WELCOME TO ST PETER’S CHURCH, PARKSTONE

A warm welcome to our parish eucharist, which lies at the heart of our Christian worship. Here we shall be fed and nourished, challenged and encouraged. On this festival of All Saints, we remind ourselves that no Christian is solitary. Through baptism we become members of one another in Christ, and members of a company of saints whose mutual belonging transcends all that would separate us, including death. It is fitting then that we celebrate this festival with our ‘moving liturgy’ today. It has been some 18 months since we were last able to celebrate in this way. Today, we begin our worship at the font and remind ourselves of our baptism. Our liturgy is a weaving made up of the word of God, prayer, silence and song; and within this we recall the life and death of Jesus Christ in the celebration of the eucharist. Our service concludes with the dismissal that encourages us to ‘follow God’s saints in ways of holiness and truth’. May the journey of our lives bear these same hallmarks as we are inspired by the example of the saints. We are invited to support the work of St Peter’s, to help us carry out our mission and ministry to our local community. A collection will not be taken during the service, but there is provision for us to make our offering as we leave St Peter’s Church. It is also possible to make an offering by clicking the ‘donate’ button on our website: www.stpetersparkstone.org.uk. Every donation is greatly appreciated, thank you.

THE GATHERING

Our service today is a ‘Moving Liturgy’. We prepare for the celebration at the font where we confess our sins just as we did when we were baptised and first became Christians, proclaiming our faith in God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. During the first hymn there will be a procession. As the procession moves towards the back of the church, please turn to face the font.

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favour To our fathers in distress; Praise him still the same for ever, Slow to chide, and swift to bless, Praise him! Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like, he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes. Praise him! Praise him! Widely as his mercy flows. Angels, help us to adore him; Ye behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him; Dwellers all in time and space. Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace.

The Greeting

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus

Christ be with you All And also with you

Rejoice, people of God, praise the Lord! Let us keep the feast in honour of all God’s saints, in whose victory the angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God.

All Amen! Thanks be to God

The President welcomes everyone and then we confess our sins

Christ calls us to share the heavenly banquet of his love with all the saints in earth and heaven. Knowing our unworthiness and sin, let us ask from him both mercy and forgiveness.

Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison Sing Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison. Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison

Lord you are gracious and compassionate Sing Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison. Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison

You are loving to all and your mercy is over all your creation Sing Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison. Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison

Your faithful servants bless your name and speak of the glory of your Kingdom.

Sing Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison. Kyrie, Kyrie, Eleison

May God our Father forgive you your sins and bring you to the fellowship of his table with his saints for ever.

All Amen As the procession moves to the front of the Nave, the president asperges (sprinkles) the people with water from the font as a sign of God’s forgiveness and healing. You may like to make the sign of the cross as the water touches you as a way of remembering your Baptism.

Gloria

Sing Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The President introduces a period of silent prayer and then sings the Collect for All Saints’ Day.

Let us pray that we may be strengthened by our communion with all the saints. Silence is kept. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Sing Amen. Please sit for our readings.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

A reading from Isaiah 25: 6-9

6 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. 7 And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; 8 he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 9 It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

For the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. A reading from the Book of Revelation 21: 1-6a

I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’

7

5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ 6Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

For the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. The gradual hymn.

Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God, the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ's abode. The Lord, who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, to dwell in lowliness with men, their pattern and their King; Still to the lowly soul He doth himself impart, and for his dwelling and his throne chooseth the pure in heart. Lord, we thy presence seek; may our this blessing be; give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for thee.

The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Sing Glory to you, O Lord.

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’ But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’ Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.’ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’ (John 11:32-44)

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Sing Praise to you, O Christ. Please sit as we reflect on God’s Word. Sermon – the Revd Sally Bedborough, Associate Priest Please stand as we declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Creed All We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

10

Please sit for our prayers. Prayers of Intercession

Lord, in your mercy All Hear our prayer.

United in the company of the faithful and looking for the coming of the kingdom, let us offer our prayers to God, the source of all life and holiness.

