Solidify Your College Options
• What to Consider Well-roundedness of academic programs; size and location; commuter vs.
dormitory; campus life; total cost of attendance; financial aid and scholarship opportunities; FIND THE RIGHT FIT!
Keep a range of choices when applying within CUNY, SUNY and the Private sector.
• Attend Open House Programs/Info Sessions/VisitNaviance calendar and Murrow websiteMeet & Greet sessions in the College OfficeTake a campus tour, speak with an admissions counselor, sit in on a class
of interest, read the student newspaper, talk to students and faculty

Factors that Colleges Consider When Reviewing Prospective Students
• Overall academic record (transcript) Challenging coursework (i.e. AP, Honors) Academic achievement in a range of courses and overall GPA;
Murrow averages are converted to a 4.0 scale -ex.: Minus 55 from average: 95-55 = 4.0 A; 85-55 = 3.0 B; 75-55=2.0 C
• Test Scores (SAT, ACT, APs, Regents)
• Resume of activities Leadership Qualities through Extracurricular activities in various school and
community activities
• Essay
• Letters of Recommendation
• Demonstrated interest (a growing trend)

– Transcripts are sent directly from DOE by OSIS
– 6 choices for one fee of $65
– SAT/ACT scores are sent by the student directly from the testing agency using code 2950.

• Complete the Application for Admission
• Pay the application fee = $50 per campus choice
• Fee waivers are available for 7 campuses
• Complete Supplemental Applications
• Send supporting documentation to campuses
• Check with individual campuses for specific deadlines

• Apply to a maximum of 10 private/out of state public colleges

• Non-Common App colleges – go directly to the college website
• Strive to finalize applications by mid-December

Naviance & The Application Process
• Acts as a College Application Manager
• Link between the Common Application and the College Office
• Many non-Common App schools are able to receive electronic documents via the Naviance portal.
• Matching process grants permission for College Office to send documentation through an online portal
• Submission of online documentation is the sole way in which this process will be handled.
• Your child needs to understand the importance of using Naviance!
Matching Common App with Naviance Family Connection
• First, in Common App fill out the “Education” section
• Second, Under “My Colleges” tab– Click on “Recommenders and FERPA”– Click on “Release Authorization”– FERPA Privacy Law Waiver.
» Complete once; yes/no question.
• Lastly, sign into NAVIANCE “Colleges I’m Apply to”– Enter email address and DOB
Matching Complete! The College Office will then have access to your information and can
therefore send all of your documents electronically.

What Is Early Decision and Early Action?
• Early Decision– Apply to one college choice– Deadline date of Nov. 1/Nov. 15– Binding Contract – upon acceptance, you MUST attend
• Early Action– Apply to your college choice– Deadline date of Nov. 1/Nov. 15– Non-binding Contract – you can apply to additional

• You have plenty of time to finalize your college essay, testing and pressing submit on your applications!
• Strive to finalize all applications by mid to late December
• Be aware of college deadlines – some may have priority deadlines

The Importance of Senior Year
• Meet with your guidance counselor
• Continue taking challenging courses
• Colleges will evaluate your first semester grades
• Continue volunteering
• Research scholarships

• CUNY TUITION IS $6,730 PER YEAR (4 yr. college)
• SUNY TUITION IS $6,870. WITH ROOM/BOARD/ALL EXPENSES, THE TUITION IS APPROXIMATELY $21,790.
• PRIVATE & OUT OF STATE TUITION CAN RANGE FROM $23,000 -$60,000 PER YEAR. THE AVERAGE COST IS $50,000.

Balancing Parental Input in the College Admissions Process
• Help to narrow search, prepare and solidify a list of college choices
• Visit, Visit, Visit!!
• Allow your child to dream and apply to the schools of their choice, while keeping a selection of safety schools
• Encourage your child to apply to a range of choices within CUNY, SUNY and Private
• Do not stress your child to declare a major.
• Don’t limit their choices based on a price tag. Be there for support and guidance
