For 2014 we are delighted to introduce several exciting new ranges.

The Race Collection, the ultimate performance racing range has been re-designed to further improve efficiency while competing in warmer conditions, where weight, performance and protection can be key to success.

A customer favorite, the Coast Jacket has been re-vamped for the coming season and also the all new Coastal Racer Jacket is being introduced. An all-round coastal marine jacket with racing credentials well suited to competitive coastal sailing as much as general marine activities.

To continue our offering in performance racing kit we have upgraded the Regatta Master Watch and also introduced an entry level Race Watch for every member of the crew, not just the tactician.

Off the boat our Elements marine lifestyle range has a selection of stylish new Polo shirts and Rugby’s in both Men’s and Women’s styles.

Gill EthosWe search the world for the best fabrics to suit the required end use and then test them to destruction. If a fabric needs an additional coating to withstand the rigors of the Southern Ocean then we give it one. Our tests are carried out both in-house and with leading independent laboratories and not just as new, but also after artificial ageing and field-testing. We demand marine grade tests that simulate sitting in water as well as tests that flex and flog the fabric as if it has been used in a Force 8 gale rather than just walking on the golf course. This attention to detail ensures that Gill fabrics perform as well, if not better, than anything in the market today and ensures the quality of our products remain at the highest level.

THE FABRIC AND STITCHING TECHNOLOGY

Flatlock stitchedFlatlock stitching lies flat against the skin and prevents chafing. This method of constructionresults in a very durable finish.

Blind stitchedBlind stitched wetsuits are glued initially, then sewn with a curved needle, which doesn’t totally pierce the skin of the suit, and thus, the wetsuit remains watertight keeping you warmer and more comfortable in colder water.

TPMThermal Protection Material is a high density neoprene that protects the upper torso against the cooling effects of the wind and water. The denser face of the fabric is solid and will reflect wind and water. There are two different types of TPM on the suits. One is the C-mesh which is on the front and back chest - this is a thicker neoprene with a raised loop back - for comfort and warmth. This is strategically placed on the chest for maximum warmth and reduced wind-chill. On the shoulder areas we have added gravel skin TPM. This is a slighter thinner neoprene than the C-mesh and stretchier for the required movement. Gravel skin is also more durable than conventional Neoprene and so will withstand harness abrasion.

As a follow-up to our field test of padded

sailing shorts reported on in the March 2012 issue, Practical Sailor recently tried out a pair of Ca-met International’s Rio men’s sailing shorts, which did not arrive in time for the initial comparison. Made in the United States, the Rio padded shorts un-derwent the same test-ing as those we evalu-ated in the March issue, and testers compared the results to those of the Best Choice in that test, Gill’s performance padded shorts (model 1644). (Camet’s wom-en’s Wahine shorts got the pick for the ladies padded shorts in that test.)

The tests were designed to evaluate ruggedness and durability, comfort, ease of use (inserting foam pads), dry-ing time, odor resistance, color reten-tion, and any tendency for the fabric to shrink. Each pair also was evaluated on its features, including pockets, zippers, Velcro closures, fasteners, stitching, and the quality of material and construction. (For further details on the testing proto-col, see the March article online.)

Bench testing included an accelerated wear simulation: Donning test shorts, testers swayed their hips back and forth 50 times across 120-grit sandpaper af-fixed to a 2-by-4 length of lumber. Like other top brands of shorts we tested, the Camet Rio’s Cordura-reinforced abra-sion-resistant seat became fuzzy, but not worn through, after the abrasion test.

The shorts’ waist has belt loops, two adjustable Velcro tabs, and is fastened with a well-secured button, which field testing found to be more durable than a metal clasp—besides, a button can easily be replaced at sea.

The long Velcro strip running across the external rear of the shorts, which seals the single large pocket accom-modating the seat pads, withstood 25 openings with no noticeable wear. The

two Velcro tabs on each of the flapped cargo pockets at the front of the shorts also held up well. The right cargo pocket houses a smaller in-terior pocket, secured with Velcro, where a cell phone or other small device can be stored. The zipper func-tioned smoothly and is non-metallic, so rusting isn’t a factor.

