Welcome to Summer Camp!

When the Valley quiets down and Phoenix heats up, the Brandeis National Committee (BNC)Phoenix Chapter's SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM begins. BNC provides you with exciting, and"cool" activities for you and your spouse or significant other, all for a $25 registration fee. It is awonderful opportunity to make new friends with whom to share fun experiences.

Now in its FIFTH year, BNC offers many of last year's popular activities which include: LunchtimeTheater at the Herberger, "Acting for Fun," bread-making and of course, dessert at the Sugar Bowl.Bowling is back with the fun and laughs that go with it.

We have many opportunities to learn while we have fun. There will be canasta lessons, genealogyresearch, note card making and apps workshops. There are two film groups, plus a specialBrandeis "Study with the Best" devoted to Alfred Hitchcock. For "foodies" we have restaurants,happy hours, wine bars and even a tearoom event.

There will be a docent-led tour of the Heard Museum to view the temporary Frida Kahlo and DiegoRivera exhibits, as well as a "Behind the Scenes Visit" to the Sheraton Grand to learn some of themany aspects of managing a large, successful hotel. Canasta and bridge games are available,along with book discussions, current events discussions and much more. This year for the FIRSTtime we will join with some of the Brandeis Alums in the Valley to enjoy the recent books in theBrandeis Encore series. These books are part of the Brandeis freshmen literary curriculum.

Not only will we have fun this summer, but also we will feel good by helping others in ourcommunity. There will be an opportunity to fill bags for the homeless and also to stuff and decorateteddy bears for the young patients at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

In addition, you and your friends may register for the Third Annual Summer Bridge Marathon,which runs through the summer, and a One Day Canasta Tournament on July 25. These eventsare separate from Summer Camp and require a separate fee (Details follow).

Before we know it the roads will be crowded again and the weather will be cool. We will meet inthe Fall having made new friends and having had wonderful experiences.

Dear BNC Colleagues,

The wonderful "Music in Bloom Luncheon" was a perfect finale to our

2016-2017 program year. Thanks to Sandy Itkowitz, our outgoing Programming

Vice President and her marvelous programming committee, we enjoyed a

myriad of diverse, exciting and successful events. Sandy, we all thank you.

Welcome to our newly installed VPs of Community Outreach: Wendy Cohen,

Ellen Kirschenbaum and Sharon Tievsky. We are pleased to have a new Programming Team of VPs : Michelle Fischler, Beth

Messer and Barbara Stern. This team has helped bring us the brilliant authors we enjoyed as well as the lovely venue at the

Book and Author Event. We also are pleased that Bruce Galin has agreed to be the Chapter Registrar and add her expertise

to the financial committee. We thank our new board members: Barbara Abrams, Caryn Balaban, Bonnie Furst, Judy Krockey,

Lois Segal, Ellen Widoff and Marti Zelikoff for joining the other members who have offered their time and energy to help make

the Phoenix Chapter the success that it is.

Now we embark on our exciting summer program which provides activities every weekday from June 1 - August 31. Thanks

to the creativity and tenacity of our Summer Camp Team: Caryn Balaban, Carol Isacson, Stephanie Klopper, Sheila Landau

and Melissa Rolloff, we will stay cool this summer blanketed in fun and camaraderie. Please see the cover page for details and

check the calendar beginning on page 4. The calendar and registration form are also available on our website at

http://www.brandeisphoenix.org.

In addition we will have the Third Annual Summer Bridge Marathon, run this year by Marlene Allen, Jane

Coleman and Gloria Sappol, as well as a Canasta Tournament on July 25th organized by Terriann Kleiner.

While you are away, the Study Group VPs Susie Sacks and Ronee Siegel will be diligently preparing the Study

Guide for the 2017 - 2018 year. There will be many new and exciting groups as well as many returning favorites.

We urge you to be a facilitator and start something new of your own. Contact Susie and Ronee now

(phxstudygroups@gmail.com) so you can be part of one of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of our

chapter. We thank Susie and Ronee for working so hard during the summer to make our year from October to

April/May so wonderful.

Whether you are taking advantage of Summer Camp, spending the summer in a cooler climate, taking trips

you've been planning all winter or just catching up with special projects, have a wonderful summer. We look

forward to seeing everyone in the fall for another full year of chapter activities.

Calling all facilitators---new and experienced! It's time to think outside thebox and expand our reach to evenings or the weekend for the 2017-2018Study Group Season.

As our membership continues to grow, we need to continue to be creative,accommodating and welcoming. Some folks still work and others have non-Brandeis commitments (thoseadorable grandkids!) that make daytime study groups impossible.

It's never too early to be thinking about new ways to explore our area, make new friends, and learn newthings. What about a study group that can be offered on the weekend or on a weekday evening? Maybeyou can team up with a friend or two to co-facilitate a study group. Maybe you have been hoping thatBrandeis would offer a study group for your particular passion---we'll be more than happy to help YOU getit off the ground.

