Last Thursday, May 2, our Rosary Altar Society celebrated “May Crowning”. We began with the recitation of the Rosary, followed by a beautiful mass enhanced with the special cantoring by Teresa Falone, and the crowning of Mary by
Mickey Toye-Young. After the liturgy we assembled in the Tracy Center for refreshments hosted by the Rosary Society. We are always very grateful to our women of the Rosary Society for such celebrations of our Catholic traditions. We encourage all women of our parish to join our Rosary Society which meets on the first Tuesdays of every month at 7:00 PM. Our Rosarians offer many opportunities to get involved in our parish, and your support is always welcome and will be greatly appreciated.
Last Saturday, May 4, forty children received their First Holy Communion. Their parents have to be congratulated, too, for bringing their children to church, preparing them for this special day with Jesus, and dressing them up to the nines. We are grateful to teachers who helped them along this two-year journey to know Jesus, to our PREP ministry (Mrs. Marie Tonini and Ms. Teresa Rangel), to Nina Rangel and her assemble for the lively music, to Don McKenna for the photography, and to Helene Havers for the decorations. The weather held out, and we had a good attendance of family and friends at both Masses. I used the “Monstrance” as a show-and-tell, appealing to our young children to become who they receive, and display like the Monstrance Our Lord Jesus Christ in their lives. Please continue to pray for our children and their families. They are very precious to the Lord, very precious to all of us.
Last Sunday, at the 12:00 noon Mass we blessed our Youth. Some of them will be leaving us for College and we pray that they will
be safe, grow in wisdom and knowledge, and always know that they have a home in our parish. There were a few who received their “Driver’s License”. We offered them a special blessing with the prayer that they will drive with safety in their minds. We are most grateful to our Youth for being “peer leaders” to those young people preparing for Confirmation or going on the Appalachia Mission Team. And, finally a huge Thank You to Danielle Capuzzi for conducting our Youth band, for Claire Capuzzi who sang the “Ave Maria”, and for all in our Youth Band. It is always touching and encouraging to see our young people sharing their time and talents with us at Mass and in the Youth Ministry. Yes, and Thank You to Penny Manser for bringing this all together. God bless and reward you always.
This weekend (Saturday) our Annual Parish Carnival ends. This Carnival is our opportunity to welcome our neighborhood and extended communities to St. Virgil. While much seems to be given to entertainment, fun and games, many have expressed their appreciation for how our Carnival staff and volunteers reach out to make everyone feel welcome and wanted. Hospitality remains a hallmark of our parish. Thank you for being so understanding, selfless and generous.
There is more to happen: The Knights of Columbus will show us a proposal for a new placement of the Bell Tower; June 4 is the Parish Appreciation Day conducted by the Knights. We also plan to repair the roofs of our school buildings and do some clean-up and beautification of our landscape around the church. I shall keep you informed of these developments.
God bless us and keep us well, bless our school and college students as they prepare to move on, graduate and take on new jobs. - Fr. Lance
PARISH POSTINGS
Beginning Tuesday, May 28, Parish Office summer hours will be
9 AM – 2 PM
New Security System at the Parish Office/Rectory
In accordance with new guidelines from the Diocese of Paterson, we have recently installed a security system for the Rectory. When you come to the front door, simply ring the new video doorbell and you will be “buzzed in”. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
Calling all Prime Time members. Do you ever find yourself wondering when you try to remember things and can't recall, if you are maybe slipping into some
form of dementia? (And yes, there are many different forms of dementia.) Our program on Friday, May 17, will be presented by Mary Beth Kane of Arbor Terrace and her topic is: Dementia vs. Alzheimer's: How to Tell the Difference and What to Do. In addition, we will have our usual 50/50 raffle, our collection for the Interfaith Food Pantry and, of course, our delicious dessert table brought to us by Joan Sambrowski and her cadre of monthly bakers. Plan on joining us on May 17, at 1 p.m. in the Tracy Center. Questions? Please call Kathy Sisler (973-538-1379). Looking forward to seeing you all.
Fr. Lance’s Letter
Limited space is still available for Pilgrimage to The Divine Mercy Shrine in Stockbridge, Massachusetts on Friday, June 14
The grounds of the National Shrine consist of 375 acres of land nestled in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts. The name of the property is called “Eden Hill” because of its natural beauty. On the grounds of Eden Hill, you
can explore the National Shrine Church which offers daily Mass, confessions, adoration, rosary, benediction, the chaplet of Divine Mercy, the blessing of religious articles and a blessing with a first-class relic of St. Faustina. There are five outdoor shrines including life-size Stations of the Cross. Their gift shop is the largest religious articles store in New England.
Plan to join our Parish Pilgrimage on June 14. Bus transportation and a box lunch will be provided for $45. Bus leaves at 9 AM and returns approximately 8 PM. If you are planning to join us, fill out the form below and return it to the Parish Office with your cash or check made payable to St. Virgil’s Church.

