All our facilities are on a single campus, which makes it a very friendly and welcoming place. Not only is it home to the workshops, spaces and lecture halls where you’ll study, it’s where you’ll eat, drink and make friends.

There’s always something happening: an exhibition, a DJ playing outside, a live performance or a charitable fundraiser. To inspire you further we’ve got a gallery, a museum and an incredibly well-stocked library.

With over 10,000 items, The Museum of Design in Plastics showcases the history of plastic. It’s the only museum of its kind in the UK and shows students just what can be achieved with great design.

In addition to creative spaces for performance such as a movement, music, recording, and acting studios, we have a fully equipped black box theatre for specialist teaching.

We also have our own professional rehearsal space in one of the most celebrated entertainment centres in the south of England; Pavilion Dance.

The University has a thriving Student Union involved in a whole host of activities such as Freshers events, beach parties, Diversity Week and cultural trips. Access to the gym, sporting facilities and individual societies is available at Bournemouth University, our neighbouring establishment, with even more opportunity to meet their international student body on a variety of courses.

With around 3000 students on full-time courses and a further 2000 on part-time courses there is a personal and friendly approach to all activities. We support new creative businesses. Our Enterprise Pavilion is a centre for new businesses and ideas. The architect-designed space provides offices, media facilities, exhibition space and meeting areas to a wide range of companies.

Graduates are offered a wide range of mentoring and support to develop their new businesses and ideas. In return these creative businesses offer work experience opportunities for our students.

As well as start up businesses, the Enterprise Pavilion is home to a regional satellite of Europe’s largest visual effects and computer animation company, Framestore. Our partnership with Framestore is fantastic proof of our commitment to finding the best jobs for our graduates.

We believe in celebrating success

Our Graduation Day is an opportunity for families to celebrate the students’ academic success in a uniquely English setting.

The ceremony takes place in the historic church of Wimborne Minster, a beautiful gothic building that’s over 1000 years’ old. The Minster has been a place of learning since 705 and Henry VII’s queen founded a school here in 1497. The organ played during the ceremony is almost 400 years old.

The presentations are made by the Chairman of the University, accompanied by the county High Sheriff, a representative of the Queen or the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset. Mayors from five neighbouring towns will be there too.

The celebrations continue back at the University where studios form a graduate showcase of final year work. You’ll have the chance to talk to tutors and celebrate more English traditions with champagne, strawberries and cream in the University gardens.

Wolfgang Tillmans, the internationally renowned photographer studied photography before going on to win the prestigious Turner Prize in 2000.

Simon Beaufoy, studied film before going on to write the screenplay for the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, which won an OSCAR for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards in Hollywood in 2009.

ourses Many people know they want to study a creative subject but are not sure which one to specialise in. We offer a range of pre-degree courses where you can experiment and ‘try out’ a range of different specialist areas. These courses will prepare you for degree study at the University or at any other University in the UK or elsewhere in the World.

One of the major benefits of studying a Preparation for Higher Education course at the University is that students are working on campus and using many of the same resources as our undergraduate and graduate students. Students are learning and experimenting in a vibrant creative atmosphere and are able to see what the degree students are studying, and speak to the Higher Education tutors regarding progression opportunities.

All international students who successfully complete any of our Preparation for Higher Education courses will be guaranteed a place at the University on the degree course in their specialist area. At a recent Ofsted inspection the Preparation for Higher Education courses were awarded the grade of ‘Outstanding’. This now means that these courses are the best in the UK.

If you wish to spend a semester developing your portfolio and capabilities in the areas of art, design and media, you can apply to join our full-time Diploma for 10- 20 weeks. You will join students preparing for entry onto BA programmes. The course is designed to give you a very strong practical knowledge and covers a wide spectrum of disciplines such as Fine Art, Painting and Drawing, Sculpture, Fashion, Textiles, Graphic Design, 3D Design, Video and Photography.

Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design 1 Year The first stage of the Art and Design course is an exploratory programme designed to increase students’ visual understanding across a range of media. Students work on a variety of projects covering four units: Art and Design Research Methods Ideas Development, Materials and Methods and Evaluation and Reflection. This part of the course is intensive and exciting and includes a range of workshops such as: 3D Design, Printmaking, Video, Animation, Life Drawing, Photography, Textiles and Mixed Media. Students gain experience of potential course areas with visits from practicing artists, designers and specialist lecturers. In the second stage students will select their area of future specialism by undertaking two units: Integrated Art and Design Research – Ideas and Methods and Preparation for Progression. The options available reflect the broad categories of study available in Higher Education. At this stage students will be regrouped and study on one of the following seven areas by set projects and assignments:

– Illustration and Animation, – Graphic Design, – Fashion, Costume and Textiles, – 3D (Art, Craft and Design), – Fine Art, – Photography, – Film Art and Production.

Diploma in Foundation Studies in Media 1 YearThe media programme is an intensive course, designed to prepare students for Higher Education study primarily in film and photography. It offers students the opportunity to experiment with a range of activities and approaches focused within media and photography in order for students to realise their individual capabilities.

The first stage of the course is an exploratory programme which has a more specific focus and emphasis in comparison to the more general Foundation Art and Design course. The course is designed to increase visual understanding through a range of 2D projects, using a variety of media such as photography, video and visual studies/drawing. In the second stage students will be regrouped and study through set projects and assignments on one of the following more specialist courses. Photography and Film Art and Production, or select from the main programme courses of the Art and Design Foundation course. Units for all three stages are the same as the main Foundation Diploma.

Diploma in Photography 1 YearThis intense one year course offers a wide range of experience and skills development across all areas of contemporary photographic practice. The range of areas covered would allow you to develop a broad portfolio of work in a short space of time. You may already be a graduate in another discipline, be seeking to enhance your career prospects, wishing to start an entirely new career, or to progress to a degree course. The nature of this course means that students are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds with a variety of talents, ambitions and experiences. The course comprises of twelve integrated units which develop a balance of technical and contextual knowledge and cover areas of traditional silver based and contemporary digital media. You would develop your skills by working both in the studio and on location and learn to present your work for exhibition and promotional purposes.

Extended Diploma in Art and Design 2 YearsThe Extended Diploma in Art and Design is a broad-based general art, design and media course. The course is designed to give students a very strong practical knowledge in a wide range of disciplines such as fine art, painting and drawing, sculpture, fashion, textiles, graphic design, 3D design, and photography.

During the first year students will have the opportunity to explore all areas of art, design and media. At the beginning of the second year students will have the opportunity to decide on their chosen course of study. Students then choose their specialist area of study from the following areas:

Semester Programmes of BA (Hons) Degree Courses

Semester Programmes enable overseas university students to attend a BA (Hons) degree course for one term or more, as part of their university or on-going studies.

Semester Programme students will work alongside full time students in either year 1 or year 2 of the degree course. Semester Programmes start in October and January each year and students can choose between 1-3 terms (10 weeks each). Entry is via application and portfolio review.

BA (Hons) 3 YearsThis highly practical course provides students who want to become professional actors with a thorough preparation for a successful career. You will learn the key skills you need to work within this demanding industry, and will be supported by our core staff in your journey to become creative, flexible and independent artists. You will explorea range of styles from classical to contemporary. As well as developing your performance skills you will learn self-motivation, self-discipline, and will look at the social, historical and cultural contexts of performance. Although academic research plays an important part within the course this is generally approached through practice, emphasising its vocational nature.

The core areas of voice, movement and singing explore a range of creative, technical and transferable skills designed to support your acting work and prepare you for the workplace. Throughout your studies there are opportunities to work on projects with students from other courses at the University, including Film, Costume with Performance Design, Animation Production, and Make-up for Media and Performance. Your progress will be closely monitored through continuous feedback and individual tutorials. We also hold regular group evaluations in which staff and students discuss the progress of a unit together.

Semester Programme 10+ WeeksStudy Abroad students can apply to join a semester programme in year 1 or year 2 of the BA (Hons) Acting course, working alongside our full time students. Semester programmes start in October and January. Entry is by application and audition.

