March 2019 Welcome to the 2019 Season! I hope everyone is looking forward to a pretty full schedule of events, both on and off the trail. Before we get into everything though, I guess I should introduce myself to those of you who don’t know me. My name is Lisa Horowitz (LisaH311 on the forum), and I joined Baystate in August of 2016, after moving up to Massachusetts from NYC. Before I joined Baystate, the only wheeling I had done was sandy beach driving in Long Island, and really, the most maneuvers my JKU had seen was cutting the wheel as sharply as possibly, while trying to parallel park a 4-door and cram it into a tiny parking spot. I currently live in Worcester and I’m a paramedic for UMass Memorial Worcester EMS. I really started becoming a more active member last year, taking advantage of finally having every weekend off and going on a bunch of Baystate runs, open runs that other NEA clubs host, and some NEA events, including, Fall Crawl. It’s been a blast not only wheeling on the trails, but just getting to know other members, joking around, laughing, and hanging out, off the trails as well. Since day one, you all have been welcoming, and for all the new folks, please don’t feel intimidated. No one is here to watch you fail or hoping that you break your Jeep. The supportive nature of this club really makes it special, and there are plenty of people who will do their best to 1) avoid getting you into a bad situation in the first place and 2) do everything they can to get you out of it. It’s always a team effort, so listen to the spotter, and even if you’re not the one who needs help, getting out and watching is just as important. You will always learn something on a trail ride, that’s for sure. This year, there have been some pretty awesome changes taking place, all with the intent of getting people more involved in the club. With that said, it’s one of the reasons I jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the newsletter. Not only will Tracks Newsletter consist of trail write-ups and Jeep- specific articles, but I’m hoping for off-trail stories, member spotlights, unique mods people have done to their Jeep, off-season stories, a new puppy you just rescued, camping gear reviews, wilderness first aid tips, and lots more. I would more than appreciate if all of you would submit articles or even just shoot me suggestions of what you would like to see in Tracks. Again, it does not have to be Jeep related in the least. Send me anything. Recipes, a new deck

you built, a poem about your lost 10mm socket. Memes. Maybe your son or daughter drew a picture of a Jeep. I’ll happily add it to Tracks! I’d love to hear from all of you as to your ideas. It would be a great way to get to know each other, as well. Please PM me on the forum or email your submissions at [email protected]. I look forward to this coming year and seeing you all out on the trails!

Social Media

Baystate now has an Instagram page @BaystateJeepers, and if you have any photos please tag and/or hashtag Baystate. If your profile is private, feel free to PM photos directly to the account and they’ll get posted. The reason I pushed for an Instagram page was because we all like to take pictures and videos while we’re out on the trails, so it makes sharing them easy. It also helps put a face and name to the Jeep and respective owner. Additionally, Baystate has two Facebook pages. One is the public one “Baystate Jeepers” and the other one that requires approval from the moderators, is “BSJ Members.” The BSJ Members Facebook page is private and will need to be approved by the admins. This group page is where you can see your

fellow club members and post pictures and comment and tag each other’s Jeeps.

Adventures with BEV

This year, Tracks will have a new section, dedicated to Matt Janchar and his 2016 JKU Rubicon. Matt has two teenage sons, is a Boy Scout leader, and he has built and designed his Jeep around his passion for everything outdoors. BEV stands for Boy Scout Expedition Vehicle and it took him a year to design before the build even started. Matt is always working on a project, and his Jeep is set up for some amazing overland adventures. “Adventures with BEV” will be a monthly column on his projects, carnage (haha), camping trips, involvement with the Boy Scouts, and lots more.

Dogs in Jeeps

Name: Blue

Owner: Lisa Horowitz

Breed: Siberian Husky (rescued)

Age: 2.5 years old

Hobbies include the following: Singing at all hours of the day and night, bringing sticks in from outside and chewing them into little pieces and leaving them all over the dining room rug, belly rubs, and eating Twizzlers. She likes to sleep upside down with both of her front legs sticking up in the air. She always loves riding in the Jeep and has even been to MaBell and Summit.

Please send your submissions of your dogs (or any pet) in, on, or next to your Jeeps to [email protected]. Don’t forget to include a little bit about them!

Future Issues This is just a little preview of what is to come in the upcoming Tracks Newsletter. A large portion of Tracks depends on submissions from each of you. Here are some ideas for upcoming issues. If any of you have suggestions, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I also urge the newer members to get involved. Member Spotlights: Write up a Bio about yourself and/or family. Talk about your Jeep, why you joined the club. Mods you’ve made to your Jeep, Future mods. We’d love to get to know who you are. Jeep Builds: Write up a parts list and what you’ve put into your Jeep. Include photos. Before and After photos. Unique mods: Maybe you have an interesting feature you added to your Jeep that others might find useful or interesting. Again, photos and instructions are always great. Wrench Section/Installs/Upgrades Carnage: Let’s see what you broke and how you fixed it! Non-Baystate Jeep trips or adventures Product Reviews Kid’s Corner: Submit your child’s Jeep artwork, etc. Non-Jeep Submissions are welcome, as well! If you have an awesome recipe, want to submit a poem, or write about activities you do outside of Jeeping such as hiking, mountain biking, surfing, etc., please send them to me. If you are involved in any charities or organizations you want to write about, submit those as well. I hope to hear from you all!
