The cogwheel railway takes passengers from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe, is Europe’s highest-altitude railway station in a world of rock, ice and snow. Seven of the nine kilometres of railway are in a tunnel hewn in the rock of the Eiger and Mönch.

Europe’s highest-altitude railway station was opened on 1 August in 1912 (Swiss National Day). At 3,454 metres above sea level, the scenically spectacular Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe – became accessible to a wider public. The idea of building a railway up the Jungfrau Mountain came to Adolf Guyer-Zeller, an already renowned railway pioneer, while hiking in the Jungfrau Region in 1893. Captivated by the towering trio – Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau, he jotted down notes and sketches which corresponded very closely to the subsequent planning and construction of the Jungfrau Railway. Others before him had dreamed of building what became known as the “railway to the sky”.

day 2 interlaken – Bern– Gruyères – GenevaDepart Interlaken in the morning and drive along Lake Thun to the Swiss capital, Bern. The city is attractively set on a steep-sided curve of the River Aare and backed by the Alps. A city tour to the Old Town includes the Clock Tower, Kramgasse, and the 15th century Cathedral of St. Vincent. A drive south takes you to the scenic dairy farmlands, to Gruyères. A hilltop town, preserved against time, which could be the setting for fairytales with its medieval castle. An informative visit to a factory of milk products is a further highlight of your day. Continue your drive to the Vaud Riviera and reach Geneva, the most cosmopolitan city of Switzerland. Dinner on your own. Overnight at superior tourist-class hotel. (B)

Glacier Express Zermatt - St. Moritz

A 7½ hour railway journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass at 2’033 metres. The Glacier Express travels a picturesque route between the Graubünden holiday region, the sunny Valais region with its glacier landscape, and the regions of the South. Travel in comfort through the natural beauty of a landscape rich in ancient mountain forests, peaceful alpine meadows, rushing mountain streams and mountain valleys. It was on June 25, 1930 that the Glacier Express started summer operations from Zermatt to St.Moritz, but it was to take more than 50 years before the trains were able to also cross the impassable Furka alpine route in winter. Construction work on the Furka tunnel between Oberwald and Realp began in 1973 and services could finally start on 26 June 1982, allowing the Glacier Express to run year-round.