Year 1: shows you how to start developing amethodological approach to acting relevant to Psychological Realism. Year 2: involves an in-depth exploration of classical text and performance styles through practice, research and presentations.

ANIMATION PRODUCTION

BA (Hons) 3 YearsThe art of making animated films requires a high level of practical skill, draughtsmanship, technical proficiency and a wealth of theoretical knowledge and understanding. This course looks at animation production in a broad and holistic way, providing a thoroughly intensive and team-based experience in which students develop comprehensive expertise in the whole production process. The course strives to offer the closest experience possible to that of the professional animator in industry, within its newly refurbished animation studio.

This course has a strong international reputationand has been awarded Skillset accreditation for the quality of its offering to students and the animation industry. There is an unprecedented loyalty between undergraduates and alumni who have offered recruitment to graduates. Alumni are invited back as visiting tutors which fosters a genuine feeling of community and a firmly rooted appreciation of how the real animation world operates. You will be encouraged to generate work through different means, be it traditional, computer-based or stop-motion. Whilst computer solutions are taught, all students must first learn the fundamentals by starting with animation through drawing.

BA (Hons) 3 YearsAs a student of architecture explore architecture as the reflective practice of making tangible, thoughtful, inhabited places that mediate between the individual, the world and others. A major strength of the course is its location within a specialist University with the potential for students to study alongside other creative disciplines. There are opportunities to experiment with architectural design and its methods, including drawing, photography, printmaking, modelmaking, video and electronic digital media. With this breadth of skill and experience you will be able to propose challenging and innovative places and work collaboratively with other specialisms. A network of practicing architects, engineers and designers will ensure the course’s relevance to innovative professional practices, through lectures, visits and studio projects.

The BA (Hons) Architecture Part 1 qualification is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), subject to periodic review by ARB, for the purposes of entry onto the United Kingdom Register of Architects on completion of Part 1, 2 and 3. This qualification also carries RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Part 1 Exemption, subject to periodic review.

Year 1: introduces key concepts and methods. You’ll make physical models and explore forms of representation and manipulation of architectural form by graphic, photographic and digital methods.

Master Of Architecture (MArch) 2 Years The MArch offers students exemption from the ARB Part 2 professional examination in architecture on their route to becoming a registered architect. The 2-year course asks students to build upon their academic and practical experience, whilst at the same time provides a curriculum and an environment which support the development of critical and speculative practices, including the questioning of preconceptions about the discipline. Situated within the postgraduate culture of an art, design, media and performance institution, the course draws upon communities of interdisciplinarity, promoting exchange across different domains of knowledge and skills, whether in the form of shared units, dialogue, collaborations, or methodologies and methods of production.

MANAGEMENT

BA (Hons) 3 YearsArts and Event Management is about the creation and organisation of live arts and other events – anything from art exhibitions to theatrical productions, music gigs to multi-art form festivals, dance workshops to fashion shows. In this course you will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to make such events succeed. Our aim is to support and enable you to develop as a successful arts manager, able to work at the forefront of the arts and creative industries.

Theory, technique and practice will underpin each year of study. Most professional arts and event management is undertaken in teams and we replicate that on the course; groups will work together on briefs to devise, develop and deliver an arts–based event each year. You will firstly learn more about the arts and then develop the necessary business and technical skills to become a successful arts and event management professional. Everything is taught from the arts manager’s perspective, and the course is practice led. The practical content of the course is a unique and defining feature of your study; student teams get to commission, produce, direct and manage an arts project from start to finish. You will be encouraged to develop your specialist art form interests and all events you organise will be ‘live’.

Semester Programme 10+ Weeks Study Abroad students can apply to join a semester programme in year 1 or year 2 of the BA (Hons) Arts and Event Management course, working alongside our full time students. We place specific focus on developing a conceptual understanding of performance design. This is a diverse and demanding subject; students need to be interested in art, design and all types of performance to support the study of the diverse array of genres they will encounter within this course: including theatre, film, television, ballet, opera and the study of new performance disciplines.