Faith Formation
St. Virgil PREP would like to offer a "Joyous Congratulations!!" to our children who received First Holy Communion last Saturday, May 4, during two beautiful masses. We thank Father Lance for the blessings and wisdom he shared with the children and their families. His love for God and our parish is visible in his dedication to the children of our parish. We are grateful to our altar servers, Anthony Tonini and Michael Szoke who gave up some of their time on a Saturday to help, as well as our Eucharistic Ministers Jane Flynn, Maria Aloia, Andrew DeBlock, and Angela Rangel. Thank you to our musicians for providing the uplifting music, especially our guest guitarist and violinst, Paris and Virginia, along with Nina. An extra special thank you to Don McKenna who faithfully gives of his time and talent each year to take photographs and capture the special occasion for our families. We want to thank our parish secretary, Gloria Carvagno, who always works behind the scenes to support us. We cannot forget the time and dedication given by our catechists Jessica Battagliese, Jean Foldy, Michelle Fox, and Rebecca VanRy who helped the children prepare all year by sharing their faith and teaching the children about the great love and gift of Jesus! Our hearts are full of gratitude! Thank you!!

Coins for Babies
In the five years since Fr. Lance started the Coins for Babies project, St. Virgil parishioners have donated over $11,000 to support the continued needs of expectant and new mothers. We will collect again this year. Money collected is used to purchase much-needed items for Birthright in Dover: diapers, diaper bags, baby wash, baby wipes, diaper cream, petroleum jelly, crib sheets, towels and face cloths. Items are supplied year-round on an as-needed basis.
Starting on Mother's Day weekend, May 11/12, baby bottles will be available at the church entrances. Please fill with your donation and return to St. Virgil's on Father's Day weekend, June 15/16, or to the parish office. Birthright relies solely on contributions from neighboring parishes and individuals. It has no corporate sponsorships or fund-raising campaigns. This is a great opportunity to teach young children the power of giving, even small coins.
Please keep these mothers and their babies in your prayers.

WEEKLY REFLECTION
Fourth Sunday of Easter Acts 13:14,43-52 New Testament John 17:27-30
One of the biggest challenges to the original members of the “way,” which became known as the Christian faith, was who else could be admitted as members of this new faith. Many of the apostles of Christ who formed the new faith were Jewish and for some time afterwards, continued to attend the Jewish prayer services. Disagreement arose from the Jewish members whether the new Christians who were not of Jewish origin, could attend the synagogue services. Eventually the question arose among those of the Jewish faith who converted was whether or not the Gentiles, who did not believe a faith, could become Christians, without becoming Jewish first. To find the answer to this question whether the Gentiles could become members, they turned to statements that Christ had made while He was with them, which affirmed that the Gentiles could become members directly: “I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation.”
John’s Gospel proceeds to confirm the answer as to whom could be let into the church from Christ’s own words: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish… No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all ...The Father and I are one.”
Lord, keep us in our Father’s hand, and give us eternal life!
