Since 1987, he’s been involved in events from Grande Prairie to Medicine Hat to Cranbrook to Saint John to Penticton to Camrose. Hooked on the sport since throwing his first rock in Teslin, Yukon (mile 804 of the Alaska Highway) Terry says the best part of curling is the fact that it’s strategic, competitive and social. It provides a place to meet people and socialize unlike any other. It’s no surprise that Terry’s favourite curling memory was breaking the attendance record at the 2005 Brier at Rexall Place – more than 281,000 event goers at the venue, there were lots of surly fans for Terry to social with! MEET KERSTEN MORRIS Kersten Morris is on the 2017 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship

team as the Sponsor Fulfillment & Office Coordinator. She’s the one who will

most likely be answering your call and answering any of your questions! Her goal is to help you in any way she can.

“I have the pleasure of working closely with our stellar sponsors, our chief Terry,

the creative Jenn and the amazing volunteer Committee Vice Chairs and Directors! This will be an amazing event and I am honoured to be part of the team,” says Kersten of her role with this international event.

Currently residing in Sherwood Park, it’s also the location of where she threw her first curling stone – at the Sherwood Park Curling Club in the mixed Friday night league with her husband. Today, the majority of Kersten’s curling skills are being honed at the office where she’s been practicing and will surly beat anyone at floor curling! Her favourite aspect of the sport is how it brings together family and friends

and she believes this upcoming event will bring energy and intense competition to the region.

Outside of the office, Kersten is happily married and proud mom to three amazing kids. If you think running the office is busy – picture Kersten at home with her twin boys (soon to be 8) and her baby girl who is just about to reach her second birthday. While Kersten loves her family time, she feels great about getting back to the office and using her skills and talents outside the home. After graduating from Leisure and Recreation Services Management, she’s proud of her background in sport and recreation. She spent several years at Special Olympics Alberta and prior to starting her family, she was a manager for Bissell Centre, helping to increase the quality of life for Edmonton’s inner city.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with dedicated volunteers, teams and committees and really look forward to working with all of you,” says Kersten. “Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with and hopefully you can help me out too as I learn the ropes. Teamwork makes the dream work!”

MEET JENNIFER SHEEHAN Curling has been a family affair for Jennifer Sheehan (nee Guzzwell). Her

grandfather introduced her to the sport in the family program at the St. John’s

Curling Club at about age 9 and from there her passion for the game and love of the sport has only increased. Jennifer has proudly represented her

home province of Newfoundland and Labrador four times at the national level,

including three times in Juniors where she skipped her team to a national final. In 2005, Jennifer won the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship with a team that included Olympic Gold Medalist, Mark Nichols, who Jennifer is routing will be a participant at the 2017 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship. Even with her vast curling experience, it’s no wonder one of Jennifer’s fondest curling memories was skipping against her sister at Provincials – a showdown of Guzzwell vs. Guzzwell. Jennifer loves the competition of curling and how social it is. Since moving across the country to Edmonton in 2007, Jennifer has played on the World Curling Tour and has met a number of friends that share her passion for the sport. “We’re all in it to win – we love the competition but at the end of the

day – the comradery keeps me coming back,” said Sheehan. “It’s funny because when you’re a kid growing up and you miss weekends with your friends because of curling... you’re not viewed as the cool kid but curling has become so popular now that the thing that used to make me a bit of a geek now makes me a bit different and sets me apart.” Her involvement with the FWMCCs comes as no surprise to those that know her as it combines two of her greatest passions – curling and communications. Jennifer has worked in the field of communications for 10 years including five fond years in the sports and entertainment sector at Northlands, which is the host venue. She’s excited to be back and part of what might be the last major sporting event at the storied venue.

“ I think Edmontonians are really buying into the fact this

is a major international event in our city,” added Sheehan. “The excitement of hosting this caliber of an event here is something I believe everyone is looking forward to. It’ll be the best of everything. Best curlers in the world AND an amazing party! What more could you want?”

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AUTUMN MIXER AT THE EDMONTON VALLEY ZOOSeptember 7, 2016

As guests entered the Edventure Lodge at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, they were greeted by volunteers Eileen and Janet. Their passion for the sport was undeniable. They were able to get the most buttoned up residents of Edmonton participating in floor curling. It wasn’t long before curling was the hot topic of the event! What better way to keep the interests of guests and continue the curling conversation than to quiz

corporate Edmonton on all things curling? Our friendly, eccentric and enthusiastic game show host ‘Patch’ tested

guests on how much they knew about our favourite sport. His trivia, and his

blazer, were a hit!

PARK AFTER DARK AT NORTHLANDS PARKSeptember 9, 2016

Have you ever curled next to a thoroughbred racetrack? Had you been at Park After Dark to cheer on the ponies, you could have! We set up street curling on the tarmac for guests to either practice their skills or throw their first rock of the season. We picked a great night to showcase the 2017 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship –

the University of Alberta was hosting MBA students at the track and many of the students were from India. Having

never seen curling before, they were eager to try their hand at the sport. By the end of the night, their interest

had grown and we may have gained some new curling fans!

Edmonton’s Shamrock Curling Club Celebrates 60 Years

Tucked into a park-like area bordering Mill Creek Ravine in central Edmonton lies the Shamrock Curling Club, one of the longest serving and most established curling clubs in Western Canada. This October, The Shamrock as it’s lovingly referred to, will celebrate 60-years of operations.

The motivation for opening the Shamrock was largely thanks to a dedicated group of curling enthusiast volunteers led by Ted Hart of Hart’s Drug Store. Initial cost estimates hovered at around $100,000 (an enormous cost for the 1950s), but the bourgeoning Shamrock membership of around 350 was willing to pony up $100 each in order to procure a down-payment to begin construction.

The Shamrock, much like the sport of curling itself, has experienced a resurgence in interest over the past few years. The Shamrock gears its programming toward attracting beginner, novice and recreational curlers. This emphasis upon growing the membership from the ground up has proven to be extremely successful. On any given evening the facility’s eight sheets are full of young (the average age for evening league curlers is around 30), enthusiastic curlers who are learning more and more about the numerous virtues that participation in curling can provide:

Since it opened in 1956, the Shamrock has hosted many high-end bonspiels, including the World Open and the Shamrock Shotgun. These events brought together top-level teams from all over the world and helped to put the Shamrock on the curling map.

Today, the Shamrock hosts numerous bonspiels and funspiels which emphasize the social and recreational parts of curling. If you’re looking to give the sport a try for the first time or want to get back onto the ice, visit Shamrockcurling.ca for information about upcoming events.

Events like the 2017 Ford Men’s World Curling Championship help to bring attention to the many virtues and excellences of curling, and it helps to further Edmonton’s reputation as one of the great curling centers in the world.

Note: Terry Morris, Event Manager, 2017 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship is a past board member and President of the Shamrock Curling Club.