You will engage with both costume and set design and costume making. Whilst our graduates may not pursue a career in both design and making, we truly believe that the knowledge and awareness gained of the overall production process during the first stage of the course is what sets our students apart and gives them an edge in industry. The University is a very exciting place to study; you will work alongside students from the Film, Make-Up, and Acting courses on staged and filmed productions. BA (Hons) 3 YearsThis course provides practical experience of the many aspects of filmmaking, both live action drama productions and documentaries. Our aim is to produce graduates who will progress to key creative and production roles in mainstream film production. You will gain a contextual understanding of the entire process of film production and the relationship between all its constituent roles and stages including design, editing, sound, cinematography, production and direction.

The result will be the production of visually exciting and engaging films, entertaining and challenging audiences. This is a course for all film production specialists and produces top–quality graduates with a range of skills and a practical, realistic and commercial outlook. The course is well resourced with professional filmmaking equipment for each part of the process from pre-production to delivery of completed films. The course focuses on observing and understanding the needs of people within spaces and environments and explores alternative solutions to contemporary design problems.

From day one you will be regarded as a member of a design team and will be briefed accordingly, with clear objectives and deadlines. Tuition is offered in visual communication skills including technical and free drawing, modelmaking and digital skills using a range of software. You will develop your ability in the use of materials and finishes, texture and colour, and gain an understanding of construction techniques and building regulations as well as health and safety issues.

As you progress through the course you will gradually assume the role of a professional designer to define your direction and specialismin this increasingly diverse profession. BA (Hons) 3 YearsThis course provides experience in a diverse spectrum of professional make-up contexts within performance, film and television. The main aim of the course is to produce creative, dedicated professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to gain employment in the creative and performance industries. In addition to developing your specialist skills within a creative community of artists and practitioners, you will study the historical and contemporary contexts relevant to the work of today’s make-up artist.

The make-up artist is an important member of any production team working in film, television, stage or fashion. Your ability to work in a team will be tested and developed during your studies. The course will mix live, practical, theoretical and work-based learning and provides opportunities to work with students studying Acting, Film Production, Costume, Modelmaking and Fashion on ‘live’ collaborative projects. The course includes make-up and hair design for historical and contemporary drama, special effects and prosthetic make-up for film and television, contemporary make up for performance including ballet, opera, music, dance, catwalk and runway.

The emphasis of the course is on make-up for performance and there will be opportunities to develop skills in make-up styling with the potential for additional collaborative projects with fashion and photography students.

You will develop technical and aesthetic abilities, experiencing a wide variety of processes and materials in carrying out a range of challenging and interesting briefs – working both physically and digitally in three dimensions. The role of modelmaking is rapidly changing and increasingly model-makers are required totake responsibility for project management in broad areas of media production, architectural interpretation and exhibition design. MA Architecture: Spatial PracticesThe MA Architecture: Spatial Practices course engages you in the potential and complexities of space and spatial design. You might come to the program with a degree in architecture, interior design, landscape design, urban design or planning, or you may have studied subjects from across the humanities, arts, and social sciences including geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology, fine art and performance. MA FashionMA Fashion focuses on design innovation within the global context. You will develop unique fashion products whilst engaging with contemporary branding concepts, notions of creative business incubation, cross-discipline participation as well as ethical and sustainability issues. The course will appeal to you if you wish to not only create fashion products – which evolve through risk taking, experimentation and critical analysis – but also to explore how to brand and market your products in an international environment. MA Fine ArtThe Fine Art pathway will enable you to develop your practice as an artist within a supportive, analytical and critical environment. You will examine your existing position and art practice at the outset of the course and through personal reflection and tutorial advice and guidance you will formulate a structured plan of practice and research. You will be encouraged to focus on the relevance and meaning of materials and process, the potentials of site and display, and the interpretation of your work by audiences. Ideas are generated through research, scholarly activity and conceptual enquiry and brought to realisation in an individual body of work that is tested in the public domain. Students engage with one another in the practice and research of art. Discussion and presentation of ideas and the examination of outcomes form the basis for learning.

