Recyclability

Paper for Recycling

Deinking ProcessINGEDE Thematic Pillars –

General Trends

• Higher diversity of printing technologies

• New Inks in conventional printing

• New converting technologies and materials

Recyclability Paper for Recycling Deinking Process

• Declining share of graphic products in Household collection

• Declining availability of deinking grades

• Increasing use in “white fiber based” packaging

• Increasing share of board in deinking grades

• Increasing load of non‐paper components

• High ash content

• Decreasing brightness potential

• Increasing problems with “stickies”

INGEDE Symposium 2019

Recyclability

Paper for Recycling

Deinking ProcessRecyclability Case A –

Pressure Sensitive Labels

• Recovered paper contains increased amountsof pressure sensitive labels

• The adhesives typically used for PSL are hardly separable in paper recycling processand stay “sticky” with heavy impact on

– Paper production process

– Paper machine maintenance

– Final paper quality

Thus stickers are not recyclable and INGEDE has raised thechallenge and pushed suppliers to find a solution

Hear good news today!

Recyclability

Paper for Recycling

Deinking ProcessRecyclability Case B –

UV Cured Prints

• UV cured inks in most cases lead to dirt specks in paper produced from recovered paper due to

– too little fragmentation,

– too little hydrophobicity

• UV curing with “environmental friendly” drying (e. g. LED) does at least not support to solve the problem

• INGEDE has raised the topics many times, which finally led to increased research activities at printing ink manufacturers

Hear good news today!

Deinking ProcessRecyclability Case C –

INDIGO Liquid Toner Prints

• Already in 2001, problems with Indigo liquid toner were identified by CTP

• “Accidental Mill Trial”: Significant damage at a paper mill with small amount of Indigo printer waste was reported already in 2010

• Several incidents at different mills and negative recyclability tests

• INGEDE has raised the topic many times and “…COPACEL, FEDEREC, UNIIC and HP call on printers to implement a separate collection of waste and scrap from HP Indigo technology prints…” in July 2018

• Availability of graphic paper for recycling– Balanced availability in 2018 with support from CHINA

– Increased production of “white fiber based” packaging (e. g. white top liner) requires additional share of graphic papers from the graphic loop

INGEDE in 30 Years

• Commonly financed research on deinking process, collection and recyclability of printed products to support the success of increased of Recycling Rate in Europe

• Successful against the threat of water based flexographic printing spreading over Europe

• Raising awareness and triggering improvements at new threats, e. g. UV, inkjet, liquid toner, PSA

• Providing orientation for printers and converters to improve recyclability by defining methods and financing surveys, resulting in assessment schemes and ecolabel criteria

• Developing standards to secure quality of PfR at the mills
