The number of health coaches employed in the US is expected to grow 21.9% by 2022.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates…

In a recent article in the Orlando Sentinel, Dr. Steven McCarus, a gynecologist for Florida Hospital for Women at Winter Park Memorial Hospital relies on a health coach to

do what he doesn’t have time for.


Dr. Steven “I am one physician with 5,000 patients in my practice. I am working at max. For me, a health coach is a way to get through my day and address problems I can’t.”


In the same article…


Health coach Bridgette Jameson said “Having a health coach helps doctors provide support for patients who need

help dealing with chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. The

doctor’s goal is to prescribe as little medicine as possible and treat as much as we can with lifestyle. That’s where I

come in.”


The top doctors believe that “lifestyle medicine” or “lifestyle change” is the future of health care.


Check this out – from a recent paper by Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Michael Roizen…


“Most of the chronic diseases that affect 160 million Americans and account for 78% of our healthcare costs are caused by lifestyle and environmental

factors- namely our diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and chronic stress.”


Therefore, we can refer to chronic diseases as Lifestyle Diseases.

“More from for example, the recent ‘EPIC’ study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine studied 23,000

people’s adherence to 4 simple behaviors…”


1. Not Smoking.


2. Exercising 3.5 hours a week.


3. Eating a healthy diet.

[Fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and limited amounts of meat]


4. Maintaining a healthy weight.

[BMI <30]


“In those adhering to these behaviors

93% of diabetes 81% of heart attacks

50% of strokes36% of all cancers

were prevented.”


“This study is only one among a large evidence base documenting how lifestyle intervention [or lifestyle

change] is often more effective in reducing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, heart failure, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and all-cause mortality than almost any

other medical intervention.”


“Lifestyle is the best medicine.”


“When the underlying lifestyle causes of risk factors are addressed, like what and how much we eat, whether we

smoke, how often we exercise, how we manage stress, and the effects of environmental toxins, patients often are able

to stop taking medication (under their doctor’s supervision, of course). Likewise, they often can avoid

surgery as well.”


Another example from the same paper…


“Presently, according to the American Heart Association, 1.3 million coronary angioplasty and 448000 coronary bypass operations are performed annually at a cost of more than

$100 billion. Despite these costs, many studies, including one last month in The New England Journal of Medicine, reveal that angioplasties and stents do not prolong life or even prevent heart attacks in stable patients (ie, 95% of those

who receive them).


Coronary bypass surgery prolongs life in less than 2% to 3% of patients who receive it.


In contrast…


The INTERHEART study followed 30,000 people and found that changing lifestyle could prevent at least 90%

of all heart disease.


The same lifestyle changes that can prevent or even reverse heart disease can prevent or reverse many

other chronic diseases as well.

So lifestyle change is clearly the answer to preventing or reverse lifestyle diseases.


Sounds easy, right?


A client comes to you.


You tell them how to change their lifestyle.


How to eat healthy.


How to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.


To move every week.


And BOOM.


Done.


Excellent health coaching.


But here’s the problem…


People do not do what they are told to do.


Or even what they know they SHOULD do.


The #1 problem for ALL healthcare professionals and their patients and clients is….


PATIENT COMPLIANCE.


Here’s a little-known secret that most health coaching schools won’t tell you…


KNOWLEDGE does not equal BEHAVIOR CHANGE.


Most health coach trainings will teach you a ton of diet and nutrition knowledge.


But NOT how to change your clients behavior in a way that LASTS.


We don’t believe that’s right.


And that’s why we created BAHC.


We couldn’t stand seeing the 1000s of health coaches we trained who came out of their health coach training without

the #1 most important skill they needed to succeed as a health coach.

A recent article from doctors David A. Asch and Kevin G. Volpp agrees they say...


“Employers, health insurers, doctors, and health systems increasingly recognize that everyday behaviors are

among the most important determinants of health…”


How we live our lives.


whether we smoke, exercise, take our medications, and wear seat belts.


substantially determines how long we live and the health we enjoy.


Everyone is interested in wellness, yet everyone’s first suggestion for achieving it is education.


That approach seems reasonable.


Until you think through the implicit assumptions:


If we tell people that smoking is dangerous.


They will stop.


If people are informed about the benefits of exercise, they will go for a run.


Health education is critically important.


But if we devote resources of educating people about what they already know but don’t do, we may overlook

more practical solutions.


The next step beyond education…[is to] target BEHAVIOR rather than KNOWLEDGE.


This is where health coaches are invaluable in the healthcare marketplace.


Why?


Because we are saying.


And what these doctors are saying.


Is that knowledge ALONE does not create lifestyle change.


There’s another step.


Which is behavior change – or HABIT CHANGE.


If you can change a behavior, or change a habit, then you can change someone’s health.


And if you can change someone’s health, you can change their life.


This is why health coaches are uniquely positioned in the healthcare marketplace.

“Changework” is a coaching process that helps your client BE different,

without having to REMEMBER to be different.


Here’s what we mean by that…


Let’s imagine that you’re a health or wellness coach.


You have a client who binge eats ice cream every night.