MA Interactive MediaThe Interactive Media pathway is designed to help both artists and designers to develop and refine their practice in and through the wide range of digital media that now comprise the “new media-space”. This pathway is of particular relevance for practitioners wishing to engage directly with new media and the technologies that define our time. It provides the support necessary for such personal professional development: an informed critical environment, the use of professional creative design methodologies, exposure to industry-standard design and development processes – all in a pathway underpinned by internationally appropriate research methods and with the support of experienced practitioners. Areas of continuing interest that provide starting points for individual work include non-linear narrative, multimedia synaesthetics and future-casting and design.

MA Graphic DesignOne reason why Graphic Design is so exciting is that it is difficult to define. The course celebrates the freedom of this uncertainty by providing a structure through which to explore graphic design practice in relation to the social, commercial and cultural questions that you choose. Whether you are interested in branding, user-centred design, future scoping, experimental typography, mapping, visual narrative, the materiality of graphic communication, social networking, graphic design history,or some other area relating to graphic design practice or theory, there are opportunities for you on the course.

You will develop a project alongside other graphic designers on the pathway and in a community of students and lecturers from such disciplines as photography, fine art, and architecture. This brings a unique flavour to the course enabling you to cross boundaries and to evaluate ideas arising from your project in the context of a broader network of practices.

MA IllustrationThis MA in Illustration encourages you to question the conventions and habits of your own illustration practice and test your thinking by engaging with and participating in the dynamic dialogue that emerges from this particular MA experience. You will examine your illustration practice, exploring ideas relating to audience, artifice, reputation, body and site. The course is exciting because of the possibilities to consider the specific nature and location of your own practice in relation to other creative practitioners from other subject areas such as Fine Art, Costume, Animation or Photography. It is through this expansive discourse that you will be able to identify, examine and finally demonstrate and progress your creative concerns and visual language as an illustrator.

MA PhotographyThe Photography pathway understands and celebrates a photographic practice that is an increasingly demanding, diverse, complex, challenging and compelling experience. You will engage in a practice that recognises the importance of a multitude of processes through to digital imaging, and will have a desire to investigate and represent social and cultural imperatives. You will generate ideas that can be expressed in a wide diversity of outcomes; your work might be time-based, sculptural, site-specific, or address issues raised by the document or other traditional means of representation. Practice is underpinned by history and theory, with analytical and critical reflection supporting you in your consideration of the context, audience and professional relevance of your practice in an independent, or commercially structured, environment.

MA Animation Production* This course will enable students to refine and invigorate their working practices in animation. It is aimed at students who have achieved a bachelor’s degree in animation and/or related practices. It will offer you the opportunity to engage in rigorous and detailed specialisation through the production of a film or body of animation work.

The MA in Animation Production delivers three interlinked strands of Creative Practice, Contextualising Theory and Professional Practice and each unit will test these attributes to the highest levels.

The MA in Animation Production builds on our highly successful Skillset approved BA (Hons) in Animation Production. Students on this new masters course will benefit from engagement with one the the most active and exciting animation discipline clusters in the UK.

Note: This course will replace the current award of MA Animation which will continue until September 2013.

MA Arts Management Practice*This course is aimed at students with an understanding of arts management, who wish to extend their study and those from a creative production background, who wish to develop skills in production management. It is also suitable for those wishing to get an understanding of different types and styles of management practice and the implications that they have on creative production. This MA seeks to draw together the realities of creative production and practice and the best of management thinking and theory. It will look at a strategic skillsets – e.g. creative vision, finance, leadership and marketing and the historic, social and political contexts that artists and organisations operate in.

This will include production contexts such as indoor, outdoor, commissioned and educational work. Students will be encouraged to work with an agreed host partner arts organisation which may be of their choosing or drawn from the University’s well established networks. The MA seeks to examine and identify good management practice. It will enable students and the creative organisations they study sustain and develop their productive capacity through innovative thinking and leading industry practice.

MA Film Production*This course is for students who have achieved a bachelor’s degree in film production or related studies and who wish to attain higher level, industry relevant , professional skills in distinct pathways in either Directing, Producing , Scriptwriting or craft skills such as Cinematography and Editing. This 12 month intensive course is focused on high level vocational practice underpinned by in-depth understanding of the industry.