Here are just a few ideas in need of facilitators: A Sunday Foreign Film group (for those who like to read

subtitles), a Men's film group that sees "Films My Wife Would Never See!" or a Sunday morning walking

group, a weekly poker group, more canasta and bridge playing groups (no teaching, just playing). Almostall of our groups are co-ed, so couples can join together. Facilitator training is provided.

Brandeis creative duo’s PBS documentary told story of War Paint

Carol Grossman '69 and Arnie Reisman'64 knew they had a story that needed tobe told: At a time when few women ranbusinesses, cosmetics pioneers HelenaRubinstein and Elizabeth Arden createdan industry, but their ambition wasmatched only by their rivalry. It was adrama worthy of Broadway, and soon,thanks to these two Brandeis alumni,that's exactly where it will be beginningnext month.Grossman and Reisman first connectedwhen they served together on Brandeis'Student Media Advisory Committee in theearly 1990s. A few years later, theycombined their talents to produce a videocommemorating the University's 50th

anniversary. As collaborators, they clickedimmediately."It's like we share a brain," saysGrossman, citing their common point ofview as a possible result of both beingBrandeisians of the '60s."We easily form a team where egos hidein the closet," adds Reisman. "We areboth willing to see another way to dosomething, and we can count on eachother."In the ensuing years, Grossman andReisman worked together on severalprojects, specializing in short films fornonprofit organizations.The genesis for their biggest endeavorcame about when Reisman and his wifevisited the New York Historical Society tosee a Jules Feiffer cartoon retrospective.The exhibit turned out to be in the rear ofthe museum, and on the way theyencoun te red ano the r d i sp lay ,"Enterprising Women: 250 years ofAmerican Business.""It chronicled just about every womanfrom Betsy Ross to Martha Stewart,"Reisman recalls. "My imagination wastouched, however, when I saw the postersfor Helena Rubinstein and ElizabethArden."Both arrived in the United States asimmigrants with little resources, but wenton to help build what is today a $150billion global health and beauty industry.Rubinstein and Arden were fierce rivals

for more than 50 years and never met inperson, although they lived and workedonly a few blocks apart."This, to me, sounded like a wonderfuldocumentary subject," says Reisman."A great business story, a greatwomen's story, a great Americancultural explosion and a drama!"Reisman brought the idea to Grossman,who was equally intrigued. Inconducting research, they discoveredthe book War Paint by LindyWoodhead, and reached an agreementwith the author to use her book assource material for a documentary,which they pitched to PBS. In 2009, ThePowder & the Glory premiered on thenetwork, where it has since become aWomen's History Month staple.The idea of a musical based on the filmcame from Grossman's then-teenagedaughter, Abby, who saw its stagepotential. Robert Brustein, founder ofthe Yale Repertory Theatre andHarvard's American Repertory Theatre,agreed."He told me, 'You've got dueling divas,Arnie!' " Reisman recalls.Grossman and Reisman connected withDavid Stone, one of the producers ofWicked who optioned the musical rightsand hired the creative team behindGrey Gardens, a musical that similarlywas based on a documentary.Broadway veterans and Tony Awardwinners Patti LuPone and ChristineEbersole were cast as the leads.War Paint opened in the summer of2016 at the Goodman Theatre in

Chicago, where it was met with criticalacclaim and a sold-out run, becoming themost successful production in thelegendary venue's history. Grossman andReisman were in attendance to see theshow inspired by their documentary cometo life on stage."At the end, I burst into tears," saysGrossman. "They did a great job."The show's success solidified its nextdestination: Broadway. War Paint beginspreviews at the Nederlander Theatre onMarch 7, with opening night on April 6.Grossman and Reisman will be inattendance.Looking back, both alumni credit theiralma mater with shaping their identitiesand career paths, fueling the inquisitiveminds that made projects like The Powder& the Glory possible."Brandeis in the '60s was an amazingincubator of courage and creativity," saysReisman. "I came there as a buddingindependent spirit, and Brandeis taughtme how to fly."Grossman remembers classes withProfessors David Keith Hardy and GordieFellman sparking her interest in film, anddocumentaries in particular. "At one pointProfessor Fellman showed Triumph of theWill followed by Night and Fog, and I wasso struck by the power of those films."Reisman, who now describes himself as"fairly retired," has been the poet laureateof Martha's Vineyard since 2014. He haspublished two books of poems and art,and continues to be a regular panelist onthe NPR comedy quiz show Says You!with his wife, Paula Lyons.Grossman manages a number of ongoingtasks related to The Powder & the Glory,including a variety of promotionalactivities such as administering its websiteand Facebook page. She also plays leadguitar in a folk/rock band. A Brooklineresident, Grossman enjoys returning toBrandeis every five years for her Reunion.The Powder & the Glory was likely thefinal film for the creative team. "We've hadthe careers we want to have," she says.
