cassation cancelled the ruling of the Court of Appeal which had acquitted Karsenty. On June 26, 2013, the Paris Court of Appeals once again convicted Karsenty of defamation, and fined him €7000. Parallel to that, on June 10, 2010, a court in Nanterre sentenced Canal Plus and Tac Press for defaming Philippe Karsenty in a documentary broadcast by this channel on April 24, 2008 whose title was Rumors, Brainwashing: The New News War.
