INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY Acts 1:1-11 * Ephesians 1:17-23 * Luke 24:44-53

Jesus has prepared the way, and gives us the Holy Spirit to help us along. Occurring between the two other major feasts of Easter and

Pentecost, the Ascension can be overlooked or lost. Perhaps today is a good day to reflect on what Jesus’ return to the Father means to us: that he has fully prepared our way to the Father, and that we are never alone. The Holy Spirit is within us and around us as our Advocate. In the first reading, Luke recounts the many times that Jesus presented himself alive to his Apostles, his promise of the Holy Spirit to come, and Jesus’ being lifted up, [where] a cloud took him from their sight. In the second reading, Paul prays that the Ephesians may have wisdom and knowledge of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that they are witnesses to the things that had been written and fulfilled. Then he blesses them and is taken up to heaven.

PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATES ◆ After Gospel Reading

Catechist: (Steve Oscar)

Your Grace Archbishop Richard Smith,

Parish of St. Matthew in Rocky Mountain House is honored by the presence of a successor of

the Apostles.

I present to you, our sons and daughters, candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Under

guidance of their parents, guardians and catechists and with the prayerful support and

encouragement of this parish community they have prepared for this Sacrament of Christian

Initiation which was begun at their baptism.

I ask that you impose hands upon them and anoint them with the Sacred Chrism, sealing them

with the gift of the Holy Spirit. We pray that their participation in the Holy Eucharist with all

of us assembled here will strengthen them as faithful witnesses to Christ. I invite the

candidates for Confirmation to please stand as your name will be called.

The candidates for Confirmation are called by name

When the name of the candidate is called, the candidate will stand

All candidates will remain standing until all the names of the candidates are called

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES ◆ After Archbishop’s homily

After the homily, ONLY THE CANDIDATES TO BE CONFIRMED STAND and renew their Baptismal Promises in

a voice to be heard by all. The Archbishop leads the renewal with the following form:

Archbishop: Do you renounce Satan, and all his works and empty promises? Candidates: I do.

Archbishop: Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? Candidates: I do.

Archbishop: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose again from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the Father?

Candidates: I do.

Archbishop: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who today through the Sacrament of Confirmation is given to you in a special way just as he was given to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost?

Candidates: I do.

Archbishop: Do you believe in the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?

Candidates: I do.

Archbishop: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

7 GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Wisdom:

This gift makes us friends with God. Wisdom helps me to understand things from God's point of view. Wisdom gives our souls power to experience divine things. How will Wisdom help me? Wisdom will draw me into a closer relationship with God. I will start to see things from God's point of view. I will experience God as infinite goodness.

Understanding:

Understanding reveals hidden things. It helps me to begin to understand the deep meaning of supernatural truths such as Mass, Eucharist, and Sacraments. Understanding purifies my soul and I begin to see myself as God sees me. How will Understanding help me? Understanding will help me to draw closer to God because I will begin to truly believe in God's love for me. I will begin to understand difficult things like the Mass, Jesus' real presence in the Eucharist, and the Sacraments.

Knowledge:

This gift will give me knowledge of holy things and creation. I will begin to see what is of God and what is not. I will begin to fall in love with everything that God has made. How will Knowledge help me? Knowledge will help me to appreciate the life that God has given me. I will begin to see God's presence in people, things, and in nature and I will treat them with proper dignity.

Counsel:

The Holy Spirit will direct, guide, and counsel us on the right thing to do in every circumstance. How will Counsel help me? When I do not know what to do, I can ask for this gift of Counsel so I can make the decision God would want me to make. It will help me to know WWJD.

Piety:

This gift will make my relationship with God become stronger. As I begin to trust God more, my confidence in Him will grow. I will begin to understand that other Christians are truly my brothers and sisters - we are in the same family of God and I will treat them with respect and dignity. How will Piety help me? Piety will help me to trust God more. It will help me have a better friendship with Him. Piety will help me to see other people as my brothers and sisters in God's family. This will help me to be willing to sacrifice for others and to pray for them.

Fortitude:

This gift brings the tremendous strength and courage of the Holy Spirit Himself so that I will be able to do what God is asking me to do. How will Fortitude help me? When I hit obstacles in life, fortitude can give me tremendous "Holy Spirit strength," which is so far beyond human strength. Fortitude will help me to stand up for what I believe in and not cave in to peer-pressure.

Fear of the Lord:

This gift is a deep fear and hatred of sin because we love God so much that we never want to do anything to hurt or displease Him. Fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God; it is a fear of sin. How will Fear of the Lord help me? When I'm in a tough position at school or at home, if my desire to please God is the strongest influence in my life, then I will choose the kind and loving way. This gift will help me to stay on the pathway to heaven.

PARISH BULLETIN * June 02, 2019 – Ascension of the Lord (Year C)

Page 7

Today’s celebration of the Ascension of the Lord can get lost. It comes between two other significant moments in

the life a young Church. A few weeks ago, we celebrated the greatest day on the liturgical calendar, the Resurrection

of the Lord. In a few days, we will celebrate another important event for a fledgling Church, the Descent of the Holy

Spirit. Today, the Apostles are less afraid than they were when Jesus came to them on that first Easter, but losing

him today for a second time could not have been easy. In our first reading, they are left staring up at heaven. In the

Gospel, they leave rejoicing filled with great joy. So which is it? Are they bewildered or joy-filled? Actually they are

both. The Apostles have journeyed with Jesus for three years. They have witnessed the miracles and the parables.

They have also witnessed the resentments and the ridicule. They have just witnessed his torturous death and his

glorious Resurrection. It has truly been a rollercoaster ride of giant proportions.

BOOKLETS - “OUR DAILY BREAD” These booklets are free.

“Our Daily Bread” booklets for June, July and August are available at the back of each church.

CHALICE TANZANIA MISSION (OCTOBER 2 - 22, 2019)

We are happy to share with you details for Chalice’s Mission to Tanzania this coming October! As you may know from past Chalice newsletters and updates, we have been talking about this particular mission over the past year (plus); a couple months ago we even had to change the destination country from Kenya to Tanzania (for potential risk/safety reasons). I am especially grateful that our timeline and budget have been set. Our mission dates are October 2-22, 2019 and we will be visiting our Mbinga and Neema Sponsor Sites in the communities of Morogoro, Mkongo and Mjimwema. (We will also visit Ruaha National Park for safari at the close of our mission!). Our partners, the Vincentian Fathers from India and the Sisters of Visitation Congregation of Alleppey of India, have been engaged in these communities with Chalice since 1998 and 2008, respectively. Together, we are currently impacting the lives of 1,870 children and 27 elders through Chalice’s Family Funding model, accompanied by Capital Projects and Human Development Programs. Our goal is: educated children in healthy families and self-sustaining communities. Come and see it all firsthand! ● We are primarily recruiting volunteers who have a heart for service (you do not need to have a specific skill set to apply). We are looking to form a team with experience in some of the following areas: agriculture, irrigation, tree planting and/or gardening; nutrition (all ages, including breast feeding); health & hygiene (including Days for Girls reusable menstrual kits, self-defence); care for elders (including knowledge of dementia); finance and savings; small business; social work and/or counselling (in particular: families, caregiver stress); home based caregiving; education (all levels); empowerment of women and communities; handicrafts; carpentry; painting; photography.

Application are due June 24, 2019. Please email to express interest and to request the full details and application. Contact Joanne (1-800-776-6855, [email protected]) if you have any questions. If you know someone who may be interested in our mission, please share these details with them. Thank you for your interest in serving with Chalice, and for spreading the word!
