Intel Optane© DC Persistent Memory and
SAP HANA
62
SAP HANA as an in-Memory database needs to read all data
into RAM on a restart of the system• Speed: HANA Databases tend to be large – so this simply takes
time.
• Risk: From an operating perspective, even if the HANA database is
clustered, there is a higher risk to the DC as only one system is
active, the other one is restarting
• What if: If the HANA Database can be made persistent in memory,
only a consistency check is required on reboot but the need and time
taken to load multiple Terrabytes of data from disk in memory is no
longer an issue.
PerformanceSAP HANA as an in-Memory Database
63
Reboot and restart SAP
HANA systems faster
Source: Blog by Andreas Schuster, Product Manager – SAP HANA Platform
Restart time:
• Large Databases gain the most
advantage at restart time
System Performance:
• Read times are similar to DRAM, write times
are ‘in the same performance envelope’
• HANA writes changes in batches
Size:
• Processors with an L suffix (eg 8280L): 4.5 TB
maximum per processor
• Processors with an M suffix (eg 8280M): 2 TB
maximum per processor
• All other processors: 1 TB per processor

64
Workload Memory Protection
65
Workload Memory Protection is a
new feature that replaces Page Cache
Management.
• Based on open source ‘cgroup’
• Provides a highly scalable solution
• Protects the memory where SAP
applications store data
• Protects against any kind
of memory pressure
• Offers lots of possibilities
for the future.

Containers are a key topic for
SAP. SAP is working on
containerizing solutions
• SAP DataHub
• Extensions of S/4 HANA
• SAP HANA (Public Cloud Service)
SAP is Starting to Deliver Solutions
Through Containers
76
SUSE provides various solutions
already today for clients to run
Container based workloads
• SUSE CaaS Platform is a product that
provides a platform based on
Kubernetes and Docker to run a
container at Enterprise Scale
• SLES for SAP Applications can also
host containers by installing the
respective extensions to the system –
to get started
Containers themselves also
require an OS – SUSE can help
here, too!
SUSE CaaS Platform architecture
SUSE and SAP work closely in the area of
containers to provide a holistic solution

Course Summary
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)
for SAP Applications is the leading
Linux platform for SAP HANA, SAP
NetWeaver, and SAP S/4HANA
solutions. The SUSE and SAP alliance
spans two decades of collaboration
and innovation. SUSE Linux
Enterprise Server was the first OS for
SAP HANA. If you’re running SAP,
chances are that you’re running SLES
as well. You need to know what you’re
doing.
Whether you are an SAP customer or
partner, knowing how the underlying
operating system works will make you
better at your job. Build up your
knowledge of this foundational
component for most SAP
implementations and put yourself on
the path to the SUSE certifications
SUSE Certified Administrator (SCA) and
SUSE Certified Engineer (SCE).
