WELCOME TO THE 16th FOCUS ON TEACHING AND TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE!

Studentswhoareplacedinourfoundationmathcoursesusuallydemonstratealackofworkingknowledgeandskillsinavarietyofbasicmathematicalconcepts.Thereareaplethoraoffactorsthathavecontributedtothislackofknowledgeofskills.Additionally,studentsfacethesamekindsofproblemssuchasfearofmath,dislikeformathanddifficultyinunderstandingmathematical.Inourfoundationprogramwebelieveinstudent-centeredlearning.Therefore,theincorporationoftechnologyintoourlessonswasanaturalflowofunderstandingthenatureofourstudentsandrecognizingthetechnologicalworldinwhichtheyareliving.Theadditionoftechnologyintoourclassroomshavemadeourlessonsmoreengagingtostudentswhileimprovingtheirmotivationandindependentthinking.Whilethereisabroadrangeoftechnologyandtoolsthatassistinremediatingmathdeficiencies,wehaveshortlistedafewtechnologytoolsfromourexperiencethathaveproventobeeffectiveandproductive.Ourpresentationwilldiscussthesetechnologyaswellasthesuccesses,difficultiesandfailuresofusingthesetools.

Microscopy,importantinSTEMeducation,istypicallytaughtwithanalogmicroscopesthataredesignedforindividuals,butsharedbyseveralstudents.Thisimpedesopportunitiesforactivelearning(e.g.,collaboration,discussions,teachablemoments)asstudentsdisengagewhilepassivelywaitingtheirturn.MissouriS&T'sGeology&Geophysicsprogramisutilizingcutting-edgedigitalresearchmicroscopestotransformthepedagogyoftheclassroomenvironmentforallmicroscopyrelatedcourses.Digitalmicroscopesstreamlinesampleexamination,includingmineralidentification,quantitativesize,shape,andtexturalanalysis.Usinglivehighresolutionimages,studentssimultaneouslyperformsuchtaskstobuilddigitalreportswithimagerycapturedinreal-timeandsharedwithotherteams.Thisapproachdramaticallyincreasesstudentefficiency,allowingsignificantlymoretimetoengageinessentialSTEMskills-oralandwrittenpresentations,peer-peerinstruction,andviewingadditionalsamples.Furthermore,digitalmicroscopesprovideanovelplatformfordistantlearning-whichuntilnowhasnotbeenfeasibleformicroscope-focusedcoursework.

Astudent-choicemodelcourseredesignwasusedtocounteractalargeincreaseinstudentenrollment,improvethequalityofinstruction,andpreservestudentsuccess.Thismodelisaninstructionaltechniquethatallowsstudentstochoosehowtoengageinacourse.Usingthismodelinafirst-semestercollege-levelgeneralchemistrycourse,onlineoptionswerecreatedtoaugmentthetraditionalface-to-facecourse.Amandatoryrotationbetweenface-to-faceandonlineoptionsatthestartofthesemesterwasnecessarytoassiststudentsinmakinganinformedchoiceaboutwhatoptionsbestfittheirneeds.Pre-andpost-redesignstudentperformancedata(2008-2016)andpost-redesignstudentenrollmentdata(2012-2016)wereevaluated.Courseperformancewasmaintainedandoftenimprovedinpost-redesignyears,andwasgenerallyequivalentinthedifferentcoursecombinations.Initialhesitationtoenrollintheonlineoptionswasovercomeandreplacedbyanappreciationofdiverselearningopportunities.