The MA in Film Production builds on our highly successful Skillset approved BA (Hons) in Film Production and students on this new masters course will benefit from engagement with one the most active and exciting film courses in UK.

Programme Of StudyStudents register full-time in the first instance for an MPhil degree and following successful completion, for a PhD (usually a total of three years). The format of study is very different from a taught degree. As a research student you will engage in a programme of individual and independent research and / or creative work which is guided through regular meetings with your Director of Studies and other assigned supervisors. The research interests and publications of our Research Supervisors can be found on our website.

You will be supported to clearly define what is original and innovative about your research and how best to present and disseminate your arguments and findings. This might take the form of a written text (thesis) or be combined with creative outputs. You will also participate in a programme of research methods training, someof which will take place at the University of the Arts London. There are also opportunities to participate in workshops on topics such as presentation and writing skills. Research degree students are encouraged to integrate their work within the flourishing research culture of the University.

Fashion Design 3 WeeksThis course encourages the development of individual design identity to further inform and focus a designer’s creative vision for fashion. You will develop the technical skills of fashion design, including pattern cutting and garment manufacture, while exploring the cultural and commercial contexts of fashion. You will develop your communication skills, building a body of design work and garment samples to add to your portfolio.

Film Making 3 WeeksCreated for media students and those with a keen interest in all aspects of filmmaking, this intensive course provides you with a comprehensive introduction to the technical and creative skills required within the industry. You will learn key techniques and creative approaches covering a range of areas from the technical basics of cinematography, using industry standard cameras and developing a working knowledge of the lighting, gripping and sound recording equipment used by the professionals.

You’ll learn more about the latest industry developments from respected visiting tutors from our Industry Liaison Group and use professional filmmaking equipment for each part of the process from pre-production to delivery of completed films.

Costume Design 3 WeeksGain a unique insight into how the process of costume for performance evolves. Through tutorials, demonstrations and workshops you will learn all about British costume from the 17th to 20th century, examine authenticgarments and learn the terminology used by costume designers. There will also be excursion opportunities to costume museums allowing you access to specialist period costume collections to further shape your knowledge and understanding.

Acting For Stage and Screen: An Introduction 1 weekThe BA (Hons) Acting department have developed this one-week intensive foundation course to provide an introduction into acting techniques and approaches to character; including textual analysis, scene study, voice work and movement skills. Students will have the opportunity to develop existing skills and learn how to adapt them for film and television. The course will also cover audition techniques, sight-reading, what to expect on set with the opportunity to film short scenes.

Art + : Creative Printing Techniques / Creative Printmaking 1 weekThis practical, workshop-based course is aimed at individuals with an interest in developing their creative potential and exploring traditional and contemporary printing techniques. Offering an experimental approach to printmaking, it encourages creative expression and the development of design identity from idea to printed image. From ‘Intaglio Printing’ to experimenting with relief printing, mono printing, lino and collograph techniques, you will develop your knowledge of a variety of printing methods using mixed media.

Introduction to Make-Up, Special Effects & Prosthetics 3 weeksAs a make–up artist, it is important to understand the tools of the trade. Our range of make-up summer courses deliver specialist knowledge of make-up and hair work for film and performance. Interior Design 3 weeksExplore the design process and be introduced to spatial and conceptual issues within interior design with this practical course. The course combines workshops, group projects and excursion visits to explore the fundamentals of interior design and how to develop ideas from concept to finished presentation board. There will be inspirational lectures, as well as talks on colour and texture. Throughout the course you will work through practical projects and activities and gain the skills, knowledge and commercial awareness to work on industry-standard briefs.

Architecture 3 weeksThrough a series of workshops, lectures and visits, you will explore the fundamental principles of architecture and design, using both traditional and contemporary analytical skills. Taught by members of the BA (Hons) Architecture faculty you will have access to 3D workshops, manufacturing equipment and a specialised library. The course culminates with the preparation of a professional portfolio.

