EWM– Steve Fleming

Status

• EWM is back at a manageable level

• We received an additional $20,000 WDNR grant

• 2013 survey did a great job of finding EWM

• 2013 chemical treatment and manual removal were very effective

• Following three pages show three maps of where we were one year

ago to where we are now.

EWM Plan for 2014 & Lessons Learned – Steve Fleming

1. It all starts with finding the plants

• New survey company, Onterra, provides a more thorough

survey and better technology. Three surveys per year.

1. Pretreatment

2. Early Summer

3. Peak Biomass in late Summer.

• Adopt a Shoreline remains critical

2. For small colonies – manually remove

3. For colonies that cannot be manually removed, chemically treat

We treated / manually removed all known EWM locations in June, 2014

Thanks you very much for all those who volunteer!

EWM Management is ALL OF OUR RESPONSIBILITIES!

It is here to stay….we need to manage it!

We are sure there is more EWM than is shown on the map

• Learn to identify EWM!

• If people are working around your dock removing plants,

offer to help. Offer to help carry away plants if nothing

else.

• Get involved!

We continue to learn!!

Flowering Rush – Steve Fleming

Goal: Do research to find method for managing flowering rush.

Once found, utilize the method throughout Archibald Lake

Accomplishments

• 2011 – Did chemical trials with two chemicals (Renovate Max G and

Aquathol K).

• 2012 results: Renovate Max G saw a 59% reduction in plant

density. Aquathol K, no significant reduction

• 2013 – Repeated trials with larger areas of Renovate Max G and

Diquat

• Map showing 2013 treatment areas is on the next page

• 2014 results: 62% reduction with Renovate Max G and 86%

reduction with Diquat

• Control Area– No Change

year to year

• Max G – 62% reduction.

2011 was 59%. Minimal

reduction in emerged

plants

• Diquat – 86% reduction.

Requires 2 treatments per

year to be effective.

Flowering Rush - Summary of What We Learned to Date

• Renovate Max G

• Works well for submerged plants (77% reduction)

• Small impact on emerged plant if you catch it early (25%)

• Probably due to waxy coating that forms on plant when it emerges

• Diquat

• Works well on submergent and emergent plants (86%)

• Requires two treatments per year to impact rhizomes

• The second is in the summer when natives are growing more.

• Current research indicates 3-5 years of treatment is necessary to deplete

rhizomes

• Sent rhizomes and leaf materials to Montana and Switzerland for biocontrol

analysis. At least 8 – 10 years off…..if it works

Summary of Invasives– Steve Fleming

• Eradication is an unlikely outcome for EWM or Flowering Rush

• There will likely be more invasives

• Our best course of action is:

1. Don’t let it get in – Clean Boats / Clean Waters

2. If it does get in, find it early and keep it small – Adopt a

Shoreline and Surveys – Don’t slack off here!

3. If it gets established – More aggressive approaches, like

chemical treatment are required.

4. Continue manual removal efforts for small areas on all

invasives
