CLASS/LAB CONFLICTS: Because we rehearse only 4-5 hours a week, it is important that every member be present for every rehearsal. In recent years, we have seen a surge in the number of class conflicts, and that significantly holds back the daily progress of the band. While we do not expect you to build your schedule completely around the band, we have to trust that everyone is making every effort to avoid all class conflicts. Permitted class conflicts must meet all 3 of the following criteria:

• The class must be required in your major (not an elective)

• The class must have only one section offered • You may not miss more than one hour of

rehearsal per week because of your class If your conflict does not meet these three criteria, please resolve the conflict in your schedule before band camp. Jobs or regularly scheduled meetings are not considered class conflicts and will not be excused.

INSTRUMENT: We w i l l p rov ide p i cco los , mellophones, baritones, sousaphones and tenor saxes. All wind players must provide their own mouthpieces, lyres, and flip folders (no exceptions!). Piccolos must also have a lyre (“Flutists Friend” works well). For trombones, the bell clamp-on lyre, “DEG HC250” (or similar), works well. Lyres are provided for school-owned baritones, mellophones, and tenor saxes. You will need lots of extra pages in your flip folder (20+). Please take care of these needs prior to arriving at MSU by visiting a local music store.

REHEARSAL ATTIRE: For all rehearsals, please wear a T-Shirt, shorts, socks, and athletic shoes. Please do not wear flip flops, sandals, Chacos, boots, high heels, dress shoes, hiking boots, etc. for marching.

MARCHING UNIFORM SHOES: The Famous Maroon Band will wear BLACK, plain-toe, lace up band shoes and black crew length (or longer) socks for performances. No shiny, patent leather shoes; only the smooth, matte finish is acceptable. No “short” socks, and absolutely no tennis shoes! A band shoe supplier will be available to fit you during band camp if you need to purchase shoes. Shoes cost approximately $47.00, and payment must be made to the shoe company at the time of ordering. Cash or money orders are accepted. NO CHECKS OR CREDIT CARDS.

Important Marching Band Information

SUMMER UNIFORM: All members will be issued the new summer uniform during band camp. All students must provide white (or mostly white) athletic shoes and ankle (short) white socks to wear with our summer performance uniform.

FEES: A $95.00 Band Membership fee will be added to your university account to cover the purchase of a uniform dri-fit supplement, summer uniform, t-shirt, ball cap, dry cleaning of the uniform 3 times during the season, and some meals at camp.

PERCUSSION: All percussionists will report to the band hall Tuesday, August 6th at 9:00am. The percussion instructor, Dr. Jason Baker, may be contacted at [email protected] with any questions that you may have. Percussionists should reserve 4:30 – 6:00pm each day for band. Section rehearsals will be on Wednesday immediately after band for one hour.

GUARD: All guard members should reserve 4:00-6:00 pm Monday through Friday for band rehearsal.

“First Day” Instructions for New Members Living On Campus

New member band registration begins at 8:00 am on Sunday, August 11th. Dorm check-in begins at 8:30 am that same day. New band members should do their best to arrive at the band hall early on the 11th to complete band registration and then go to dorm check-in at Humphrey Coliseum immediately after. It may be necessary for your parents, friends, etc. to get your things into your dorm while you report to band rehearsal later that afternoon.

DIETARY NEEDS If you have any dietary restrictions, please contact

Mr. Corhern at the band office immediately! We will do our best to accommodate and assist, but we cannot help you if we do not know what your situation is!

YOU MUST REGISTER FOR MARCHING BAND THIS SUMMER!

In order for us to plan appropriately for the fall, you must be registered for marching band (MU 2511) by Monday, July 1!

You will be removed from our roster unless you communicate with us directly about your situation.

I’ve been involved on campus since my freshman year and the FMB is by far the best organization. There are so many awesome experiences to be had you just can’t find anywhere else, like “football in paradise” and getting about 30 new brothers from the tuba section. Enjoy your time, Hail State, and welcome to the FMB Family!

Sarah McClain, Tuba—Senior, Biomedical Engineering

Cheering on the Dawgs in Davis Wade Stadium is incredible. Witnessing the atmosphere of passion for MSU during pregame for the first time is something I will never forget. The FMB brings so many exciting opportunities to meet others and travel with some of your closest friends. Cherish each moment!

Jessica Huffman, Guard—Junior, Industrial Engineering

I remember attending a football game here my senior year of high school and seeing the FMB march onto the field, and all I could think was that I knew I wanted to be a part of that. Now, here I am, living and loving life with the FMB. It’s become an experience like never before, taking me to three major cities within six months, one being in California 2000 miles away. This program gives you memories that you’ll remember the rest of your life. The friends you make, the events you attend, and the environment you’re surrounded by are all absolutely fascinating. And when you’re on Scott Field looking up at 67,000+ fans, the only thing you can do is smile.

Payton Burns, Trumpet—Sophomore, Information Technology Services

Cheering for the Dawgs while traveling with your closest friends is the best part of being in the FMB. Yes, you will work hard, but all that work pays off at every game and performing event. The FMB will not only help you grow, but it will let you experience memories that will last forever. Welcome to the FMB and HAIL STATE!!!

Ryen Greer, Piccolo—Junior, Animal and Dairy Science

Hey everyone! The Lambda Phi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha would like to say welcome to all of the new and returning members of the Famous Maroon Band. For those that do not know, Phi Mu Alpha is a men’s social fraternity founded on the basis of advancing music in America. We have a diverse organization with a wide variety of majors, and also have people who are active in other organizations on campus. Since being founded in 1963, the Lambda Phi chapter has seen numerous people cross through and have since become the longest concurrent chapter in the state. We also do service projects not only around campus, but in the community of Starkville as well. In the past, we have helped with symphony concerts, helped with the MSU Honor Band, and performed at a local nursing home. We also do various brotherhood activities such as cookouts and chapter lunches that happen throughout the year. Joining Phi Mu Alpha will not only be a good way to meet new people but will also help create lifelong friends and memories. Starting at band camp, more information will be relayed so you can learn more about Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us personally via email at [email protected], or you can add us on social media and ask us there! We will be posting recruitment events closer to band camp, so follow us to ensure that you don’t miss out! We look forward to seeing all of you at band camp! Hail State!