Most health or wellness coaching schools will teach you to do something like helping your client create a list of other

behaviors she could do instead of going to her freezer, like calling a friend, writing in a journal, having sex, talking a

walk or drinking a glass of water.


Basically, you’re giving your client “advice” on what she can do instead of binge eat.


And that advice might work for a while, but our esteemed doctors just said it won’t last.


Why?


Because that advice – writing in a journal, calling a friend, taking a walk instead of bingeing – requires WILLPOWER.


That advice requires your client to “hold out” against her urge to binge and MAKE herself do something else…

meanwhile she still wants to binge.


And if she doesn’t at first, she probably will after a few journal writing sessions.


With the coaching method that we teach in BAHC, we show you how to re-wire your client’s thought process so that she

completely loses the urge to binge.


She doesn’t need the list of action steps, and she doesn’t need willpower, because she has completely forgotten

about even moving toward the freezer.


Your client is different without having to do any work.


She doesn’t have to REMEMBER to be different. This is a RADICAL upleaving of what’s possible

in health coaching.


And is it’s something that you won’t learn in any other health coaching school or training program.


Here’s A Super Ninja Coaching Secret that you will not learn in any other health coach or nutrition program.


“No matter how good your advice is, the client won’t get results unless you address the underlying reason

for staying stuck.”


3 Basic Human Needs

•LOVE

•SAFETY

•BELONGING


Each of us has unique coding or programming in our brains that tells us when to go forward or when to slam

on the brakes.


For example, let’s say Carey is a part-time actor and a part-time coach.


And let’s say she wants to lose 10 pounds so she can look great on camera.


“She’s no longer one of us”


Dangerous Inner Conflict:

“If I lose weight, then I will lose my friends.”


Carey’s subconscious mind will find creative ways to gain back the weight she’s lost….


“Oh no! Got sick! – gained 4 lbs”

“Oh no! Fight with love! – ate 3 pints”

“Oh no! Girls nite out! – lotsa booze”


Carey’s rubber band is still tied to a strong Pole Of Beliefs that is trying to help keep her feelings of love, safety and

belonging intact.


In order for Carey to get what she wants…


Her coach has to know how to start moving The Pole Of Beliefs, so it ALIGNS instead of holding her back.


If we as coaches don’t have the skill to do this for our clients, then no change will stick…

(...no matter how good your nutrition and wellness knowledge is!)


Why is this true?


Let’s look at your brain to find out.


The 3 Brains

•Brain Stem

•Limbic System

•Cortex


Brain Stem Or “Critter Brain”

•In charge of the physical (heart rate, breathing, blood sugar, etc)

•Constantly categorizing in terms of risk vs. safety


The “Critter Brain”

•Does NOT like change or unpredictability

•Gets set in what it knows can keep love, safety and belonging intact


This is why we have patterns…


Patterns repeat themselves.

Why?


Because to the critter brain, if you survived an experience once, that experience is worth repeating because you didn’t die the first time!


Anything new gets coded as unfamiliar

Unfamiliar = Risky = Unsafe


The Limbic System

•Generates EMOTIONS•Uses emotions to promote a sense of safety and well-being

•These emotions drive us towards or away from experiences that affect love, safety & belonging


The Cortex or “Human Brain”

•Deals with the logical, human, conscious mind

•Justifies our choices & behaviors and makes meaningout of our experiences


The Critter Brain says “No Freaking Way.”


The Limbic System loads up fear, anxiety and skepticism.


And the Cortex likes to make “sense” of the feelings.


When you ask your client, “Would you like to work together?”

Here’s what happens in their brain…


Reaction #1:

CRITTER BRAIN: Freeze. Holding the breath, tightening the gut.

LIMBIC SYSTEM: Loads up FEAR.

CORTEX: “I want to think about it, can I call you next week?”


Reaction #2:

CRITTER BRAIN: Fight

LIMBIC SYSTEM: Loads up ANGER.

CORTEX: “This is too expensive. I can’t afford it.”


Reaction #3:

CRITTER BRAIN: Flight

LIMBIC SYSTEM: Loads UP ANXIETY.

CORTEX: “I have to ask my spouse.” or “I’m not ready yet.”


The main driver of the Brain Stem or “Critter Brain” is FEAR.


The main driver of the Cortex or “Human Brain” is LOVE.


Our Human Brain is always imagining things being different and better…


While our Critter Brain is simultaneously trying to make sure everything stays the same.


Most coaches are NEVER taught this stuff!

And yet, it’s ESSENTIAL if you want to create true, lasting life-changing transformation.


People know WHAT TO DO, but they don’t always do it.


Follow through is one of the biggest obstacles coaches face with getting results!


It’s not because the coach sucks or they have the wrong ACTION STEPS….


And it’s not because the client needs more discipline or willpower….


It’s because they likely have an underlying inner conflict between the Cortex & the Critter Brain!


When you resolve the conflict between the Human Brain and the Critter Brain for your client…


You can help her BE different without her having to do any of the work!


Because all parts of her are ALIGNED!


To give you tools to help you resolve the conflict between the Critter Brain and the