Textile Design and Development 3 weeksThe course is aimed at textile / fashion design students and designers who want to improve or diversify their design portfolio, adapt their skills or learn new ones. It will support and enhance your existing design abilities and complement your pattern cutting skills. You will explore traditional and emerging techniques in textile technology and surface embellishment including pleating, crushing, creasing, shibori, embossing, coating,bonding and lamination combined with resist methods. You will learn techniques and design processes used in the couture embroidery industry; starting from the initial design through to development and completion of your final piece.

Photography 1-5 weeksOur portfolio of summer photography courses is designed to cater for every level of competence; from complete novice to advanced photographer; there is a programme to fit your ability. Each of the weekly courses can be combined to make a fully immersive experience.Areas covered include The Photographic Studio, Landscape Photography, Photographic Location and Advanced Digital Photography. Working with industry professionals and academics you will study different aspects of photography and will be encouraged to develop your own creative style.

Animation 3 weeksLearn how to use a variety of animation techniques including drawn, cut-out, pixilation and 3D model animation to produce a range of creative and innovative animated sequences. Using industry-standard software you will develop your critical visual skills, whilst learning about the historical, theoretical, and contextual underpinnings that frame our visual culture. You will progress through basic modelling, motion and rendering exercises through to the completion of a short 3D computer animated film of your own design by the end of the course.

English + Art and Design 4 week courseA four-week English + Art and Design course is available all year for groups of ten students or more, who need to improve their English or prepare a portfolio of work. Combining general English with specialist art and design-related disciplines, you will develop skills, such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and expression. Through hands-on practical sessions you will work in our studios to produce work within the areas of Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion, Jewellery, Animation and Architecture.

Attending an InterviewInterviews are an opportunity for you to demonstrate your self-motivation and commitment to a chosen area of study, to discuss aspects of the course and to ask any questions that you may have. Interviews usually take place between late December andMay. If you are selected for interview and are currently in the UK you will be notified by email (you can ask to reschedule the interview at thispoint if necessary).

For most courses, you will be required to bring a portfolio of work as part of your interview and you will be sent a specific portfolio guidance sheet with your invitation to interview. As a general guide, portfolios should contain examples of work (both finished and work in progress) that showcase your particular skills and interests. The content of a portfolio should be presented in a logical, ordered and simple fashion.

You should refer to the ‘Interviews and Portfolios’ section for the course you are interested in on our website for more information about requirements.

If you are living overseas but are temporarily in the UK and are able to attend an interview or are willing to travel for an interview, a date can be set to suit your timetable. Please ensure that you contact the International Office well in advance of your visit and if you wish to have an interview you must send in your application form in advance. However, we recognise that it may not be possible for you to attend an interview at the University or at one of the education fairs that we attend each year in various countries. In such cases we will accept a postal application and telephone or Skype interview.

Postal ApplicationsIt is advisable to prepare your portfolio well in advance so that you have one ready when you receive your portfolio request by email. You can refer to the courses section on the University website to download the specific portfolio requirements for your chosen course.

As a potential artist or designer we are interested in how you translate ideas visually for others. If you have some experience of art and design or you are applying for specialist or higher level courses, you should be able to assemble a portfolio which demonstrates range, experience and potential. Drawings, paintings, sketches, three dimensional models, and photographs as examples of your work should be copied onto a CD and packaged carefully for posting. Alternatively you may wish to send your work by email or use a data sharing site such as WeTransfer or refer us to your website if you have your own site. If you are applying for a media based course, a DVD of examples of your work is also recommended.

A portfolio of work must support all applications for the courses at the University, with the exception of the BA (Hons) Arts and Event Management course, where details of experience and/or interest in the area of the arts would be necessary. A Skype or telephone interview will be offered for applicants to this course. Applicants for the BA (Hons) Acting course who are unable to attend an interview/audition in person will be asked to submit a filmed audition of a set script (for example 10 lines of a Shakespeare play) on DVD. Details of the audition requirements are sent on application. Due to the high number of applications that we receive we are unable to return any individual portfolios so please do not send any work that cannot be replaced.

Students Who Require a VisaThe University (listed as the Arts University College at Bournemouth) is on the official United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA ) sponsors register as an ‘A’ rated Highly Trusted Sponsor.