The Rio shorts are made of soft, brushed, mid-weight Supplex, a patented nylon fabric designed for

fast drying. Like the Wahine shorts, the Rio pair dried quickly in the open air. After full immersion in a tub of salt water, the Rios were barely damp after 15 minutes hanging on a clothes-line in the breeze and were dry to the touch after a half-hour, earn-ing them an Excellent rating for dry time.

The Rio shorts also passed the odor-resistance test with flying colors, having no dis-cernible stink after being soaked then sealed in a black trash bag for 72 hours.

The shorts have no inner lining, but the crotch is gus-seted to support a full range of leg movement. All of the seams are double-stitched, so the construction should hold up well for many sailing seasons. The shorts, with a 1-inch-wide white stripe run-ning down both sides, are not only stylish but they are also quite comfortable, testers noted.

Care instructions call for the shorts to be washed in cold water and tumbled dry at low heat. In tests, repeated washing did not fade the dark blue color.

As a bonus, the shorts have a UV protection rating of UPF 40, which blocks 97.5

percent of the sun’s rays.Bottom line: Priced at $80, the Rio

shorts are one of the least expensive padded sailing shorts we’ve tested this year, and their test performance was on par with the top picks from the March report. The Camet Rio men’s padded shorts earn a PS Recommendation and Budget Buy pick.

Glare free vision

Polarized lenses block the glare produced by light reflecting off the water or bright deck surfaces. This reflected light creates a distracting haze which can be a real issue when you’re looking for marker buoys or checking sail trim. Polaroid’s polarizing lenses are made up of a number of functional elements ultra-carefully bonded together to achieve a high-performance optical product: The main element of the sandwich lens construction is the polarizing light filter in the centre. Laminated to both sides of the filter are UV light absorbers. Optically corrected, shatter-resistant cushion elements are laminated to both sides of the UV absorbers, followed by a unique scratch proof coating applied to the outer surfaces.

Natural colorsFilter category 3 lenses allowing 8-18% light transmission and are useful in bright sunlight, driving and general purpose wear.

100% UV400 UV light absorbers, which block 100% of harmful UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation.

Reduced eye fatigue

A quality optical lens is used to prevent vision distortion as cheaper lenses bend and misdirect light so that sizes, shapes and even distances can become distorted – leading to eye strain as you’re forced to compensate. Our ‘optically perfect’ lenses are the result of a unique manufacturing process that fine-tunes the lens for clearer, truer vision. As a result, they comply with European Class 1 Optics Standards.

Clear contrast

For everyday use in sunny conditions we’d recommend a Dark Smoke color as they block more bright light and don’t distort colors. The other lens color offered within the range is Copper which is great for everyday use but has the added benefit of filtering blue light and therefore enhancing reds and greens – useful for sighting buoys against water and bright blue skies.

FloatableDesigned for life on the water, all Gill sunglasses float. To achieve this, we select lightweight materials but also mold our frames to accommodate closed-cell flotation pods. Our Edge and Speed styles go one step further and contain sealed air-chambers within the frame itself.

Hydrophobic Hydrophobic outer coating sheds water and reduces salt residue for clear vision.

Oleophobic Oleophobic technology applied to the inside face repels fingerprints, sun lotion and skin oils. This is the same technology found on touch-screen devices to reduce finger marks.

Neoprene BootsRinse in fresh water

Rubber & Breathable Boots

CleanRemove salt and grit by washing under a tap or hose with fresh water. The outside of the boots can be cleaned with a warm non-detergent soap solution and rinsed thoroughly. Use a stiff brush to remove stubborn residue. You can also clean the inside of the boot with fresh water and a non-detergent soap. Wipe well to remove excess water inside and out.

DryGill Boots should be allowed to dry naturally away from a direct heat source. You can improve the drying time by placing screwed up newspaper inside the boots. For best results dry for at least 48 hours.

ProtectOnce fully dried, your Breathable boots can be treated with a Shoe Care Product such as Nik Wax or Grangers Conditioner for Leather. This will soften the leather and add a degree of water-repellency to the outside of the boot. To protect your rubber boots we recommend that they are stored out of direct sunlight.
