WELCOME TO THE ASCE 142NDANNUAL CIVIL

ENGINEERING CONFERENCE Global Civil Engineers:

Now and Future Generations

As Civil Engineers are trained around the globe they need not only the requisite technical skills, but also a sense of environmental stewardship and an appreciation for the social environment.

•The technical skills get taken seriously.

•Do we inspire the sense of Stewardship?

David Lapin says:

“We do work that matters.”

There are 2 sides of us – the instinct and the heroic. Are employers feeding the heroic?

We don’t really work just for money.

The FUTURE Global Engineer’s Strategic PrioritiesTaking ASCE’s strategies ONE STEP FURTHER. Presently:

InfrastructurePropose practical solutions to improve our neglected

infrastructure.

Raise the bar Establish educational and legal standards necessary to prepare

professional engineers to address the future's most pressing challenges.

SustainabilityEmbrace civil engineers' role as contributors to a sustainable

world.

InfrastructurePropose practical solutions to improve America's

neglected infrastructure.

• No question, we need technical skills.

• Is a sustainable solution possible without a sincere effort to instill a sense of infrastructure stewardship?

• Where will that sense come from?

Raise the bar Establish educational and legal standards

necessary to prepare professional engineers to address the future's most pressing challenges.

•Technical skills will improve .

•Will additional coursework inspire and instill a sense of infrastructure stewardship?

SustainabilityEmbrace civil engineers' role as contributors to a

sustainable world.Sustainability requires inspired, forward thinking

professionals dedicated to stewardship of our built and natural environment.

•Are we the best contributors we can be?•Will the Next Generation embrace it?

The Global Civil Engineer

Sustainability – Wikipedia says:“Sustainability is the capacity to endure through

renewal, maintenance, and sustenance, or nourishment...”

“For humans…, sustainability is the long-term maintenance of responsibility, which has

environmental, economic, and social dimensions, and encompasses the concept of stewardship…”

The Global Civil Engineer

Sustainability•We are asking for a change in the

way we ALL live•Far beyond the classic concept of

education.

The Global Civil Engineer

Our Role As Stewards of the Environment

1. Gain Knowledge AND WISDOM2. Be the Steward and the Voice

3. Assure that the Next Generation FollowsBE LEADERS AND MENTORS

The Global Civil Engineer•Are we the best contributors we can be?•Will the Next Generation embrace it?

• We become better contributors as we strengthen our own communication and

leadership skills•There WILL be a next generation of

enthusiastic stewards.

Our part in STEM Education(Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

•US is ranking poorly vs. other nations•US losing competitive edge on other countries•People not understanding or appreciating the

technology they use daily.

Our part in STEM Education(Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

•Outreach activities are just one part•Becoming an active community member

•Be an advocate for improvement

Why Civil Engineering Plays A Lead Role•Infrastructure technologies among the most

readily understandable•It is easy to show how important a role civil

engineering plays and how the profession helps.

How Outreach Ties to Leadership

•As we inspire others, we become leaders.•ASCE recognizes the value of K-12 outreach and

has developed great resources•Lauren will tell her story.

Civil Engineering Club - sponsored by ASCE

What is Civil Engineering Club?• After-school club for high school students

• Recommended for kids with expressed interest in engineering/STEM

• Student centered / Activity based

• Sponsored by Sections or Branches

• Vehicle for creating a sustainable partnership

Why is outreach so important for HS students?

• Creates real world connections

• Creates awareness of civil engineering

• Provides role models and dispels stereotypes

• Develops technological literacy

• Builds students’ self identification with civil engineering

Civil Engineering Club - sponsored by ASCE

What will CE Club do?

• Engineering design projects and field experiences

• Club Launch (first meeting)

• Bridges Module

• Make it Real - Make a Difference

• Site visits

“Good to know that someone else has experienced similar successes and/or problems”

“This was my first time to Mentor - sharing what other teams are doing and talking through issues was helpful”

Be a Mentor and a LeaderSTEM Education Advocacy – How it works in MA

•All of STEM in the frameworks•Engineering even has its own MCAS questions

•All schools hungry for STEM activities•Teachers often have limited knowledge of

certain STEM facets

Be a Mentor and a LeaderSTEM Education Advocacy – How it works in MA

•In-school STEM very different than after.•Agreed that schools focus on STEM as a whole

•MA divided into 7 STEM networks•Regional Employment boards take lead with

Dept of Education•All STEM Professional Societies band together

Be a Mentor and a LeaderSTEM Education Advocacy – How it works in MA•All STEM networks, education leaders and appropriate government officials meet with

Lieutenant Governor quarterly.•All in attendance VERY interested in the

viewpoint of industry.•The STEM Sox hold the viewpoint of the STEM

professionals, versus businesses.

Be a Mentor and a LeaderSTEM Education Advocacy – Food for Thought•The Lt. Governor meets with us regularly.•The Sec. of Labor, Sec. of Transp. regularly

appear at events with us•We talk to people regularly about infrastructure•STEM ED ADVOCACY IS A GREAT WAY TO COMMUNICATE INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS

A Coordinated VisionThe world is a system.

ASCE gives us a home to work together internationally.

Locally, we can all work with other STEM professional societies.

Integrate outreach into corporate culture and career paths.

The Coordinated Vision: Tough Questions

•Does the present career path of a civil engineers promote this?

•Are there enough hours in a day?•How can we assure that we have this skill set?