The Intercessions end as follows We give you thanks for the whole company of your saints in glory, with whom in fellowship we join our prayers and praises; by your grace may we, like them, be made perfect in your love.

All Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honour and power, be to our God for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT

Please stand as the president introduces the peace. The Peace

We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you

All and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Bread and wine are placed on the altar as we sing our offertory hymn.

How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds In a believer’s ear! It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear.

11

It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast; ’Tis manna to the hungry soul, And to the weary rest.

Dear Name! the rock on which I build, My shield and hiding-place, My never-failing treasury filled With boundless stores of grace. Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, My Prophet, Priest, and King; My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, Accept the praise I bring. Weak is the effort of our heart, And cold my warmest thought; But when I see thee as thou art, I’ll praise thee as I ought. Till then I would thy love proclaim With every fleeting breath; And may the music of thy name Refresh my soul in death.

The president offers prayer for the preparation of the altar. Taking of the Bread and Wine

As the grain once scattered in the fields and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside are now reunited on this table in bread and wine, so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together from the corners of the earth into your kingdom.

All Amen. The Eucharistic Prayer (B)

The Lord be with you. Sing And also with you.

12

Lift up your hearts. Sing We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Sing It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks, most gracious God, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and glorified in the assembly of your saints. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. We, your holy Church, acclaim you. In communion with angels and archangels, and with all who served you on earth and worship you now in heaven, we raise our voice to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing:

Sing Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

13

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith:

Sing Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Peter, St Osmund, and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

All Amen. The consecrated bread and wine are raised in the sight of the people, and the Sanctus bell is rung as we honour Christ’s presence among us. After a moment’s silence, please sit for The Lord’s Prayer.

14

The Lord’s Prayer

With Saints and Martyrs through the ages, let us pray with confidence, as our Saviour taught us

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The president breaks the consecrated bread. Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Sing Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. The president invites the people to receive communion.

15

Giving of Communion I heard the voice of a great multitude crying, ‘Alleluia.’ The Lord our God has entered into his kingdom.

All Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Words The body and blood of Christ keep you in eternal life. All are welcome to come forward to receive communion or a blessing. Holy Communion will be offered in both kinds by simultaneous administration (intinction). Please receive with both hands open. If you would like to receive a blessing please bring this service booklet with you. Please continue to respect the distance of at least one metre from others as you come forward, and sanitise your hands before receiving. Please join in singing the Communion hymn if you wish to do so.

Who are these like stars appearing, these before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? Alleluya, hark! they sing, praising loud their heavenly King. Who are these of dazzling brightness, these in God's own truth arrayed, clad in robes of purest whiteness, robes whose lustre ne'er shall fade, ne'er be touched by time's rude hand - whence come all this glorious band? These are they who have contended for their Saviour's honour long, wrestling on till life was ended, following not the sinful throng; these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained.

16

These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more. These like priests have watched and waited, offering up to Christ their will, soul and body consecrated, day and night to serve him still: now, in God's most holy place blest they stand before his face.

Prayers after Communion

Lord of heaven, in this Eucharist you have brought us near to an innumerable company of angels and to the spirits of the saints made perfect: as in this food of our earthly pilgrimage we have shared their fellowship, so may we come to share their joy in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen All Generous God,

you have fed us at your heavenly table. Set us on fire with your Spirit that when Christ comes again we may shine like lights before his face, who with you and the Spirit lives for ever

Amen

Announcements are made.

SENDING

Final hymn.

For all the saints who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be for ever blest. Alleluia, alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia, alleluia!

O blest communion! fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, alleluia!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array: the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, alleluia! From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia!

Please stand as we are sent out with God’s blessing. The Blessing

May God, who kindled the fire of his love in the hearts of the saints, pour upon you the riches of his grace.

All Amen. May he give you joy in their fellowship and a share in their praises.

All Amen.

18

May he strengthen you to follow them in the way of holiness and to come to the full radiance of glory.

All Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

Following God’s saints in the ways of holiness and truth, go in the peace of Christ.

All Thanks be to God. The ministers and people depart.
